Unsure of type as yet, suspect Aechmea, but could also be Neoregelia.
Bought in a pot of 4 different Broms for $25.
It has grown 2 pups this year.

Small Neoregelias that go bright red when in good light. look great in baskets, on logs and indoors for short periods.
Think fireball or "Short and Sweet"

This one is super dooper fast growing! It will cover logs, mounds and tree trunks very quickly.
This is in a 150mm pot!

This is another Neoregelia. It is very Stoloniferous and will grow up trees.

This is most of my potted collection. They live under the gum trees and are always covered in leaves, bark and sticks.
I tidy them up every now'n'then and am in the midst of weaning pups off quite a number of them.
I hope you all enjoyed the pics

How lovely! They look very happy. I particularly liked that neophytum. My bromies live under oaks and pine trees so I understand about having to clean them up. The acorns drop in the water and end up germinating so I have to pull seedlings out the bromies!
Melanie

Coffs Harbour, Australia

LOL Melanie! Gum nuts do that too!
I had been watching a Neophytum on Ebay, and it went for way more than I was prepared to spend, but I have since discovered a local Bromeliad and Orchid nursery with excellent prices, and they had the same one, so now its mine. Its becoming very difficult not to go there as it is on my way back from town, and the ideal time to go plant shopping, is always on the way home! . Anything I'm looking for, they will try to source for me, and meantime I keep track at the nurseries and on Ebay for the current price. I've just found a nursery selling Alcantarea imperialis for relatively cheap and am avoiding that one for now too! LOL
It's become an(other) addiction.

I'm very fortunate to have a few Bromeliad clubs in the area that sell at the festivals held by the University of South Florida's botanical gardens. They're always very reasonable and it's nice to buy from people who love the plants as much as I do.

It's nice to meet a few experts too isn't it as they are too happy to fill you in about anything you want to know! I have recently found a web address for a relatively local brom club and i have sent some pics down and received a couple of ID's which has been very helpful!
I highly recommend joining a club, and may even do it myself!
Sue
Pic is the beginnings of the clean up and the clouds are rolling in for more rain!

This one has been on this tree for a year, supported by a stocking. i'm thinking of potting it instead to see if I an get it to pup.
8/3/08- moved it to the other side of the tree to recieve morning sun.
Have it Identified as Aechmea 'Bert' A cross between A. fosteriana and A. orlandiana

Hey Sue ..........

Looks like Aechmea Nudicaulis on your tree. You don't need to do a thing with it; it will pup when it is ready .......... and the pups will latch on to your tree. Potting does not facilitate pup production - flowering does! The yellow canna is a knockout!

John

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Ooh, my Aechmea nudicaulis just bloomed for me!

OOOhhhh, I have an Aechmea nudicaulis variegata somewhere! I'll have to find it and put it with the collection.
Thanks for that John, I think I will move it up to the Bromeliad garden as I am trying to make a decent display. I got some logs from the forrest yesterday and mounted some rock orchids, Neoregelias (fireball and tigrina) and draped over some Spanish moss (tillandsia usneoides) I'm also grouping the Broms into their species, dependent on light requirements. I think I've also managed to Id a couple.
I think this might be Aechmea lueddemaniana "Mend"

Aechmea hoenana, or possibly 'Mary Brett' as i googled Hoenana and got no results, but that was the name on the pot.

Unknown.
Would like it if it was Aechmea orlandiana, but I think its A. 'Rainbow' which has A. orlandiana as a parent.
