While I was looking around for information on Ann Lovejoy for Outta, I found this. Very cool . . .

Ann Lovejoy at Harmony Hill
Ann is a fabulous writer. If you don't have time or cannot afford to go, buy anything she has written: she is one who is able to literally paint the landscape for you with words & you'll feel as though you are right there with her.
Excellent resource of gardening wisdom - so glad she resides in our region & knows it inside out.
Thank you, Katye. I'm still in the process of navigating threads here and almost didn't see this one. I appreciate that you were thinking of me! I only have one book of plants for the region ~ the Pojar/McKinnon book, which is good, but I'm still stumped on one plant I found this weekend. I am always looking for more resources and will put her books on my birthday list! Thanks a bunch!
Just looked at the link. Wow...the "Luscious Midlife Retreat" looks Mahhhvelous!
Sheri - what plant did you find? curiousity is my nickname!
I didn't find any plants on the website...got stuck looking at the seminars and retreats! Are there plants there as well? **phew**
perhaps I misunderstood - you posted that you were stumped on one plant you found this weekend. I was hoping to alleviate my curiousity & live vicariously through your plant purchases - !!!!
I had to laugh because I am keeping myself away from any possible ordering of plants online, but seeds are ok. Also I have forbidden myself to check the local nurseries. I will let you know how successful I am at obeying myself - LOL!!
All these rules I must set because I have no greenhouse & no more room at the inn, so to speak.
...seeds are ok? Why, because they're tiny? =:0)
Katye, If you are successful, please let me in on the secret?
Outta - as Katye said, buy anything from Ann Lovejoy. She stresses working with plants that work with your environment and her designs are naturalistic with a twist. I love what she does from a design perspective . . .
Did you see the potager she's designed at Harmony Hill?
Ooops Katye...my bad. I started a new thread with pictures of two plants...one apparently is a snowberry. The other remains unsolved. It looks kind of like a rose. I, for some reason, cannot get a good picture of the stems, but will post it here anyway. They are red and thorny and look like rose stems to me (although I've never had a rose bush...just reminds me of the ones I've seen). There is a red "berry," which also looks kind of "rosey" to me, which is red and ages to a brown/rust wrinkled looking thing, orange and stringy on the inside, about 1/2" around. There is only 3 "berries" on this plants...well, were only 3 ~ I stepped on one while taking the picture and that's how I know about the inside. Anyway, I've been through and through and through the book and can't figure it out. I know it's wild because this property has never had anyone living on it...we bought it "wild."

Hi Outta, We do get wild roses around here, and the thorn and seed thing look like a rose hip to me. Might take a look at Nootka rose?
K59, is this the center that's featured in one of her books, where she lives now?
You know, I don't know whether she lives there or not. I was actually surprised to find that she had what appears to be such a strong affiliation with this group.
And I don't really know anything about her personally - I just like the pictures of the gardens in her books. She really knows how to suck you in and make it look like you can do it, too . . . LOL
So one of her books talks about the center. Hmmm. Interesting. I wonder if that's true. Will have to do some Internet research and see what I can see.
You might look for this one?
This book talks about how she designed her garden and a little bit about her retreat center.

