Crocus

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Oh well it's a good job you emailed them bonitin, lol, how do people know if they don't put it on their web site? There are others in Holland who only accept bank transfers so one would assume they are the same. Perhaps they shuold be aware of the need to advertise their payments system on their site, I can't believe they don't!

Blue Pearl is pretty, nore blue on the inside petals.

Thanks for the information!

Do you mind me inserting a question about Crocuses in here? I had planted a few bulbs that were free with an order 7 or so years ago, and really didn't pay attention to them. They've been uprooted, kicked around, and otherwise disrespected, but they keep blooming! Now I've come to have a soft spot for them and I'd like to plant some more like them but I don't know what they are! Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!

It could be a C. tommassinianus cultivar, Whitewell Purple has a whitish centre but your pic isn't very clear to see if it has. It is one which will do well in shady areas.

Sorry, my camera doesn't have a lens for closeup shots. I should get one. Thanks for the suggestions-- C, Tomassisinianus is listed in the catalog I always order from, so there is a good chance you are right. Even more so because their description suggests that is "one of the hardiest." I guess I'll get some next fall and find out! Thanks again!

Another of my darker ones started opening today, but as it was a dull rainy one, it didn't fully opened, it has a partially purple-coloured stem under the flower head;

snow crocus are popping up here!

Yellow seems to be the first color to bloom...

How do all those bulbs seem to be so much quicker than here? hmmm
I just did get my yellow crocus like critterologists to start a day or so ago, and some light lavender ones and 1 reticulata iris. muscari leaves, and little daffodil nubs starting. Oh and tulip nubs. I was starting to think i wasn't gonna have any bulbs to return this year!lol

Adrian, MO(Zone 6a)

well critter, i think i might be on schedule with your part of the country!lol

My tommies are getting pounded by the rainstorms here.

I couldn't even look out back after the big storm came through this afternoon... and we're getting more wind & rain tonight... At least the daffs are just starting up, so it shouldn't affect that part of the show.

Gent, Belgium(Zone 8a)

Very lovely crocusses critterologist! Is the soft yellow 'cream beauty' ?
I love your tommies, Claypa! what a heavenly blue!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've planted crocus bulbs several times into that daff/DL bed, so even checking my notes I couldn't say for sure... but judging from the size of the clump, that soft yellow crocus was probably one of the first to go in, so I think it was just from a batch of "mixed snow crocus." I like it!

Very nice photo claypa. How did you get the depth of field? I'm running into focus issues.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

A lot of my focus issues were solved with my new camera (Sony Cybershot T200, nice & compact)... it does a good job of auto-focusing on macro shots, and one of my favorite features is "touch this spot on the view screen to focus here" -- no more photos of blurry flowers and perfectly focused leaves or bits of trash! :-)

Claypa, that is indeed a gorgeous photo! And I always love the photos that Wallaby & Bonitin post -- they just capture lighting that makes the blooms glow!

Mudpiegirl, does that bloom look to you like the one Claypa posted? I'm thinking it could be a "tommie" (Crocus tommasinianus, if I'm spelling that right... check me by looking it up in PF!)... 'Ruby Giant' is a nice cultivar that's easy to find, although the color of the one you posted looks more like the 'Whitewell Purple' I planted along my driveway... or maybe this 'Lilac Beauty' from B&B: http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/?sku=13-0161.

critter...thanks. Think I just need to take more photos after the winter break. Wish I could remember why some come out and some don't. Here is c. sieberi firefly--my earliest crocus this year:

I planted some of this this fall, mixed with C. sieberi 'Tricolor' (one of my very favorites), but they haven't shown up yet... probably two reasons for that... 1. they're planted under sod, which seems to warm up more slowly than the beds, and 2. first year blooms seem to lag by a week or two -- anybody else notice that?

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

I have c. sieberi Tricolor in the lawn 15 feet away from c. sieberi Firefly. The Firefly has been up for several days but do not see Tricolor shoots yet.

First year planting both and both put under sod.

Yes! The tricolor crocus are in bloom here today, at long last. I also have buds on my muscari azureum. Cannot wait. The lousy winter is over. Carol

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got 'Firefly' and 'Tricolor' up and blooming here and there, too... the ones I planted in the grass last fall are not all waking up at the same time. Hmm.

critter....none of my tommies are up but the Dutch crocus are starting to appear.

Tammy...nice deep purple! Vernus Twilight? Only my yellow Dutch crocus are up.

David_Paul - could be. I planted a small number years ago and have divided them
several times. I do love the deep color as well.

They are a delight aren't they?
This is an established clump of tommasinianus

Tammy, so pleased spring has sprung!

Galanth, nice clump you have! My other species in a different place have lots of self set seedlings but the originals have dwindled, moles might be responsible. I have one small group of C. tricolor open, but they got damaged, ;~(

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Galanthophile....nice photo. No tommies up here yet but they should emerge anyday. Here is c. sieberi Tricolor:

oooo Galanthophile... those tommie's are glorious!

I got a mix of those from Van Engelen maybe two years ago.
They are just wonderful - but your's are much prettier than
my little singular blooms. Maybe they'll get happy and
give me a nice clump like that some day...

Wallaby - yes! I am delighted to be sharing some spring bloom
at last!

I've so enjoyed everyone's blooms! In much of this country the show is still going strong, mine are just now really getting going. I've started a new thread, as this one is getting long, and would love to see lots more pics!
