I've emailed them but I'm having problems with my email and not always getting it, they've answered one email but not the other,
thought i'd ask here to make sure before ordering next week.
Can a person order 4 hens of 7 or 8 varieties without being charged extra?
What's the minimum order? I plan on ordering around 40 or 50 chicks
I'm pretty sure I've decided to go with mcmurray, they had the best selection Although I could only get cockoo maran and a couple others in straight run so i've decided to get those at meyers so I do't get too many roosters. Cause I'm going to order one rooster of each variety that I order pullets in case I want to separate them down the road.
Also, does anybody know if they give refunds for dead birds or credits?
McMurray hatcheries
Ha I just found the page that shows some of these answers.
minimum is 25 but doesn't say 25 of each variety, can I buy 4 of each ?
says they process orders the day after payment is received, but allow 2 to 3 weeks delivery. What the heck does that mean? that it could take up to 3 weeks for them to ship them out ? So I really have no idea what day they'll come? I have to stay home during mail run time for 3 weeks? Jeese.
I'd ask them these questions but doesn't seem their answering. I wonder if they send you an email when they go out?
I'd be devistated if dead birds arrived. you know.
It will show in the prices
pullets or straight run
Pullets will cost more
You can order one of their assortments, all pullets
its a big surprize what you get
I got the rare and exotic assortment years ago
It was sooooo cool all the different kinds I got
I ended up with some polish in it and thats how I fell in love with them
Hey Crestedchik, I have a couple questions too if you dont mind.....
Out of the order of rare and exotics you got did any of them turn out to be roosters? I was just wondering how accurate they are about sexing the babys??
I have been dying to get chickens again, Its been years, But I always loved them.
I have never ordered them sexed before, I just got babys from the local feed store when my kids were little, Most of them were cocks!!
Im wanting to order them to get hens only for eggs, and probably pets, so Im trying to figure out which breed fits that bill the best.. Good size eggs, and gentle and (mostly) quiet since I do have neighbors (not too close) Do you have any suggestions?
Easy answer to your questions...call them. Their toll-free number is 1-800-456-3280. I found it on their home page at the bottom. I have gotten chicks from them, but only got one breed. I only had one chick die, and that one was almost dead when it arrived. They give you an extra chick or two with your order. They also give you a "rare breed" chick with that large an order. I got a aracauna rooster chick that I gave away because I was keeping two other roosters along with my RIR roo "Rocky".
Thank you for the information, that helps. I never thought to call and ask them.
Do you have a favorite breed? What do you use yours for? Eggs or meat? I just dont know if I would ever be able to kill one.
I'll call them today, thanks
I don't have a fave breed no. and we have killed our chickens before, raising them just for the freezer, Once. is all it took, no more LOL they live their lives out now till the foxes or coons get them.
I ended up with about 2 cocks out of the order, but one may have been the bonus chick
Gentilest (is that a word?LOL) breeds I got out of it were the polish ,cochin the dark Brahmas
One of the dark Brahmas was my favorite
she followed me around, talking, trying to get me to look at what she was trying to teach me...LOL
She lived 9 years too
I think most of my orders are coming out of the heavy breeds and exotic breeds, If i'm allowed to order 4 of each variety, I know the pullets and males are diff priced. It states that on the web site.
I'll call them and ask if there is extra charges for ordering some of each variety or if I have to order 25 of each variety.
kathy
I think the 2-3 week delivery is for other stuff from their site.
I emailed and asked if they would notify me when chicks
shipped, and after about 24 hours, I got a reply.
I requested delivery the week of the 11th, so when they
replied, they said my chicks would hatch AND ship on
the same day they hatch, the 9th, due to arrive about the 11th.
I have never ordered form them before, or chicks ever,
so I am hoping all goes well. I ordered 8 pullets and one
roo for each breed of 3 breeds. Polish, cuz they are funny
and lay white eggs, Cochin cuz they're fluffy and make
good moms and lay brown eggs, and Ameraucanas cuz
they're sweet and lay blue-green eggs. I was not charged
extra for my order, and I think it totalled 30 chicks.
Truest, I think your order total 27 chicks. I only ordered Austrolorps from them and as I say, I got a rare-breed also. The austrolorps were marked with black and the rare breed was pure yellow when I got them. Of course, the Austrolorps turned out all black except for Clyde who has gold hackle feathers. The rare breed turned out to be an pure white Aracauna roo. Mine were hatched on the 10th and I got them on the 11th. So, they were in transit one day. They were all healthy except for the one I stated above. McMurray says to give them sugar water for the first couple of days because of the trauma of travel. I did that and all of the girls (except for the one the hawk got) and the two boys I kept are in perfect health.
Thanks granny- I can't count :-) My chicks are hatching
on a Saturday, and I am way down here, so I am not
expecting them til the Monday after. You are lucky they
got to you so quick. And, I have ordered the Quik Chick
starting gel. It's a helper along with the sugar water.
Did the hawk get your pullet while she was small, or
after she was grown?
After she was about half-grown. It was our fault. We use scarecrows in the pen and I hadn't moved them for about 3 weeks. When I move them at least twice a week, we don't have any trouble with raptors.
