-47c with windchill?
OMG, you guys need some hugs and some inspiration from the south! Keep Warm!
Is it really -32c in my hometown Calgary today?
Yep that is what the offical temp is at this moment (830am for me)!
Of course that is at the airport. It is slightly warmer (LOL) at my house - thermometer says -25 C! Dont think I will be walking the dogs today and probably wont even go out and shovel the sidewalk!
Supposed to be like this for about 3 days warming up to above -20 on Thursday!
brrrr, and I thought I was cold.
(going to nudge up the thermostat a few degrees)
And would you believe yesterday afternoon - probably not quite so cold - maybe only -20C - but with lots of wind - LOL- half a dozen gardeners braved the conditions for a little social get together and seed exchange at one of our members homes. 'Fooly Grown' is the name of the group - it sure applied yesterday but it sure was fun too!
-4 right now, over here. Supposed to go up to -3 this afternoon. Then blizzard warning for tonight plus drop in temp with windchill supposed to be -40 odd. Oh help. Time to take out compost/garbage and all the other daily outdoor things. In the winter am really happy I have no livestock to look after.
inanda aka Ginny
ugh, and it's probably moving this way...
It's terrible cold.
Oh my, I got so cold reading this thread I had to put on a fire for ya all!
I tell people down here, that it can get to -40 (back home) but they have no way of understanding how cold that really is, I have to say, I have blissfully forgotten myself :~) I will count down the days till spring for you.
fancyvan~"Fooly Grown" - that is too funny!! LOL sounds like a fun group!
Ginny~hope you have your woolly nickers on, for those outdoor chores.
Sending warm thoughts your way, Cath
(Down here, they call a toque or woollen hat a "toboggan"~I thought that was so funny) Guess they had no better use for the word toboggan?
Catherine thanks for the fire and the warm thoughts!
We are called 'Fooly Grown' because after some months of chatting on the CHS website we met at a 'Face to Face' gathering last April lst!
Here is what one of our members - who has a way with words - wrote about the group.

Hi, I'm a new member to DG, my name is Karen and I live just east of Toronto. We moved here last August from Montreal and I'm appreciating the warmer weather here. I thought it was cold in Montreal, but the -40's is something that I've never experienced. In Montreal it's gone down to -25 this winter with a windchill in the -30's. But here in Whitby we had a -20 once so far, most of the time it's hovering around 0. Winter seems alot more bearable! Karen
Hey everyone! Here in brantford it's supposed to go up to +6 tomorrow! Crazy weather, I wish it would stay constant.
Steven
Hey tanglee! Welcome to DG!
Steven - haven't seen you posting for a while; are you going to grow Morning Glories again this year?

yesterday was wicked with wind chills of -47 in edmonton and worse in the country. didn't even try to make it to the stables. went this morning with the van thermometer registering -40 the whole way, dense ice fog and just a slight wind (wind chill factor still minus 45 or so) looks like it will be this way all week (hope it kills a few of those nasty pine beetles - it has to be good for something)
Same here. Keeping the car plugged in - will see if it will start today ( I dont have a garage) Supposed to go to the Hort Society tomorrow morning to stuff newsletters - no sure if I will make it. Going out in a few minutes to clean up the yard and kick a ball around with the dogs for a few minutes - it is too cold to go for a walk. That assumes of course that they will come out. Yesterday Bailey would not go outside unless he really had to and Fancy who usually goes out at the drop of a hat went out when I shovelled the walks but was sitting on the back step wanting in when I came back!
cap was like your two but the 'little guy' Czar (who is now not quite 10 months and 92 pounds would play in this stuff forever if i could last
Wow, you Albertans are sure getting a winter blast. Yikes. Perhaps if you stared long enough at Gardnerkett's lovely palm tree picture and daydreamed a bit - that would warm you up! :-)
Sandy
Welcome Tanglee..I work in Toronto, live in Victoria Harbour, so quite a drive on that 400n...from home I would say you are about 1 1/2 hrs. from me taking the good old Hwy 12...weather will soon warm up and we'll be complaining of the heat ... or will we...lol
Well, at least we aren't cold like the Prairies. DD just phoned and it is -48 in Lloydminster, Alberta. She has a job interview there today, but was smart and took the bus from Edmonton. Just too darn cold to be out on the road by yourself.
Still cool here, but must have warmed up some as it rained overnight, and is raining a bit right now. They were calling for snow but I guess we lucked out, although not sure how the north island is. Some parts of Victoria got quite a bit of snow on Sunday.
Keep warm everyone.
Oops! Quick weather change. Clouds and rain are gone, sun is shining!!!
Hi Joanne, I hope to grow some morning glories again this year, but I'm actualy going to be moving in the spring so I'm not sure if I'll have any gardens or much of anything like that for the first while :( Although.................if I have my way there will be lots of gardening going on!
Wishing you Calgarians a Chinook real soon.
Ann
joannabanana~that poor little bear looks so cold!
tanglee~welcome! glad you are keeping warm.
ggd~is that -48 before windchill!! OMG :-o
Poor little poochies, must be tough on them when it gets that cold, do you have outdoor gear for them, like booties?
Here is a little goldfinch puffed up trying to keep warm down here, it was about 8 cel or around 48 f.
keep warm!!
Yes, the -48 was no windchill. It is very cold there today, and not any wind blowing.
ggd

