I am as mad as .................

I live in the country in a trailer. It is common out here to every now and then to have a mouse come in. My lazy cat just looks at them and well thats all he does. Last night I had some cherokee rose hips that I laid out to dry and two other kinds of large seeds. They were on the corner of my desk in the computer room/sewing room. Just before I went to bed I told my hubby I thought I heard something russling paper. He did not hear it. Well this morning my seeds are gone, even the ones I droped on the floor. All that was left is the paper they were laying on. I have been so upset all day about this. Then on top of that I had a beautiful pine tree about 30' tall by the driveway. It was technically on county property ao the truck came by and flatened the backside near the power line. I cried when I saw them do it. The tree was 6' or more from the stupid line. I have been pruning it so they would not do this. I was not able to get out there in time to try and stop them.
It's just been one of them there days. YOu know, when you wish it was tomorrow and this was all over with.

This too will pass...don't worry, be happy.

If you can find the nest you will find most of your seeds too, i had a load go missing in my shed a few years back, i found the nest when i moved things around, and there was my sees, the mouse had been killed in a trap i set, so the seeds never got eaten.

I sympathize so much with you. I hate those blankety blank mice. They will eat anything. I haven't seen any for awhile (knock on wood). We have lots of cats. I can also relate about the trees - we didn't lose any to the bureaucracy but our neighbor lost some beautiful pine trees to the county.

Yep...I lost a big bunch of sunflower seeds I collected 2 years ago to the mice. It is irritating to say the least.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I feel bad for you. I really hate killing anything even mice. I had to give up last winter and put out decon. Like I said killing goes against everything in me but sometimes you just have to protect your property. I am sorry but they eat on a lot of things and not just seeds. I tried to catch them in a live trap and they got out of it so I feel sometimes you have no choice. So get that decon and don't feel bad.

Well, doggone it, Janet. I'm sorry you had a bad time there! The only seeds I've lost to mice were sunflower seeds in a large plastic garbage container we keep for our birdfeeder seed.

It had been a while since we'd refilled the feeders and I didn't notice the tiny hole chewed at the bottom of it. When I removed the lid and plunged my bucket down into the can, all I came up with was empty hulls! He/they had a nice little nest in the bottom of that can. I had to laugh...Can't you just see these mice with enormous bellies, reclining on the hulls and letting out satisfied belches as they discuss the rodent news of the day?

But those weren't seeds I'd harvested and saved for a special purpose, either! Sorry about your bad day.

Hi all, Today was a much better day. The doctor said hubby is doing well and that I can take him fishing. We will go tomorrow. hopefully we will catch something. Anyway, thanks for all of your thoughts. I got that mouse last night. So hopefully there are no more.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

We keep our birdseed in a large tin Popcorn can with a lid, just don't leave the lid loose like we did once!!! Them critters need pretty sharp chompers to get through the bottom. Never did find my Caladium bulbs I put away in the garage last year, I think either mice or squirls got em.

I have a very sensitive nose and can smell things others can't smell. Once my best friend had a bad odor in her house and could not find it. She called me. I sniffed it out and found a fermenting dead mouse. Gross! I have taken years of kidding about that. Friends call me and ask if my nose is for hire. I hope this confessional at least brightens your day.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Me, too, Woodspirit1 - I have a "nose that knows", too. My husband rolls his eyes when I utter the familiar words, "do you *smell* that? What *is* that?!" LOL

Portland, OR(Zone 8a)

Hope you catch a whole frying pan full...I really dislike tree butchers. Dee

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Tree butchers? Mice? I'm plum corn-fused!

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Janet about your Cherokee rose hips Well I will fix that tomorrow if not it will be Tuesday The old poney is not fast as it was in the old days Tell me if you plant a seed from a rose will it come back the same rose or does it revert back to root stock? I don t mean the Cherokee I mean one that has been budded

(Zone 5a)

jcf just give your cat food in the morning and let him get hungry in the evenings and he will start to catch the rats.
I am sorry to hear about your tree and know how you feel watching something you have planted destroyed, things will get better so keep your chin up.
