if you believe in companion planting...roses love garlic
We have lots of diff perennials around our front porch roses with diff bloom times; incl. feverfew, columbine, white bee balm, balsam and penstemon husker red. We also have a split rail fence lined with Queen anne's lace and white and green zinnias that is really pretty in between the roses.
I think it would really depend on what you like, what you have seed wise and want to find a home for, and what you want to create color scheme wise in that area...there are so many choices :) oh how fun ~ enjoy your planning!
Piggie Swap babies and seed starting
Hey gang - I'm thinking of starting a new thread for us - this one's getting rather long....
Can we have the piggy photo again please? I'd really miss it... :-)
My things with roses are Clematis behind them and then astrantia in front of it & am going to put some columbine in there too!!
This is awesome!!!
I just posted a question about Canna seed and when to start it in the Annuals forum, but I can see I made a grave error and should have posted it here!
When and how do I plant Canna seed? Has anybody grown it from seed before? It's supposed to bloom the first year from seed. I don't even like them much, but the hummers are supposedto, so I'm going to see what they look like here...probably like a blue duck out of water.
Dryad, do you have the piggy photo to start a new thread, or shall I? Of course a new thread right when I ask my question LOL!
Meredith, thanks so much on the Paw Paw reminder....did your seeds feel very light for their size? I am so sorry I didn't know to refrigerate them! 5 Days! Holy Cow! They are persnickety things. I have mine soaking, but they didn't feel right, even when I pulled them from the package -- not very heavy for their size. I think I killed them y leaving them on the beds waiting to send out. :(((.

Ok, Peeps, You get to answer my Canna questions, and then go here -- it's getting too slow to load.

I take my canna seed and scratch the surface with the sanding bit from my dremel to where I see the undercoating or the white part. If you don't have a dremel you can rub the seeds between to bricks, this will save your fingers from using a file. Plant 1-2 inches deep and water. Mine germinated in 10 days. I will try to post a pic later tonight when my daughter brings the camera home from work.
Thanks Robynznest - for posting here as well as the new thread.
Come on over to the new thread folks!
I am really bad at determining weight for size. I always have a problem picking produce because of this! Lol - I am just going to hope for the best. I did think the outer coat looked a tad shriveled around the edge. Very faintly though, and this could be totally normal for all I know. They were on the top of my list of things to get in spring, so no biggy. If I end up buying some, maybe I'll get some bonus Orange Dogs with them. He He
