Well, this ginger was in between the greenhouse and the fence, I had forgotten it was there. But, yes I am moving stuff out of the greenhouse. Moved and repotted some hibiscus last week. The garden is remarkably green and lush for Feb.
Fragrant Tropical suggestions?
Rita ~ do you plant your Plumerias in ground?
idk about her, but i put mine in a pot in the ground... they love it
And of course, here on the Island of Maui they are huge shade trees, blooming everywhere. Oh, the home of the tropicals. What glorious plants they are. Afraid Jenny has ruined me for my Texas garden. What I consider a tender little houseplant is big as the house here. I now understand what aromatherapy is supposed to be about. The sweet aromas mingle and smooth the senses everywhere. Sooo beautiful.
Aloha,
Kilikina
Look out! LouC will be going home to pack and move to Hawaii! LOL Glad you are enjoying the stay.
Diehrd ~ do you pull the pots and provide winter shelter or do they overwinter outdoors for you? Guess that is a dumb question, I just noticed your zone, sorry.
podster, the plumerias in the picture are in pots. I do have a plumeria that was too heavy to bring inside in the pot so I would put it in a hole in the yard every spring. In the fall I would take it out and store it bare-rooted for the winter. I have been doing this for over 5yrs. now.
I will have to do the same for a couple more that I have this spring. It is much easier to do this, when they are too big, awkward and heavy.
I learned this from texasbigleaves who grows monster plumerias.
podster
i think Osmanthus fragrans is one of the most incredible
ylang ylang
good old dependable begonia odoratas
plumeria
the white angel trumpet at night is intoxicating
hedychiums
michelia alba
rangoon creeper kinda smells like geen apples to me
jasmines i love. although night blooming jasmine to me should be planted away from the house because it can be so strong it is almost nauseating sometimes.
Please tell me what the beautiful folaige is... is that a Plumeria? I've never seen one. Or a plant like that anyway. I do need to check out the Rangoon creeper I believe.
Sure looks like a plumeria to me! What size pot do you have that baby in Rita? Is that one or more than one tree? It is beautiful! Now I see why you store it barerooted. So far mine I can still get up under my canopy on my porch. I do see where there may have to be a change in plans at some later time......
What are you feeding it?
Podster , the foliage in candelas' picture is a night blooming jasmine ( not 100% positive)
Texasgal77, It is only one plumeria that is in the ground. I would plant it in a mixture of yellow cow manure and peat moss. I would feed it Hibiscus plant food, found at Lowes.
My plant in the previous picture came from a cutting of a monster plant from Texasbigleaves .
Two more monster plumerias from Texasbigleaves' backyard. They are spectacular when in bloom, and the aroma is to die for.
Does
a mixture of yellow cow manure
Kristi, would like some plumeria seeds? I have a few I can send you, but I'm not sure if they're fragrant. Also ordered some cuttings from a recent co-op. . .can spare some too. Let me know.
Lana
Lana ~ thank you for your kind offer. Let me research a bit and I will let you know. I have no doubt they will do well in your area.
A question for all... how easy are these to start from seed? How long before the seed will deliver blooms? Can you tell I am impatient ~ lol
Podster , big mistake I meant to say Black Cow manure in the yellow bag. It is composted cow manure. LOL. and No, it does not only come from black cows.
Sorry ~ couldn't resist but I really wondered what yellow cow was... LOL
Grrrr... that is what I was afraid of. I might not live THAT long ~ lol Flowering Abutilon is the same way I will search for plants if I decide to add them. Too impatient a gardener. Thanks for that information Dutchlady!
Pod, they sprout very easily. Mine sprouted between 2-4 days using a damp paper towel in a baggie. I have a few mixed thai seeds and a few of 4 different varieties. Would love to send you some. If 2 years is too long for you, I will have cuttings too. Not sure how long on those, but surely less than 2 years? I am trying to match what you sent me. . .LOL.
d-mail Carol, AlohaHoya. Her daughter grows them commercially here on Maui. Carol lives on the Big Island but came here for the weekend. She could help you with all of the details.
LouC ~ what you doing here... get out and enjoy your vacation girl! LOL Talk to you when you get home... thinking of you and hoping you are absorbing all you can while there. pod
Dutchlady, that's great to know. You must be really good to get them to bloom before they've even rooted. No such luck here.
Osmanthus fragrans, sweet olive, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1450/ . Hardy to 7B according to the PF, and read the members' comments. :)
-Joe
Whoops, premature submission, I also agree re: jasmines. If I lived in your zone, I'd be growing gingers (hedychiums), the aforementioned tea olive, camellias, jasmines, gardenias, and brugmansias in my yard, under a canopy of bananas, cannas, eucalyptus, and palms (trachys, and the nice butia x jubaea crosses). I'd throw in vines like http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1884/ corkscrew vine , http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54070/ passion flower , and http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/893/ moon flower.
-Joe
Joegee ~ I should invite you to landscape for me. I love the image you painted.
Which Camellia is the fragrant variety? I love them but the ones I've seen are odorless.
As I mentioned in my first post, I find I grow many of the tropical plants that are discussed. My passion is for the fragrant ones. A few I grow are Brugs, Brunfelsia, Hoyas, Jasmines, Ginger and Osmanthus which is in bloom right now.
Podster, are you going to the RU in CS? I have a night blooming jasmin that really needs to be cut back. Want some? Also a gold flame honeysuckle.
I just snitched a list I grabbed from a web site googling "fragrant camellias" With apologies for all the caps. I did a cut n paste. :) As for gardenias, two that you might try (known for their general hardiness) are Kleim's Hardy and Chuck Hayes. I love the fragrance of Kleim's hardy, and it's a real trooper in hot weather.

