Help please, These bugs are all over my Brugs

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

These are all over my Brugs. Can you tell me what they are and how I can get rid of them. They are in my house until spring. I read on another thread about Murphy's Oil Soap. Will that help?
I will show a few images.

MyRee I am not sure but they may be aphids. Someone will pop in soon . I had them and used so much stuff I hurt my plants. I finally used soap.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, I think that is what they are. I was thinking of using Bayer Rose Systemic fertilizer on my potted plants and spray the cuttings. I am just grabbing at straws here.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

MyRee I know the felling..I am a newbie to this so I learn each day. I would try Murphy's then wait for someone with experience in these matters.

Wow aphids on brugs ...never seen that in all my years growing brugs ...Be careful what you do on the leaves, I think if they were mine I would just get some plain soap and water and spray that on them.If you have a cold climate I would not use anything to stimulate growth yet.
I live in a warm place so perhaps someone else has some better advice.Good luck :)

I too have never seen aphids on brugs. I usually get them in spring on my new rose buds. Marie, I spray mine with Palmolive soap in water in a hand sprayer. I usually just have to spray them once. I have never sprayed my brugs with Palmolive, so try it on one first before you do it all if you decide to try my way.

If only on a few bushes, I also just take just my hose and spray water on them hard to knock them off. I usually have to do this twice or 3 times. If they cling, I use my fingers to dilodge them. Maybe you can take them into the shower either way.

I wouldn't use that systemic in my house. If it is Disulfoton (Di-Syston) , it is very strong stuff. Not good for humans.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Thanks, I just sprayed with the recipe again, put it right up to the leaves and sprayed it hard. Most came off with the spray. I also have been squishing some between my fingers, but I don't want to hurt the leaves.

You know, someone has to be the first for everything, I guess I am the one. So goes life.

I know I can get them off when I can spray them with the hose when they go outside. I don't think I can put them in the garage until around March. But that is only a month away. (Yea spring, hurry fast). Putting them in the tub would be difficult d/t the size of the pots, but if they, the aphids, don't go, that is where most are going.

Away I go to the store for some Palmolive Soap.

Thanks all,

Marie

Ya a mild dishsoap mixed with water in a spray bottle ought to do it! ;-)

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

I knew someone would come along!! When I got aphids I zapped em with so much they went naked!! I thought I had every pest known lol. I am much better now. :)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

My Gosh Kell.. I thought that's where I learned to spray Polmolive was from you! I'm loosing it.. LOL I used Polmolive on my brugs so much last year, I felt bad and rinsed them with clear water! LOL
I recently had a new brug come in with aphids... they spread so fast! Easy to control though.. I hit em with that Fruit & Nut tree spray.. I use it a lot..

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Joyce. Yes, I love Palmolive!! It doesn't kill you, LOL!!

I wonder why you guys are getting so many aphids on your brugs. I am trying to remember but pretty sure I have only ever gotten the dreaded mites. I sure wish Palmolive worked on them. LOL

Watertown, NY

Aphids, I hate those nasty buggers. I declared war on them a few weeks ago, I tried everything that I felt was safe to use in the house, dish soap, dish soap with added mustard(gives them horrible digestive problems, then they die), then added hot pepper oil. All worked for a few days then they where back. I bought a can of Raid house and garden, and I know, I should not be spraying in the house, but I was mad. I sprayed them all once, have not seen another aphid, it has been three weeks. I have so many brugs that I have them on three floors in my house, I was in fear they would get to every level, but caught them in time. I have been using Raid(blue can) for spider mites summer for years and it has always worked if caught early.

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

wow cool I have not seen an aphid on any of my brugs at all thank god!!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I use Bayer's Tree & Shrub (the 12 month stuff) and never have aphids or whiteflies. The aphids I had recently was from a new introduction.
I've used Polmolive for mites before I had Forbid.
Polmolive will also kill ants...which are usually an aphid's roommate. LOL

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

WOW, lots of information. I hope I don't have to resort to the Raid, but will start with Polmolive. I didn't look closely at them this morning before work, but will stop at the store to get supplies and hit them tonight. How much Polmolive to a quart of water? Mustard and hot pepper oil is on my list also.
Thanks all for your help.

I agree, soap and water should do the trick. If you only had a few you can spray them with a strong blast from the hose. Sometimes if I only have a few I just squish them lol. Aphids love brugs and around here they love daturas even more!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And here I complain about just having mites. I would die if I got aphids all over also.

So why are you guys calling it Polmolive and not Palmolive? I need to go find a bottle to check the spelling. Funny if I have been spelling it wrong all these years. You worry me if it kills ants too. I didn't know they had soft shells. Maybe it is not so innocent!! Though recently I used Blast, an orange based spray, on invading ants that were all over and they died on contact with it.

I use Bayer Tree and Bayer too Joyce for scale because it is so easy to use. No spraying which always get all over me!! It is great stuff!!

