Great job Eleanor!!

Thanks for starting the new thread!

grammyphoeb--thanks for starting the new thread--and busy day at your feeders!

I'm curious about the IDs for your visiting birdies in the pic...? t.

Marlton, NJ

I see some Redpolls in the pic. Maybe some female Purple Finch??

Oh too have my younger eyes back,sigh...

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Common Redpolls, maybe a Pine Siskin or two but not definite.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone! There were all Common Redpolls and Goldfinches at that time, I think. I don't think there were any Purple Finches cause all of them had the black spot on the chin. I took the pic through a window so it was not as clear as I would like. Enjoyed looking at your pics debnes! Eleanor

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

My camera did not show the color of the goldfinches very well. They look more gray than olive!! Eleanor

I'm trying to find the pic that showed the Commom Redpoll sitting on the perch on the pole but it is so hard to see what is in the thumbnail. Hope I guessed right. If I did you can see the black spot on the chin. Eleanor

All I see in these last 2 are Goldfinch.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Ooopps, I guessed wrong!! That is a Goldfinch sitting on the perch. I'll try again! This one should have the Redpoll on the perch. Eleanor

We cross posted pelletory and you are right!! I went to my photo program so I could actually see the pic before I posted again!! Eleanor

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Thank you. I am still trying to ID a redpoll at my feeders--can't tell the difference between them and the finches--so your photo helped. Thanks.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I had trouble IDing them too. I spent a lot of time with my book and binoculars and checking everything. The deciding factor was the black spot on the chin!! My pic (the last one) didn't show it too well but it was there. Before I posted it I tried to brighten the photo so it would show up more. I had a bird in the front of my house in my hemlocks that i could not ID - wished i could have gotten a pic of it. He's been singing for several days now - might be some kind of sparrow! Eleanor

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Deb and Eleanor...very nice pics of your feeders! I have never seen a Kinglet or a Redpoll...maybe someday!

I am so glad that you post your pics here as it gives me a chance to see what I may discover one day in my yard or fields!

Marlton, NJ

I bought a new suet feeder the other day while at my favorite wild bird store and still being in shock that they were going to close.

This is a very large suet feeder with the tail prop and enough room for 2 cakes.

pelletory - nice suet feeder. That's big enough for a pileated woodpecker, isn't it? Do they come to your feeders? We have some in our area but I haven't seen them in a while. A few years ago we had two that were visible a lot and one of them was pecking at a stump about 10 feet away from the house. We were outside and were able to get within 6 feet of it before it flew away. What a sight! We were awed by the size of him (or her) and his red Woody Woodpecker red crest. Eleanor

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Just saw this on my feeder and took an awful pic of it through the window. I think it is some kind of wren because of the coloring and the shape of the bill. Can anyone see it well enough to ID it? Eleanor

Hi, Its a Carolina Wren.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks pelletory! I thought maybe that was the ID, but they aren't supposed to winter this far north unless it's a mild winter!! I didn't think it was a mild winter here - at least it's kept me in hibernation! Eleanor

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Those are nice suet feeders Pelle...I'll bet the woodpeckers love you!

Eleanor..I love those Carolina Wrens..they are so cute but quick!

The wind is blowing like crazy today and the platform feeders have had all the birdseed blown off of them...what a mess!

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

Rose, winds are high here, too! 30-40mph sustained winds with 50-60mph gusts! I hope we don't blow away!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

We have freezing rain! it's supposed to be just rain but our temp is just not going up very fast - only 23 - up from 6 this morning. No winds at the moment - are they heading this way? I almost forgot to mention that I saw an owl yesterday morning sitting on cable wires. As I was aproaching in the car it turned to look my way and I could see white rings around it's eyes. I was driving in rural area near my home and I wished I had pulled off the road to get a better look at the coloring. The rest of it appeared to be gray or brown. I've only seen an owl one other time so it was a treat to see one in the day light hours. I can't ID it by looking back through my field guide cause nothing looks exactly like I remember. Very well could be my memory!! eleanor

OK, (I'm so excited) I spent yesterday afternoon on the chase for one of these heated blue 'pet bowls' that dell rose had so much success with attracting her blue birds-- set it up with my old fountain 'bubbler' and some bricks and twigs per dellrose's.

(If you haven't seen her "Fun at the Watering Hole" thread, be sure to check it out--the blue bird photos are so fun and cute! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/806239/ )

Finally found the heated pet bowl at Walmart for $19.99 (not as cute as dellrose's but the only place that had any!)

So here's a photo of my poor imitation of dellrose's set up! I'm hoping for some BB visitors, but so far (one hour) none have visited!

Am working on getting my new Blue Bird houses set up, too....

Pelle, so sorry to hear your wild bird store is closing...maybe you can buy them out and sell the inventory here through Dave's Classifieds? I'm sure we'd all help you!

That's all for today--just thought I'd share! (-:

Hi grammy, The suet feeder would definitely be big enough for a
Pileated Woodpecker. :-)

LOL, it holds 4-6 Starlings.

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Nice suet feeder Pelle. I'm going to show the pic to DH the woodworker!! Sorry to hear your favorite store is closing. Bummer...

Those heated bowls are so tempting. I'll have to check Tractor Supply next time I'm there for BOSS (which will be very soon.)

Here's a very cold ruby-crowned kinglet from 1/25.

Loved everyone's pics - they are great!! Eleanor

The cage I rigged up to hold meal worms and homemade suet has worked great for keeping out the larger birds. Here is a pic of a Downy woodpecker eating the suet. He visits several times a day.