Down here, in July/August we get typical temps of 95-100 degrees above F, with 90-98 percent humidity.
The locals really suffer and complain.
(I love it, probably from having lived so many years through those cold winters back in Calgary!!)
When it gets that hot here, very few people go out and if they do, they leave their cars running continually so the A/C keeps them cool. From one climate extreme to another!
Betty,
Sorry crossed posts with you, freezing rain - thats the worst! Sounds just awful!:-((
Cath
Don't know what's worse Cath, having the air on in car/home/malls etc. or having the heat..guess both about the same..so think I'll pick yours...any room down there????
Thanks for the welcome! I hadn't heard of Victoria Harbour, Bettypauze. But then I hadn't heard of alot of places around Toronto before we moved here, just the bigger places. I've been to Orillia once and have a cousin in Georgetown.
Yes, doesn't the weather forecast sound delightful. Glad I don't have to go out tomorrow. My husband works in Markham so he might be in for a fun drive. Hopefully the worst will miss Whitby, I've been told it's kind of in a pocket so gets some sort of protection alot of the time from the nastier weather. We had +7 here today, wish it could have stayed. Karen
Karen, weather hasn't missed us..right now the winds are so strong it would blow you over...temps are falling quickly..we usually leave for Toronto about 7am..I work for BIL and travel with my other SIL and the odd time with 2 nieces..anyway Suzanne just called and thought we'd better wait until 8 or so before leaving..giving the roads time to freeze and hopefully be sanded..so get an extra hour here at home..am packing a suitcase though so that if weather gets worse I'll get hotel room for the night...
We were hit by a tranport truck just north of Toronto in Nov. so we are a bit more cautious on bad days...
I'm about 1/2 hr. north of Orillia..God's country for sure..
Let's hope you miss this lovely weather, but if it comes, stay safe!
+ 7 in Whitby, Amazing, hrrible weather around Barrie and North. Won't even say too much about weather here today..... and supposed to be colder (meaning worse) tonight.
One of the pubs here has set up an ice bar on their patio. Went past and had a shuftie last week, very different but not for me. No buffalo robes. My cool room is just on freezing this AM. Luckily put all my bulbs etc in the fridge yesterday so they were saved.
Last week really neat weather-wise so went skating on the river. Was so tired that when I climbed out at the end of our street, had to go to a house and ask them to call a cab. Too tired to walk the 7 or 8 blocks home. Joys of not exercising properly in the winter. Fire engines were frozen in on the street yesterday where they were fighting a fire. Not a good winter job to have.
inanda aka Ginny
Picture of palm trees don't do it for me during this !@#$%#$!!!! weather but garden gatherings do-- thanks to Joanne! Carol I think a trip to Balzac garden center will help too!
Theresa
What kind of garden gathering did you have, Theresa?
Sandy
Quote from Gardnerkett
"Here is a little goldfinch puffed up trying to keep warm down here, it was about 8 cel or around 48 f."
What have you got in your feeder Gardenerkett? Looks like sunflower seed and ?
Sandy Fooly Grown had a little gathering at Joanne's( Grow_Jo) last Sunday afternoon just as the storm was hitting the city! Wine, cheese, fruit and good company, seed sharing and garden talk. It was a great way to spend a cold stormy afternoon!
DD got back to Edmonton from her job interview in Lloydminster. She let a friend(MALE!) have her car while she was gone. He sent her an e-mail the day after she left to say the car wouldn't start. So after a few e-mails back and forth, well, he hadn't PLUGGED THE CAR IN!!!! And he parked the car down the street in front of neighbours, so she can't even plug it in. It's dead as a doorknob. So even the second night he didn't do anything with it. He cranked the battery right down. So she can't get it towed to the dealership till tomorrow, and is looking into a rental car for a day. That might be a problem too because so many people are having car trouble with the cold.
DH and I are wondering:
A. which turnip truck did this guy fall off??
B. He's not from the Prairies!!!
That's my rant of the day. Thanks for listening.
Betty~YOU WERE HIT BY A TRANSPORT TRUCK, OMG hope everything is OK!! Ya all are welcome to come visit here anytime!-Especially Canadians, (I really do miss them) and the Globe and Mail.
violist~I'm sorry for the palm tree:~((, is a pansy from today in Louisanna better? Just little offerings from the south to my cold friends in the north.
dahilianut~I was going to say rum balls, (in the feeder) but not everyone enjoys my humour..., I actually had to go back and look at the photo. I thinks its just other bird droppings on the outside!! :~o
fancy~wine, cheese and gardners, sounds like a great combination to me!
Remember Spring is just around the corner!
ggd~(B) hope he was at least a cute guy? If not the sharpest tool in the shed! Sounds like he owes her BIG TIME!
Gardner: I have no idea as I have never heard her talk about him before!! I will be asking some questions! : - )