Marie, I never measure it but I give at least a tablespoon if not more to a 1 gallon hand sprayer. I add the water first so the soap does not stick on the plastic at the bottom. Then shake it all about. LOL. The aphids should be dead very fast. If not, you did not add enough. LOL

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Kell, you can see that I use the spelling on the reply just above my entry, you can see how easily I am swayed. I have never been known by my spelling, I have a dictionary by me when I chart. I have problems with small black ants in the summer, I will keep it in mind for them also. My Brug babies will be loving life when I get through with them.
I love all the comments,
Thanks, Marie

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

I've got aphids out the wazoo too. So far only on the brug I have in the garage that was out last summer. Not on any of the new cuttings that are inside. I've been spraying all kinds of stuff to no avail. Will try some dish soap next. Good Luck everyone.

You are right Kell, it is Palmolive. My bottle is sitting here on my work table.

I'm fighting these, I thought they were mealy bug! I found some dead lady bugs, they eat them... I've sprayed Neem 2X.. and HOPE they're under control, I'm spraying them one more time and then I'll try the palmolive. I've never had aphids in the winter, just mites.... It reminds me of rice... nasty buggers.

Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

I get aphids all the time in the winter in my breezeway..at 47 degrees it usually takes until late February to start getting them but this year I started my cuttings under lights and of course its a bit warmer there...the cuttings have a few aphids and Ive been hand killing the buggers...I think when it comes closer to spring I take the dish soap / water/ and a little veggie oil in a spray bottle..seems I heard the veggie oil keeps it on the leaf longer and smothers the aphid....Im getting good root systems to the cuttings this year compared to mushy ones after awhile...had to try something new since I didnt want to lose my dear cuttings this year...Judy

I have been battling Bugs on the Brugs for the past two weeks☻Then these little black spiders started showing up about three days ago. I was squishing them and then it occurred to me,spiders don't eat plants, they eat bugs. So I thought I would let the spiders have a go at the bugs and it worked. I'm not too thrilled to see webs and spiders on the Brugs, but they are keeping the bugs off the leaves and the Brugs are loving it.

In just three days, I have no bugs on the Brugs☺ Here is a pic of my new found friends and my wonderful Brugs doing well in the basement☺not one little ole hole on any leaf.

Thumbnail by posyblossom

My spiders are my mates ...organic gardening is allowing a few holes but winning the battle by not killing our natural defenders, my golden orb spiders kill everything from mozzies to stink bugs, trouble with spraying stuff on things is that it quite often kills the good guys.I think it is great that your spiders have cleaned up your babies for you.

Yea! I love the organic method. All too often I forget and try other remedies first and use organic methods as a last resort. I must try harder to remember to do it the other way around.

Yours and everyones Brugs are so awesome and exciting.Mine are new from DGers and sent to me last Nov. or there abouts. So I have never had a Brug Flower and I too am so excited at the possibilities☺I have 10 different kinds, looking good and will bury them pots and all as soon as there is word from folks that it is safe in zone 5b to put them outside in early summer.

I wish I could mail some of those little black spiders to MyRee so she could try them on her plants☺

Hello, just popped in after another long day of work. Over the last 7 days I have put in103 hours, I am bushed.
So now maybe my life can get back to normal. I have looked at my brugs every night, sprayed once with palmolive, many less aphids. I wish you could send me some spiders also. I have a few little white ones that have shown up and I let them do their job.
Spring is just around the corner but I have so much snow I wouldn't know it.
Waiting, Waiting...
I need to plant my brugs in pots I have 11 starts that are doing very well, getting little roots.
Posy, are you ever going to be in heaven.
This is so much fun.
Marie

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

Marie, I am already there even without my first bloom. I can only imagine how over the top I will be with even a ♥Brug Bud♥let alone a flower. My passion for the Tequila Sunrise that Deborah Cordeledawg gave me as a cutting is not to be believed. It's the one in the pic above with the spiders on it. It is growing in leaps and bounds in the basement and I am infatuated with every little node and leaf, bump and lump on it.

Lu,
It is a beautiful little brug, you must keep us informed on your progress. I love all the comments and pictures. Everyone on this forum is sweet, compasionate and many very knowledgeable for us newbies. I have 2 buds that are about 3" long, just watching.
I sprayed again this morning with palmolive. Took some pictures of the brugs snug in the house and the snow and icesicles and snow outside.
Spring, hurry please.

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

This is so much fun,and to find others that share the joy of it all, well it's just pure plant power☺☺☺come and get me Spring♂

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

My name is Bonnie, I'm addicted to Brugs. I'll spend hours fussing, oooing and ahing, reading about , and taking pics. I occasionally even PAY for brugs... I come here cause I know my fellow addicts know how I feel and for knowledge and to share my experiences. Non-plant people will never understand and ......that's okay. We have each other. It IS pure plant power, Lu! Too bad about those DH's with brug allergies.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

DIDO the statement above.
LOL Bonnie, I read it to my DH and we laughed and laughed. He said "who would that be with the allergies?" and gave me a little smile, then: "well I can't" referring to the smell of brugs in the garage. That is so so to bad, still no deterant for me. He did say I can take part of the garage next year and make a makeshift greenhouse out of it. We will see how that works.
I'm addicted, I know it, I love it!
I am glad others share my addiction. (Is that a bad thing? LOL)

(I think I may be winning over the aphids. YEA)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Lu, I had Tequila Sunrise year before last... wow are you in for a treat!!! I had to prop the branches up so they didn't fall to the ground from all the blooms! It also has a fantastic scent...
