Hi - I'm thinking about growing smallish, bushy trees in large pots on my back deck for visual screening. Seems like Japanese maples would look good, but I'm not sure how happy they'll be. Do specific varieties do better in pots than others? How long can they live in a pot? I'm in zone 7a.

Especially some of the smaller ones I think you can keep them in pots as long as you want. How sunny is the area you're going to be putting them in? If the area is full sun or you're going to have hot afternoon sun beating down on them then they may not do as well.
There is a JM forum where some very knowledgeable folk can and will give you all of the info you need.
Thanks, ecrane and peony1! I'll look for smaller varieties. They'll sit on a north-facing back deck, so hot afternoon sun won't be a problem. I think they'll add a really nice, soft feel.
