CLOSED: Offering Bee & Butterfly Mix for SASBE

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish(Greetings),

I have 24 packs of Bee & Butterfly Mix seeds for SASBE. Though they were only going to the ones, who did not get a chance to request them from Burt's Bees. I've decided that everyone, should have the chance to help, the dwindling bee population. So, I made a mix similar to that of Burt's, but added a few extras. Burt's pack states it weighs 300mg. I checked it with a measuring spoon and it came to less than 1/4 teaspoon. I made my packs approx. 1/2 teaspoon. Here's a comparison of what the two contain:

My mix:
Bee & Butterfly Mix(contains the following): Pot Marigold(Calendula officinalis), Shasta Daisy(Chrysanthemum maximum), Tickseed(Coreopsis lanceolata), Calliopsis(Coreopsis tinctoria), Purple Coneflower(Echinacea purpurea), Dense Blazing Star(Liatris spicata), Gloriosa Daisy(Rudbeckia hirta), Catchfly(Silene armeria)

Burt's Bees:
Bee Mix(contains the following): Pot Marigold(Calendula officinalis), Shasta Daisy(Chrysanthemum maximum), Tickseed(Coreopsis lanceolata), Calliopsis(Coreopsis tinctoria), Purple Coneflower(Echinacea purpurea), Catchfly(Silene armeria)

They'll go to the first 24 responders. Please post your request here, so that I'll be able to tell who requested first. I'll list below with updates. Thank you. I'll add more packs, if needed or until I run out of seed. I'll Dmail the growing information, when I mail back your SASBE. A strike through a name with a date, means the SASBE has been mailed out to the person.

Updates: The 12 people posted their requests for seed, in another thread and mommymaureen, epb, goofbulb & bsgardens sent their request by Dmail. They're newbies/nonsubscribers, so weren't able to post their requests here. This seems to be going well, so I've added 11 more packs.

I'd love your mix! I live in college dorms, and we have a community garden that is.. well... almost nonexistent.

Maybe the bees would enjoy a visit to my campus?

RatherB

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Kawonkamish RatherB.,

I'm from Massachusetts and am a member of the Chappiquiddic Band, Wampanoag Nation. I've lived in the same house all my life. It's a quarter acre lot, that is mostly gardens with a small house in between... lol. I've been gardening most of my life. I remember my father working in the vegetable garden and giving me raw vegetables to eat. He would take a few of this and that and walk with me over to the outside faucet and rinse them off and hand them to me. I think my favorite thing was the baby onions. He'd thin them and give me the thinnings. I loved to eat them, but my mother wasn't to thrilled when I'd give her a kiss after eating them... lol. My mom would be in her flower gardens and I'd be beside her catching worms, rescuing them from her shovel. I would also save the frogs and toads from the lawn mower.

When it comes to the bees, I guess it's because, I remember growing up and seeing our gardens full of honey & bumble bees. Lately though, they've been few and far between. I think the most I saw in one day, last summer, was six bees. I remember, when I was little, rescuing them from the swimming pool. I'd scoop them out with my hand and blow on them till they revived. They never stung me, which is a good thing, since I'm allergic to bee and wasp venom... lol.

We didn't get as many blooms to go to seed, last year. It's scary to think, since my neighborhood is surrounded by cranberry bogs. The cranberry owners are worried about the bee loss as well. So when I saw in the forum, that Burt's Bees was offering free seed to help the bees out. I jumped at the chance to get some. Then as I read, after getting my request filled, that they had no more seed to offer and there were still people looking for seed, I saw the need and decided to help out. I purchased some seeds and with seeds from my own plants, I made up these packets. When I measured out the seed from Burt's and saw that it was only 1/4 teaspoon, I thought I should double the amount.

I'm glad it's been a success and that there will be lots of flowers for the bees. I hope that they can find the cause for the bee loss and reverse the decline.

Aquene,
Moe/WautukquesSochepo

Moe

I received my seeds yesterday and can't thank you enough! I have plotted out my butterfly and bee garden and can't wait to get started on it this weekend. The bonus seeds were an unexpected surprise! I have added them to my journal and looked them up last night - so exciting! Let the gardening begin! LOL

I loved reading the info on your childhood and home. I can picture you reviving the bees :) What a wonderful spirit you have! I am so blessed to have "met" you.

Again, thank you for your kind generosity.

Em.

Kawonkamish Em,

I've met so many wonderful and kind people, since joining Dave's. It's nice to know that there are such nice people here, wanting to help wildlife survive.

It was quite a sight to see... a six year-old hunched over her hand, blowing on a bee. Once they had revived, I would set them on a leaf to rest. My Mother almost went into hysterics the first time I did it though. I had gotten stung only three times in my life and then only because I had accidentally stepped on the poor dears. My Father had to race me to the hospital. They couldn't stand the fact, I hated shoes and would walk around barefoot all the time... lol.

I discovered last year these tiny bees in my window boxes last year. I looked them up and discovered they were Yellow-faced Bees(Hylaeus spp). They are so tiny, about 1/4 of an inch long. One landed on my fingertip and just sat there looking at me. It was so cute. I must have decided I wasn't a threat and it buzzed off to it's burrow. I could walk right up to the window boxes, even water them and they didn't care. They'd just fly up above the boxes and swarm about, when I was done watering they would fly back to their burrows.

Thanks for your reply, Moe. I appreciated that you would share a little about yourself to better understand your passion for what you are doing. Your kind spirit to the nature around you is to be treasured. We thank you for the chance to help you by assisting to revive the bee population.

I used to run barefoot all summer when I was little and I can remember eating cucumbers and peas and stringbeans fresh from the garden after rinsing them. You help bring back memories. I took my share of bee stings on the bottoms of my feet, too, but luckily I am not allergic to them.

Oh! I'd love a pack! I am always looking for more butterfly attracting plants! Any left?

Downers Grove, IL(Zone 5a)

I would love a pack if you have any left -- will pop the SASBE in the mail as soon as you let me know it's OK! Looking forward to helping the bees any way I can.

Sandy
