I'm trying to whittle down my list of MG's that I want to grow this spring...or find a lot more trellises to grow them all on. (Working on that one, too)
So, I'm just curious as to which ones everyone else has on their grow list for this year?
I'm really looking forward to growing some of Emma's Grey's this year.
Alice
What MG's are you growing in 2008?
'Akatsuki No Umi' & 'Maisugata'... thanks to onalee! :-)

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/650582/
Absolutely gorgeous!
Alice
Alice, LOL some of the older JMG aren't shown much on here any longer, I know there are soo many new varieties that are out and being introduced, but Yosooi is truly a gorgeous glory and I hope to have lots of seeds by fall for swapping (presently working on getting a greenhouse to get setup so I can bring in this fall) sometimes my growing season gets cut short and I don't get as many seeds as I would like, so this greenhouse I am hoping will save me! I have lost numerous JMG's because of an earlier frost than predicted.
Thanks Beth for the photo, you beat me to the punch, I have saved EVERY seed packet from the first co-op that I was a part of for reference as well!! Those were some great co-ops too!!
Everyone has great lists going, can't wait for this growing season to see the photos!!
I also can't wait for fall trades to start :)
Laurrie
Nice!selection of m.glories, everyone plans to grow this year.
Alice,I laughed when I saw this thread! This is the question I TORTURE over every year!I have a seed box...and then a MORNING GLORY seedbox.I lay out all the MG packs and pick and choose...change my mind..okay,okay maybe this one, change my mind again..this goes on for four months.Get the seeds out-put them all back.I live on a wooded lot and there is only about 25 square feet of sun that every one of my plants fight over-who gets to bask and then the rest sorta pout.I play musical chairs with them all summer,so no one feels left out.
so a LIST?Heaven only knows which ones will win the lottery this year. But ALWAYS ALWAYS good old Heavenly Blue.I've grown gazillions of Japanese MGs but nothing takes your breath away like a pergola dripping with That deep sky blue.
Wow. I feel like such an under-achiever, now.
For me, success is more along the lines of, "Hey, look! They aren't dying!"
With my limited space and uncontrolled pollination, I'm just planning on sticking mainly to the stuff I have on hand from last year, plus a few planters with some of the nifty trades I've been able to make.
I've got commercial packets for:
-- Scarlett O'Hara (probably not, actually, though they are red)
-- Star of Yelta
-- Flying Saucers (Mis-labeled - they're actually Blue Stars)
-- Cardinal Climber (Ipomoea sloteri)
-- Giant White Moonflowers (Ipomoea alba)
-- Convolvulus (Convolvulus tricolor)
...and the last two seeds from a packet of Picotee Red that I just found in the bottom of the drawer
Mom sent me:
-- Candy Pink
-- "little blue flower" (I. hederaceae, I think)
...and from last year's largely-uncontrolled experiments:
-- "Unknown, but probably Star of Yelta"
-- "Randomly cross-pollinated mix" (Star of Yelta, Milky Way, Scarlett O'Hara, Candy Pink, Blue Stars, Picotee Double Blue and/or Picotee Single Red)
-- "Indoor Milky Way" which may or may not produce all-white blooms with ruffled edges
Finally, there are the ones that I've managed to trade:
-- Mt. Fuji
-- Yohjiro
-- Milky Way
Most of these will be grown in planters on my apartment's balcony, in an effort to recreate the success I had in shading my glass doors from the late afternoon sun, which kept my electric bills a bit lower last summer. The "special" ones (from trades and such) will get their own planters and an effort to at least keep track of how they're being pollinated. Most of the other "garden variety" types will just be allowed to climb all over some strings and make shade, with a repeat of the random pollination between whatever happens to be blooming that morning.
I will also be trying to grow some Flying Saucers.
Last January, this was the first morning glory that I ever tried growing, because I thought that the picture on the packet looked pretty neat. Everything in the packet turned out to be Blue Stars.
...so I bought another packet, from a different store. They also turned out to be Blue Stars.
...so I tried another one, from another store, by a different seed company. More Blue Stars.
It's become a personal grudge, now - I will eventually grow Flying Saucers!
I have friends who have offered me seeds from plants that produced Flying Saucers last year.
I've begun referring to my morning glories as "Project Blue Book" - aside from a bunch of photographs of unverified origin, I have as yet found no concrete evidence that Flying Saucers actually exist.
Great thread, I am going to start my wish trade list for seeds!! LOL
For me some definites will be
maybe ukigumo
maybe pink cypress
dracula
willow blue dianthus
ki chirimen
blue streaks
saznami
mikasa
red streaks
lavender chiffon
soloteri apricot candy
plum frost
lots of higes
good old blue silk
ruffled milky way
berry ice
I'm sure there are many more! I too have a seed box just for MGs...and it's still growing with all the great traders here!!
Probably anything and everything I can get my hands on!!! LOL!
In all seriousness ... seeds that I "plan" to be growing out this year:
Moon Flower Vine
Scarlet Morning Glory
Some very interesting crosses that Antoinette shared with me
Dracula
Kikyo Ten Ten
Yaguruma Blizzard (I have to have this one again in my garden!)
Several different Picotee
Several different Japanese MGs (from Japan)
Ipomoea aquatica (I can't wait to see this one!!!)
Pink Porcelain (One I got to name)
Cypress Vine (Growing for the hummers)
Jishi (growing it again to try and get some seeds. No seeds from the last one at all!)
Brazilian MG (Setosa) I love this vine!!!
Morning Glory Bush (Cute fuzzy seeds!)
Gypsy Bride
Spanish Flag (Hoping to get seeds this year!)