From http://www.camellia.gulfcoast-gardening.com/selection/fragrant.htm . Half of these may not exist. I dunno for sure. You might try going to the southern gardening forum and asking for suggestions. :)
-Joe
P.S. Yes, I changed the wording. I suggested going to the camellia forum, which doesn't exist. :)

we have a camellia forum??
WOW! Good catch southerner. I thought for sure we did! We don't. Considering all of the other forums we have for odd genuses of plants I am actually shocked we don't. My bad, folks. :)
-Joe
P.S. I just suggested a camellia forum. We shall see. There have to be more than a handful of camellia afficionados in here. :)

I am a lazy DGr... I'd say there are fragrant Camellias! Thank you -Joe!!!
I had an elderly man that always brought me the most beautiful bouquets of Camellias every winter. They had no fragrance. I sniff every one I have seen and never found a fragrant one. Now I need to go shopping. For this, I would make room.
Now Gardenias and I have been unsuccessful many times...
Silverfluter ~ no to the RUs (work) but thanks for the generous offer. 8 )
Podster, are you going to the daylily sale near Marylyn's house on May 10? I am planniing on being there and I could bring them then.
Sadly no, Saturdays are a work day for me. Leaves me out of the RUs, etc. The Daylily sale sounds like great fun with all... Thanks for the offer though. pod
oh i just thought of one... idk if it was already mentioned, but crinum americanum is a fragrant native tropical, as well as any of the other crinums, but my favorite is C. americanum
Crinums are wonderful! I have three different ones but not the C. americanum. Had to go look it up. Really fragrant? It is very pretty.
i havent gotten a chance to smell any of mine, but i have heard wonderful things about them
sure don't want to upset anyone but the criniums grow enormous on the island. Actually, everything does. Not only is it all very large but grows wild, not in contained gardens. Taking many more pictures tomorrow of Jen's garden. She hacks away at brugs because they get huge, tall, round, did I say BIG. I have a couple of sad little pots at home that I planted from seed and have been petting and hoping they live. This is the last night and I cannot encourage all of you enough to make a plan to see Maui in your lifetime. There are no equals.
Aloha,
Christi
I am sitting here reading these posts, lol, and you all are making me very envious. You are talking about whether the plant can take your heat, and its 22 degrees outside with a winter storm of ice and snow~!
Brrrrrrrrrrr Lovely Ohio............
I am looking for some wonderfully fragrant plants also, so I am reading all I can about Tropicals. I remember having Stephanotis in my wedding bouquet, even the flowers dried had a wonderful scent to them. I have my grow lights up and my seeds in flats in front of the fireplace where they are snuggled up nice and warm, the Sweet Annie came up overnight! If anyone has any seeds for fragrant flowers or starts of them that they would like to trade, please take a look at my list and see if there is anything you would like. My friend over winters my tenders in her heated greenhouse, thank God.
Thank you, Kathy
