Blooming in January

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

about core's no see um aueston... no there arent any in columbia... just too inland i guess. personally i find the carolina jessamine fragrance best... i guess because it has a more light and sweet... more delicate smell i think. the confederate jasmine, it too much up too close can be overpowering and unpleasant... thier scent doesn't smell as uniquely... like the almost elegant scent of the jasmine... just my humble opinion

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My sand gnats are about 100' inland. LOL

well ladies i was talking to my son he is in georgia in the army... he said he annoyed some fire ants and then was standing in formation, did not know they were on his pants and started biting him on the leg... thats what he gets huh? he doesnt know about them being from michigan. he was describing there "mounds" he said they are all over the base. they rise about an inch or two above the grass. pretty amazing he said. but hopefully he will leave them alone now. and he know about no see ems also. he had run ins with them in fort knox. well i just thought it was wierd he mentioned them after i read all about them on line thanks for the info. have a great weekend. Diehrd: Does the Car. jessamine smell kinda like vanilla? If so, then that's what I get for saying I couldn't smell mine. I was outside this afternoon and I caught a lovely scent. There's nothing else blooming anywhere near. So perhaps the reason I thought mine had no scent was it just has more blooms this year...or somethin'.

Ronna: - Those fireants at your son's base must be underachievers! ...or else they get run down by lawnmowers regularly, because the I've had mounds 8" high spring up in my yard. :) I've seen higher ones in the woods. I hope he didn't have too bad a time with the ant stings.

well really all he said was, that they really stung when they were bitting and still itching later on in the evening... thats what he gets for toying with the little guys huh???? he has been that way his whole life :) well you know he is a man... Ronna

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hmmm... not really.... its a light scent. it smells pure....like if the scent was coming from a liquid in a bowl, it would be a transparent liquid, whereas the vanilla would be coming from a milky liquid... that was really weird and a terrible example, but the only way i can describe it.....i guess it all subjuect to one's opinion..... y'all must be thinking i smoking something cuz of that analogy, but i'm perfectly sober... i swear we may be smelling the same thing, and just be percieving it differently

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Actually it makes perfect sense to me. :) I'll go stand under the arbor again in the morning and see if I still smell it. I'll let ya know if it's clear or milky. ;->

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

:-) glad to hear that i'm not going psyco (or at least that i'm not the only psyco one here)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Diehard you ever smell unsweeten vanilla becuase now that she said that I think the smell is dead on vanilla. I only have one flower blooming right now so when the blooms get going I'll do a distance smelling and see how far away I can smell them.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hmmm, a rather cerebral analogy. Mine are just breaking bud, I can't wait for morning so I can go and sniff.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i just went to smell some... well i don't really think it smells at all like vanilla, but that's just me. it could have something to do with the way the brain interprets the smell... now i really am starting to think i am insane!

I'm sure glad some of you have something green, much less blooming!!I've got nothing at all blooming and just my snow in summer is still green. Geeze,I can't wait for spring to get here.I truly hate winter.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

im right there with you guys... im sick of winter also. but my dog he loves it. im missing all my flowers i look at my photo albums and at the photos you all have posted for me it makes me miss ours all the more it sure has been fun reading all of this. i wish i could smell the flowers you are talking about can any one capsure some of the scent and send it to me in an enveope??? maybe i could tell you what it smelled like... hahaha. just got back from walking max. its really hard to walk thru the slushy snow. its a little bit warmer today so the snow is thicker. kinda hard to make a nice walk but i love watching the dog run and play in it. he burys his head right down in it and sniffs, maybe he is trying to smell the flowers in N>C.!!!! all you see is his body and nothing else... its really funny :) well enough of the boring snow talk!!!! soon enogh i can see all my flowering favs of daffiodils...crocus and hyacinths:) have a great sunday, Ronna

It was just beautiful here today.I got out my pruners and cut my hakuro nishiki willow way back.I didn't get it pruned last winter and it didn't have as much pretty color on its leaves last spring. Then I pruned a huge rosemary bush and some dead flower stalks. One bed down, but so many left to do before spring gets here.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

sounds like so much fun... i love working in the yard it is theraputic!!! you can work out all frustrations and worries. the flowers like it when you talk to them. Ronna

Millers Creek, NC

LOl Ronna, they would not have liked what I had to say to them today!!I threatened to replace them with silks!!

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

aw dont be so hard on them lol!!!! but i do know what you mean... you find the plant youve always wanted and it does absolutly nothing or you have to move it cause its in the wrong place... ever happen to you? me ? always. i have to much shade and am always trying something that needs more sun and believe me when it says sun it means sun!!!! Ronna

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, well come on down Miss Ronna; we have to plant many sun plants in the shade or they will burn up.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

all right i have my bags packed!!!!!!

Millers Creek, NC

LOL,I was just fussing at my plants because I want them to hurry up and turn green again. But yes,I know its not time yet, sigh

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Ardesia: So true. I learned that the hard way. I've cooked several "full sun" plants.

Hang in there guys, spring's coming (early, according to Gen. Beauregard).

I went back out there under the arbor today and it was definitely the jessamine and it still smells vanila-ish to me. Not heavy though, ..very light. I'm so happy. :)

Not to worry, Diehrd, its all in your mind. ;->

It was almost 70 here yesterday and glorious. I have my first daffodils of the season and weather like this just gives hope for the future. I spent 3 days pulling weeds, cutting back roses and being bitten by fire ants. Hey, everything is marvelous except for the ants. It just never gets cold enough here to kill them off. But you sure can not beat the weather.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

The pollen is out too, it MUST be spring!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

... just wait until the pines start!!! ugh

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

That is where the pollen is coming from, it's here now. Yellow and sticky.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

oh... i saw the maples with theri red fuzzy things and assumed it was them.... last spring whenever the wind blew, there was a yellow cloud... only visible against a dark background, that wouyld come off the pines in the back yard

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Nope, the pine pollen has started. I think Pine is the first of the season then Oaks aren't far behind. Think the Oaks give people the most problems. Smaller pollen.
