I've set a pack aside for you both.

Are these still available? Looks like you've gone well beyond your 24 packs. My two boys helped me start a butterfly garden a couple of years ago, and honestly I've seen more bees than butterflies. Not that I'm complaining--they are so fascinating to watch! Our poor little butterfly garden has never really taken off, so I'm looking for a few different plants to try there. It is shadier than I thought it would be--only gets full sun in the afternoon. Would those plants work there? I plan to work lots of compost and manure into it this spring, as Critterologist gave me some seeds for my butterfly garden, and I really, really want them to succeed!

I'm even wondering if I should dig up the few perennials that have lived (some purple sage, salvia, and blanket flower, and one lonely succulent whose name escapes me) so I can get it tilled and work the compost in deeper. There were a few iris there when we bought the house, so I just hacked at the soil with a shovel and garden fork, and wonder if it needs broken up and amended better. Pretty hard and dry, for the most part.

Kawonkamish Bookerc1,

The Calendula, Echinacea, Liatris and Rudbeckia will do okay in light/partial shade. The others are a toss-up. They might do well and they might not. The Chrysanthemum, Coreopsis lanceolata do okay in dapple shade in my gardens. The Coreopsis tinctoria tends to grow a bit leggy in the shade as does the Silene.

You could do that, it would help alot with moisture retention and will help loosen up the soil. I've set a pack of B&B aside for you.

I searched online and found plants that would do well in a Shade Butterfly Garden. Here are a few.

Goatsbeard (Aruncus aethusifolius, A. dioicus)

Ginger (Asarum arifloium, H. canadenses, H. caudatum, A. europaeum, A. splendens)

Aster (Aster azureus, A. divaricatus, A. ericoides, A. oblongifolius, A. prenanthoides, A. puniceus, A. umbellatus)

Wow, thanks! I had no idea some of those were butterfly/bee attracting plants! I have some foxglove started (no seedlings yet, though) that I'd planned to put elsewhere, but maybe I'll have to put them in the butterfly garden, as well. I do have some heuchera, echinacea, and bleeding hearts elsewhere in my yard. I'll have to do some research on how to propogate them (I know I can save seeds from the echinacea, at least, assuming I beat the birds to them!).

I'm so new to all of this. . .I just keep buying what appeals to me, and figuring out what will and won't work as I go!

Blessings!
Booker

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish Booker,

Here are some propagation info on the Dicentra, Echinacea and Heuchera. I hope this helps you out.

Dicentra: Grow in hummus-rich soil in sun to shade. Very Early Spring: Divide brittle fleshy roots. Spring: take root cuttings or sow seeds.

Echinacea: Grow in well-drained, sandy soil in full sun(for best results) or partial shade. Spray to control Japanese Beetles. Early Spring: divide plants. Spring. sow seeds.

Heuchera: Plant in Spring in sun or partial shade. Plant in well-drained soil with ample hummus. Set crowns 1 inch below surface. Remove any damaged leaves in the Spring. After flowering remove spent blooms to encourage further flowering. In hardiness zones 3-6, add a light mulch to prevent plant heaving in early Spring. Spring: divide crowns, sow seeds; Summer: root leaf cuttings, with a small piece of leaf stalk attached.

Happy Easter!

I'm a chicken. I've never tried to do cuttings, and the only thing I've ever divided is a bunch of day lilies that had reproduced until they were a solid mass at my Mom's house. She wanted them GONE, and I couldn't stand to see them go to waste! LOL

There is always something new to learn, and I can't think of a better place to look for answers. Seems for every question I ask, I get an answer that sparks 5 more questions!

Hi, maccionoadha,

What a great idea to give aways the pollinator garden seeds!

Now, everyone will have to 'buz' on over to the Butterfly and Hummingbird Forum and show us pictures of your seed starting projects.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bbb/all/

And your blooms this spring.

And please be sure to show us photos of your butterflies and bees this summer! (-:

A chance you have any seeds left? A while back I got on Burt's Bees website, but the seed packets were all gone by the time I checked.

And thanks for the info you posted on plant suggestions for a shade butterly garden. One of my flower beds is partially shaded by a large black walnut tree. Years and years of nuts composting (no one before us had planted ANYTHING at our house) had created a fabulous medium where everything grows, I start out a lot of my stuff in that bed.

DH and I are concerned about the declining bee population also. I think a lot of people don't quite understand the ramifications associated here. I hope they will be able to find out what's causing it and stop it soon. I work at providing a welcoming garden environment, no pesticides or anything that would harm our little visitors!

Thank You!!

Kawonkamish Moe,

If you have any seeds left I would love some too! Let me know so I can send the SASBE.

Thank you,

Carol

Kawonkamish,

PosiePoker and yardqueen1948 I've set a pack aside for each of you.

Well, that's it. I'm all out of Bee & Butterfly seed mix. It was fun. I may do this again in the future. I've met alot of nice people from doing this. I'll keep this open until all SASBE's have been sent.

Good luck to all. I hope your B&B garden grows well and have lots of bees and butterflies come into your gardens. I can hardly wait to see how they turn out. Until then...

Kawonkamish,

Well today I saw my first Bumblebee of the season, but still no Honeybees. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I usually see them by now, buzzing about the crocus. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I'd love some seeds if you have any left. Thanks,

I've seen two bumblebees (or perhaps the same bee on two days), but no honeybees yet. I'll keep watching and praying!

I've set a pack aside for you; babsadventure decided she didn't want hers and requested I pass her pack along to another DG'er. I'll Dmail you my address.

We just raised Painted Lady butterflies in my classroom, and released them yesterday. I'd never actually gotten to watch a butterfly hatch before, other than on movies. ;o) Surprising how fast they can fly!

Booker

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish,

I still have a few packs left, if anyone is interested.

Bookerc1: Isn't it a sight watching them hatch. I love Painted Lady's. Their caterpillars love flowers from the Boraginaceae and Compositae Families.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

can i still get in?

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Moe, I just saw my first recognizable seedling from the seeds you sent, a lupine. The rest are probably hiding behind my prolific poppies, and will be more visible soon. I can't wait to see the mix!

Sad to say, I haven't seen any honeybees at all in my flowers this spring. Usually the clover and my plants are buzzing with them by now, but all I've seen is a couple of bumblebees. I wish there was more I could do to help!

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Only one bumble bee here so far, I wonder if it is the late spring and all the rain. My daughter has an empty lot of about 1/3 acre next to her house in a new subdivision. Now that the housing market is in the toilet, her husband doesn't think it will ever sell (it is oddly shaped), so he went out and planted a huge bag of seeds that are good for bees. I sure hope they come up, it would be much prettier than it is now.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish,

shokami2: I've added you to the list. I've sent you a Dmail.

Kawonkamish Netopog(Greetings My Friends),

Well, it's sad when a good thing comes to a close. I've given out my last pack of seeds. I enjoyed meeting all of you and hope that your gardens overflow with flowers, bees and butterflies. With your help, I think we've won a small skirmish in the battle against the Bee Colony Collapse Disorder. http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentView?contentPageId=531&catalogId=10051&storeId=10001&langId=-1
