I sure got my money's worth paying school taxes. I had kids in public schools from 1977 until 2005! Um, I think that's 28 or so years.
Do you do your own taxes?
I couldn't believe my ears last night when my husband said he thought he'd file our taxes with TurboTax through State Farm! I've been telling him for the last couple of years that it was safe but he didn't listen to me...but let one of his friends tell him and so now he thinks it's OK. (Does that sound about right girls?)
Ok. I have a rental property I purchased in December 2004. I've never used TurboTax, but have a co-worker who echoes what I've read in this thread. Can I still use the online program as a homeowner? This may sound "dumb" but I've never owned a home. I only lived in it for 9 months, got married and moved into my DH's home in November 2005. So, I've never filed taxes on the house since I bought it. And, I have had renters in it since March of 2006. Any advice on making this painless would be MOST appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, you can. Both TurboTax and TaxCut ask questions about anything that could affect taxes - and rental property is one of them. You answer the questions and fill in the blanks, and the programs fill out the correct tax forms for you to turn in. It will also tell you which forms you need to have to get the correct numbers, and etc. My husband and his siblings co-own a cabin in Maine that their grandfather built, and it counts as rental property, so we have to fill out that form, too. I don't know how you would go about paying any back taxes you might owe, though... You might need to talk to a real CPA about that.
Gymgirl,
You say you have never owned a house, but then say you lived in one (you bought?) for 9 months.
If you did purchase a house, you can dedict the interest, and taxes paid for the calendar year(s) you lived there.
Send me a dmail and we can discuss.
