I have discovered....
And so I did. I used an old piece of fly wire to hold some soil for the mother plant (as she is accustomed to growing in soil, whereas the kiki's are surviving in the air) I then tied it around the bottom of the vase with some plastic coated wire, and put a nail in the tree, and hung it using a piece of wire looped around the mother vase only. Of course, disguised the wire and fly wire bag with obligatory Spanish moss. It is on the South eastern side of the tree, morning sun only.
I have now drooled ALL over my keyboard...what amazing colors!!!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4518876 Did anyone ID that one yet? Love those colors in the Neoregelia panama too...goodness ALL of them...simply goreous!!!
I have a lot of bromeliads that were given to me when someone was moving. They had been given to her & she didn't know any of their names. Hers were growing between the roots of a massive banyan tree. I don't have much shade & have been moving them around trying to determine how much sun they can tolerate. If they are producing pups, does that mean they are happy there, even if the parent plant leaves look a little traumatized? Will the pups be better acclimated to the sun than the parent was? Help! thanks.
Hi chantell, no one has ID'd that one yet, but I think it may be Aechmea rainbow, or possibly Orlandiana. I've just purchased an A. orlandiana 'Ensign' from ebay and am awaiting the postie, also a Neoregelia 'Hannibal Lector' and an N. 'Lady Di' should be on their way soon! Theres just soooo many to choose from!
Hi terichris, If your Bromel are producing pups, you must be doing something right! If they must be in light, try early morning, and try to give them protection from the midday and afternoon sun. You could use a potted plant as shade, or some cloth on a clothes airing frame. The pups may become accustomed better than the parent, but time will tell.
Sue
Thank you Sue. I just keep thinking about a fruit tree producing its best crop the year before it dies...... When my garden matures they will have much more shade, it is all freshly planted.
I was thinking the same thing, but that plants flower right before they die. It's not flowering is it? LOL
I just recieved an ebay purchased Brom in the mail today and it was rotted through the stem and full of ants! Very dissappointing! I have requested another for free and asked them to clean it up first so I don't inherit another gardeners greeeblies! Hopefully they'll be accommodating or else i'll have to leave negative feedback.
This is the biggest ant that came out of it, (more than a centimetre in the body and a green colour) and there were 2 more smaller, pale coloured ants that held their bottoms up quite aggressively!
What a dissappointment! NO flowering, thank goodness!
Wow Sue...THAT would certainly not make me a happy camper!!! If the seller doesn't make good - I'd be leaving both negative feedback PLUS listing their seller name/store here in at least the Brom forum maybe even Watchdog if they're listed or you can create a listing for them.
He's offered me an Aechmea pectinata or an Aechmea blanchettiana "Orange form" and said he was shocked about the rot, and also said he had cleaned it up with the hose. That was the biggest rot of all! I also noted when I went back and looked at the item description, that the photo listed as "The plant you will recieve" was not the plant I recieved as mine had no pink in the leaf at all, and the one in the pic did. I think he should send me one of each as replacement, as I bought an Aechmea blanchettiana 'Yellow form' for $20 off ebay a while ago, But I'll be happy to recieve anything as long as it is robust and ready to grow!
I recieved another (Neoregelia 'Princess Di') on the same day, from another vendor, and it was cleaned up beautifully, packaged well and had a little letter with lots of useful information in it. I emailed her straight away to tell her how happy I was with my purchase.
Today I bought an Ananas 'Tri-colour' from work for $5! Bargain! Is anyone else out there got the bug this bad?
There is a plant fair tomorrow up the mountains, and they usually have a great selection of Broms, but I'm not going! I really have to do some housework! LOL
Sue
Glad he's doing ok by you! I'd probably avoid buying from him again...goes without saying. Esp. if he's listing pics as the ONE you'll receive and it end up not...grrrr!!!
Bad sue, bad, bad Sue! I went!
Got many bare rooted Kikis to pot up. Some common some not. I want to get some stock happening aswell as some fillers in the garden. Somebody make it stop!!!!!!
Hi Terichris, you have a really nice selection of plants happening there! I am not yet familiar with your zones there in the U.S of A. How cold are your winters? Are you just coming into spring?
We had the treat of frost once this year, but it never happened. It is Spring here, it got to 89 yesterday. Been in a drought and are thankful for recent rains. It gets hot in summer & very mild winters. Its nice.
It looks like you have quite a bit of space. Is your yard large? Mine is tiny & I just wish I had some space!
I've got too much space. 2 and a half acres! I started gardening to get rid of the grass. Now I've got lots of gardens and still heaps of grass! I spens about 7-10 hours a week in the garden, sometimes more, aswell as weeding and gardening 4 days a week in the community, and I go to a horticulture course one day a week. I think I'm obsessed!
Our weather must be a bit like yours. We had a very minor frost for the first time in 6 years. It gets down to about 5 degrees celcius here in winter and up to 40 degrees celcius in summer, but fortunately its more usually around 30 degrees celcius. We get most of our rain in summer, but also get regular showers the rest of the year, because we are by the coast.
We are just coming into Autumn, so I am watching everything slow down and start to go to sleep. I'll be glad when the weeds go nighty night!
Off to check the forums. Nice chatting to you Terichris.
Sue
Yes, weather is similar. Lucky you to be taking classes as well. i would love to make time for some formal education!
That is pretty! I was just at our library yesterday & saw one of the large ones like in your picture on the right side, middle. I had never noticed them before. They continue to grow from the top. Do they still produce pups? Do you know what are these called? I love the "substantialness" of them.