Ann Lovejoy lives on Bainbridge Island. She became aquainted with Harmony Hill when her husband got cancer. Harmony Hill is a retreat for cancer patients. It is located on the south shore of Hood Canal on Hwy#106 out of Belfair. It is on a hill above the canal and is beautiful. They have an open to the public fair every August. I go with the Master Gardener's and do a plant clinic.
Oh, OK! They are separate. Thanks for the info. What a neat thing to be associated with.
Anne had her house on bainbridge and her ti chi center or studio there at her house. I'm sure that is what she is talking about. She sold the place and I think it is a Jewish church and the took out all the garden. A nice lady called me the other day from Master gardeners and was looking for volunteers to gardebn there durnign the summer. I think that was the long and the short of it . She wanted me to teach a class for master gardeners. Which I will In June. If you are interested you can D-mail me for her info. It sounds like a great place.
Susy ~ Thanks. I'll have to wait until it sprouts leaves to know for sure, but the one picture I saw that showed the branches sure looks like it.
Cattledogs, What kind of class are you going to teach to the Master Gardener's and to what group? Kitsap County? I am with Mason County and live about a 1/2 mile from Harmony Hill.
It is Kitasap county and mason county. The lady who contacted me lives in Vaughn on the key penisula. I want to make living picture frames but I would like to try one first and debra wanted a price if not I could do planted containers. She had no real ideas.. Do you? Most groups we cruz the gardens and shop. She wanted a hands on class. How is your puppy doing? Heidi and Dragonfly
Thanks for asking about Poot. She didn' t make it. She had a good last day. Got to see her favorite people and go for a walk around the house and then in the evening she went downhill really fast. Our hearts are broken. I haven't heard of this for Mason County. We usually have an education session after our general meeting the second Tuesday of each month. The picture frames sound good and containers are always of interest. Or were the groups coming to yourplace? I don't go on any outside stuff because of my ailing husband and my 90 year old mother. :) And all the days I do my necessaries. Patricia
Patricia - I'm so sorry to hear about Poot. Would love to see a picture of her if you have one.
I do have pictures of course but not digital ones. I do have a digital camera and my computer and printer have all those functions, it is me that doesn't know how any of it works.
It's no big deal - just thought it would be nice to see your pup. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Oh, and - I'm caught in the middle. Boxes of photos that I can't share because they're not digital and, for a long time, files of digital photos that I couldn't share because I couldn't figure out how to write them to CD.
Hi willow it will be out here so sorry you will miss it. I don't get out very much either. I'm so so sorry to hear about your dog. I don't think that there are many things better. I'm so glad he got to be with you for his short life because I know he was spoiled rotten and loved every minute of it. And gave everyone so much joy. Heidi and Dragonfly
Is there some way to scan regular pictures into the computer? This is probably the wrong forum for that question but photos are a big part of gardening. This spring I will get some digitals of my place and see if I can learn something new. I will soon be very involved in our Master Gardener Plant Sale. This will be my second year as chair and my fourth as Treasurer.
You can get a scanner pretty cheaply (check Craig's list or ask on Freecycle.org for your area). They work like copy machines.
Kit's Cameras (and probably every place else, like Costco, Walmart, Rite-Aid, etc. that sells photo printing) will scan photos for you and the quality is probably better than what you can do at home. I think it costs about .75 a photo - of course, the more you do, the less expensive it is. As I recall from a conversation with them the other day, it's less expensive if they have negatives to convert to digital, rather than the actual photos.
Willow ~ It's really quite easy to scan pix into the computer. I do it all the time, particularly with old family pix that I want to preserve or post to my "My Space" or my family tree stuff. It's a nice way to keep them and, with the proper enhancement software, you can touch up, fix, and/or restore pix that have faded or are spotty, etc. New scanners are fairly inexpensive and, although a used scanner can be bought for next to nothing, a new one is guaranteed to have all the software included so that scanning to your computer is really simple. If you buy used, you may or may not get the software with it ~ make sure it's included with your purchase of a used scanner.
Thanks for the info on scanning outta and Katie
Anyone planning on taking any of Ann's classes?
The Mason County Master Gardener's are thinking about working with Ann at Harmony Hill. She can't be there all the time and the prison crew comes on a regular schedule. I now go down to St. Andrews House Retreat and work with their crew on Tuesday mornings. We may combine a group for both places. We have members in Belfair and Hoodsport, Union and Shelton. She would give workshops and educational things we could attend at Harmony.
Willow,
Please let us know when you get classes scheduled. Thanks, Rachel
Rach, Ann Lovejoy's classes are: February 16, March 2, and March 15. one-day-workshops. Details and registration at: www.harmonyhill.org/retreats/lovejoy.html
We decided at our MG meeting today that we will work with her at Harmony Hill and it created a lot of excitement. We had an education hour with a local landscaper "Queen Anne Landscape". Rhoda, she was great. Totally green and native.
Ooh, maybe we could put that on our calendar too?
Good idea susy!