Orange Noah
Acapulco Blue
Blue Dawn
Beth sent me some seeds for one of her many amazing blooming vines. Not sure what it is called.
Plum Shadows (Love this one!)
Mt. Fuji mixes
And probably more I haven't listed yet.
Finding space for all of them or trying to grow them at different times will probably prove to be a challenge! :-) But I love the surprises!!!
It's gorgeous!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/775980/
I failed to mention all but one of the seeds on my list are from the generous people right here at this forum!!! Gotta ♥ that!!!
Everyone has such great lists! Still trying to narrow mine down.
Becky, I'm growing Kikyo Ten Ten this year also, for the first time. And I grow Spanish Flag every year and never get seeds from it...I keep thinking that I must just be missing them, but it never reseeds either.
I've searched the net repeatedly for new trellis idea's, not wanting any more of the same old ones you buy in the stores, the more I can find or make...the more MG's I can grow :)
Ukigumo
China Doll
Ipomoea Coccinea var. aurantia
Pink Satin
Wedding Bells
Noseleaf Hanaba crosses
Dainagon
Seiun
...for starters!
great list! hopefully I can add even more to your list Sandy ;) you've got mail!
Alice - Where are you getting your Spanish Flag seeds? I just love this vine, but sure have to look hard or find a trader to get seeds for it.
Boy! Oh boy! Some really nice lists of MGs to be grown this year! I hope everyone has much success and takes photos to share here with everyone! :-)
Becky,
I pretty sure that I bought mine from Swallowtail.
http://www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com/index.html
Alice - Bummer! I looked and don't see them listed. Maybe they sold out of them! :-( I wish I knew the secret to get to them produce seeds! I have a very small amount of seeds for this year (some left from last year's seed swap which I hope are still viable!). If anyone has some seeds they want to trade or share ... please d-mail me. I know this is not one of the typical MGs we showcase on this thread. But it really is a beauty!
Would anyone here have any extra seeds for a
yellow morning Glory or Pink Moon Vines would be very happy to pay for postage .
D-mail me if so :)) I would really appreciate them this summer.
I love all your list Never new there were so many maybe one day I would like more :)) .
susie
I started my first wave last week:
Hanahubuki
Keniak Ken Ya
Turbina corymbosa
Purple Feathers
Violet Feathers
Lavender Lady
The Hanahubuki and Lavender lady are already coming up! I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to start in the next wave.
This year is going to be the Year of the Vines for me. Along with morning glory I'm growing 6 other types of vines.
X
I'm growing only two kinds: Akatsuki no umi (Ocean at Dawn) and Ott's Purple. I haven't grown morning glories for years. I hope I will be able to save some seeds. I have yet to look up how to ensure they are pure, so maybe I will just be growing the Japanese ones, because I would like to save seed from them.
Becky, you did mean Spanish Flag (Ipomoea lobata)? They have it listed as Firecracker Vine (Mina lobata).
http://www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com/vines/firecracker.html
The plantfiles gives it 3 different synonyms....
Synonym:Mina lobata
Synonym:Ipomoea versicolor
Synonym:Quamoclit lobata
Alice
Oh! Thank you Alice. Yes, one and the same. Huh! Can't keep all these names straight. Sure gets confusing at times! I love this vine! It's smaller blooms, but so striking! One of my favorites!!
This year it's Wedding Bells and Kniola's Black Knight! Wedding Bells get grown in the back yard and Kniola's going on the front railing. Going to grow white sweet peas with the Kniola's for great contrast. Can't wait!
Kathy
oh that sounds pretty Kathy, the white intermixed with that will be stunning!
Kathy - Ya gotta take photos and post here on the MG forum so we can see how your MGs and Sweet Peas look! Sounds really pretty!! :-)
Hi!
I will take pics, that's for sure! I love the dark Kniola's, and have never grown them- last year was red, white and blue theme out front. The blues and whites (Heavenly Blue and Pearly Gates) bloomed profusely, but the reds (Scarlett O'Hara) failed to bloom with large numbers (and they bloomed later than the blue and white, although they were all started at the same time). Every year I do a different color scheme on the railing and this year I thought it was time for a darker color. I think you're right, OhioBreezy, it will be stunning! :-) Good luck to everyone with thier projects!
Kathy
Right back at you Joseph!
-Kathy
Hi, everyone!
Your lists are very ambitious and I can't wait until summertime to see more photos!

Shibouri JMG
Kikiyu Saki JMG
Roman Candles JMG
Star of Yelta
Rainbow Flash

And it's so much fun to think about the summer blooms on this cold and chilly day!
tabasco
Okay, here's my contribution, and as with tobasco most are from generous folks on this forum.
Moonflower
Ipomoea hederacea
Yaguruma Blizzard
Plum Shadows
Unknown Blue (to go with my color scheme of blues, white and purples)
Gray Fog
Also some old SOH for accent color (from somewhere else -- can't remember who)
A couple of seeds I'm hoping are crosses from last year's MGs
Maybe Heavenly Blue if I can identify the seeds, also from last year's crop
I'm going to wait till May and plant outdoors unless I get too antsy and start them inside! LOL
I am new to this forum, usually hang out in the rose forum.
This is the first time in many years that I am actually serious with starting to seed/plant MG.Looks like it is going to be a upcoming obsession i.e.my roses ! Looked thru ALL of the MG in the database yesterday and my list got longer and longer :-)

Wow, everyone started some already, me too. so far I've got about 200 seeds soaking from last night and about 200 seedlings already under lights... several are the same types, and several are from DGer's here
