Oops I was on the old thread, DUH!!!

Okay, another House Sparrow??

Double Duh for me. I don't understand the threads yet. I'll learn though. I have a bird at my feeder in 7b that I do not recognize. I haven't been able to get a picture. It's slightly larger than a finch. It has a green (olive) head and is green back to it's feathers. I believe it's chest is olive too. It has dark colored wings with two definite white wing bars on it. I tried for a picture yesterday but was unsuccessful. It likes the flat screen feeder I have - both times i have seen it it was there. Yesterday it picked up a bread crumb - I had thrown a few in among the seeds just to see what would happen. If anyone has any ideas from this very slight description, I would appreciate it. I called Wild Bird and they said it sounded like a Ruby Crowned Kinglet but it does not look like the picture in my bird book. Thanks.

Check out Pine Siskin. But when you say "slightly larger than a finch", do you mean "slightly larger than a House Finch" or "slightly larger than an American Goldfinch" - there's a fair difference in size between those two finches, both common in your area.

I thought the Pine Siskin's had lines on their backs and chest - not sure how to describe the look. In any case, I will try for a picture and then you will be able to identify it. Today is a very windy day here in NC so I'm not sure if the birds will come out this afternoon. The bird was heavier than a house finch and slightly taller I believe. Let me see if I can capture it on film and then you will be able to identify it with ease! I'll be back when I have the pic! Thanks.

Here I go again, needing help with identifying hawks/eagles.

This one was larger than any hawk I've ever seen; but it didn't seem quite big enought to be an eagle. Despite the red tail feathers, I don't think it's a red-tailed hawk. Notice the dark breast ... not white & speckled like a red-tailed hawk. I also considered a Golden Eagle; but the overall size and beak seem too small for an eagle. So experts, what the heck is is?????

Sticking my neck out but I think it is a red-tailed Hawk. Sibley's has a light, intermediate and dark. The dark mark on the leading edge of his wings is what makes me say Red-tailed.

I got one yesterday that I'm not sure of either, that is colored like yours (not near as close though!) I was thinking it is a Red Tail and it sounded like a Red Tail.

Thanks Angele. I guess it would be boring if they all looked alike; but the different variations and morphs sure can get confusing. LOL :-)

Can anyone please help me ID a little sparrow like bird at our BOSS tray feeder today with a white spot about as big as a dime low on a brownish and white stripey breast (it's not a white throated sparrow).

Can't find a sparrow type bird in my ID books showing a white spot on the striped breast...thanks for any help...

And sorry no photo...I'm not quick enough for this one...

Melbourne, FL

nanny, yours looks like a Turkey Vulture to me.

Merritt Island, FL(Zone 10a)

Jane...Red-tailed Hawk. One of several color variations

nanny...Turkey Vulture-its vocalizations are very soft and un-hawklike. Somebody else was making the noise.

Marlton, NJ

How about a Song Sparrow tab?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Well there were 2 large birds soaring, but I could only get a shot of the one...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Judy, Did your sparrow look like this one?

deb-- thanks, but, no, not a song sparrow.

Ours had a very stripey breast with a dime sized white spot...

Does anyone know of a good sparrow comparison web page I can look at?

tabasco, try this site

Who is this 'lil one please.

Lily, that is a White-breasted Nuthatch.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Nanny. :-)

Merritt Island, FL(Zone 10a)

nanny...The black-headed bird is a ♂ Eastern Towhee. Yours have dark red eyes while our Southern version has nearly white eyes.

The two together might be a juvenile Chipping Sparrow(?) begging from an adult...they don't breed this far south so I've never seen a young one.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

thanks, angele, what an interesting site for ID info! (Whatbird.com)

I have been fiddling with it and trying different combos. So far no good match but I'll continue trying.

Thanks for the tip. t.

Thanks Old Ned! I thought that was a Towhee, but wasn't sure!

Hi Pelle;
I wished I had a better camera to zoom in the image. Do these Vultures hovering together in group? I first noticed one, then two then 3 of them circling the area.

Marlton, NJ

Yes they do. I usually have 2 or 3 gliding around.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you so much. Now I know what to look for.

Melbourne, FL

Turkey Vulture. Usually in groups. Sometimes Hawks will hang around with these guys.

Marlton, NJ

I had a Turkey Vulture break up some rough housing in the sky between 2 Red-tailed Hawks.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

How amusing Pelle!! LOL!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Imagine the Heroe was telling the 2 others; it's time to stop rough housing, but we need to go hunting guys! :-)

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I have at least 2 Wrens that are eating in the feeding cage. One is definitely a Carolina as the color is brown tones and the chest area has a golden tint. The other one is smaller and does not have the gold chest area but is grey instead. Is the smaller grey tinted one a female or juvie?

Here is the Carolina with the gold tint chest area ( sorry pics aren't clearer).

Here is the smaller one with the grey chest area! Is this a juvie or female Carolina Wren? Thanks so much,

This is a first for me...is it a Fox Sparrow?

Bewick's Wren - as well as the small size and grey breast colour, also note the relatively longer tail with stronger dark barring. Quite scarce in MO, good find!

Quoting:

Could be, but not definite - Fox Sparrow in MO should be redder, less dark brown, than this. Can you get more pics of the same bird from different angles?

Resin

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Boy, with that solid colored head, it sure looks like a fox sparrow to me!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thank you Resin...I was thinking Bewicks but couldn't believe it could be true! Wow...I'm pumped!

Here is another bad pic of the suspected Fox Sparrow along with a Dark Eyed Junco and American Goldfinch. You can see how much larger it is than the other two.

Thanks again, I really appreciate having you and this forum!!
