Could any one help me find the identity of this beetle? I live in the appalachians mountains (if that helps) and if you could help identify what these beetles are munching on that would be very helpful too.

That's your standard japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) . I'm guessing that you saw them back in summer as they are only active during hot weather, usually from the first of June into August. I can't id the plant though from that picture. Do you have a less zoomed in one?
Thanks that helps a lot. Unfortunately I do not have a wider angle picture of the foliage. Yes I did take this picture this past summer towards the end of June.
Just give a general description of the plant will help - is it a annual, perennial, tree, etc? Do it have flowers or fruits and what do they look like? The leaves look very vaguely like gerbena daisy - it just popped in my mind.