You probably will get them on Monday after. They seem to be pretty good about sending them right out. But that seems about right. If they hatch on Saturday, they wouldn't get to you on Saturday, and no mail on Sunday, so Monday it is.
If I were to order again, I would probably use McMurray again. I plan on raising my own so I probably won't be buying again. (I hope)
Thanks Truest,
Was this this past february that you ordered? or this one coming up that your gonna order ?
I wonder if I should place my order now then to get them delivered on the 9th or 11th.
I placed my order earlier this month for delivery
in February.Early February deliveries may already
be booked, so you might want to call and ask the
earliest they have available.
Thanks Truest I appreciate the help
They don't charge extra for mixing the breeds. I ordered one of everything from them and it was just the price of the chick.
Thanks, I just placed my order today, It won't be delivered till the week of march l0th which is good for me. So feb. was taken up already. I went to meyer hatcheries to order the welsummer and cockoo marans but their web site isn't up and going yet.
What all did you order? Tell us what yur getting, please?
I want Marans. I think chocolate eggs would go well
with the brown and blue-green.
I'm not going to order the marans from mcmurray cause they only have straight run for the marans and from what I hear others say, straight run is mostly roosters.
I'm gonna get my marans from meyers
here's what I got
araucanas
columbian wyandottes
black australorops
silver laced wyandottes
light brahmas
partridge rocks
golden laced wyandottes
speckled sussex
and one rooster of each one of these in case I want to separate them for pure eggs for hatching later on
I'm going to get the welsummer and marans from meyers when they open their web site next week. I like the dark egg layers too, I had a brown leghorn but it was killed and it layed dark eggs too.
kathy
I also ordered a single cockerel of each of my 3
for the same reason. I guess that means 3 pens.
I hope, since there's only one of each, that I don't lose any
in shipping.
If you order straight run and want hens, you'll need to order more than one to increase your chances of getting a hen.
I meant that I ordered a ratio of 8 pullets to 1 cockerel
of each breed. I am hoping the one cockerel I order
is not on the casualty list, if I lose any.
it would have cost me a fortune to do that. LOL with as many diff varieties as I bought.
I can also find the welsummers and marans locally for 3.00 each guaranteed pullets no cockerels I'd wnat one of each but may go ahead and buy the pullets and forget the roosters locally.
Hey what kind of Marans? Any Black Copper Marans? I cant hardly find any close to Missouri.
No, I've not heard of black copper ones, these are just cockoo marans
Now i'll have to go look up those black copper marans
Have you searched the net for black copper marans? did you find any? eggs or chickens?
Yes I found them but when I contacted them they had a long waiting list or had none to sell so if any one who reads this knows were i can find some Black Copper Marans Please let me know! They are more common in the UK but I dont think they can be transported?
Patchouli78 Hey give a shout out to a fellow Missourian!!! Do you know of any Black Copper Marans locally I live only an hour and a half from Foly near Columbia?
Foley
Watch out for those speckled sussex. We had those once and the rooster was very protective of his brood and would attack you. Did it one too many times with the kids and my DH killed it. We always got barred rocks. They are heavy and might eat more feed, but in cold Iowa they are more likely to continue laying longer than some lighter weight breeds. And I loved the brown eggs. I haven't had any chickens for almost 10 years, but I have convinced my DH to let me get some this spring. I'm going with barred rocks and Araucana/Americana from Murry McMurry.
I've had plenty of barred rocks attack us too. I'll have to watch out for the sussex one aswell. thanks
Where is Judsonia, AR? My brother lives in northwestern Arkansas..
Judsonia is about 45 minutes north Of Little Rock, l5 minutes north of Searcy.
Hello Freeat30, I have but one cuckoo Maran. I wanted to get more of another color like splash or blue, but I'm not so sure about ordering them from people on the web. Speaking of Speckled Sussex, I have a hen who has a very nice personality. Oh, Freeat30, how do ya like all the snow? LOL!
can any one tell me is it bad to eat a fertile egg and why do people not want fertile eggs the stuff from the roos dont get in the egg when they mate sorry for such a stupid question. thank you for any answere.
No, it isn't bad to eat fertile eggs. Most people I know want farm eggs and most of those are fertile. Store-bought eggs are not fertile. But I only know one person who likes store-bought eggs over farm eggs.
Just placed an order to McMurray for:
6 standard aracana females
2 aracana males
11 cuckoo maran straight run
6 barred rock females
March 24th delivery.
I'm finally going to have chickens again.
Good for you, prettypeony, I got my Black Austrolorp chicks last spring from McMurray's. I got 25 pullets and 25 straight run. Ended up with 14 roosters in total. Not bad for 50 chicks. They are very healthy and nice chickens.
We ran a feedstore in SE Iowa for over 20 years and we ordered chicks for customers through McMurray. Got the cheap 25 rare breed cockerals several times just to see if we could identify them as they grew up. Our kids showed chickens (grand champion with our barred rocks and Golden Comets) in 4-H at the county fair, along with purebred Corriedale sheep. Back then we had several exotic pets for the fun of it: skunk (both black/white and silver, an artic fox, angora rabbit, Scottish Highlander cattle). I'm getting too old for all that now, but I did so enjoy them.
