Something is awakening

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

The Witch hazel (Hamamelis sp) in front is beginning to perk up, at least a couple branches are. Since it is 'warming up' to about 35° now I hope to see more action in the garden. Not holding my breath though. Well there is a little Pansy that is open, but precious little elsewhere.

Balvenie, I like your red Hamamelis a lot. my yellow one is blooming. also I have 2 clumps of hardy Cyclamen blooming. the Hellebores are getting close to bloom. what Hamamelis is the one in the pic? I would like to order that one, Jim

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I didn't know Hamamelis came in red-that's stunning!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

It has been in for several years and the tag has deteriorated so I can't say what variety it is for sure, but it might be jelena. The nursery it came from is now 13 bare lots waiting for 13 crummy little shacks. They call it progress.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

I may have to do a drive by just to see that...if the weather warms a little in the next few days.
Great photography too! Thanks for getting our spring hopes up!
Carla

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I love Hamamelis. Thanks for the picture, balvenie. I really need to see signs of spring after all this frost and talk of continued cold weather.

Might just have to have that guy. I think that Katye and I saw one similar (or was it more orange, Kate?) at Flowerworld a couple of weeks ago when we were walking through. The red is stunning and makes a nice contrast.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Here's another nice picture of jelena, although it doesn't capture the contrast of your picture, balvenie:

This year I went a little crazy on hamamelis I have:
hamamelis arnolds promise, primavera, pallida, carmine red, lombards weeping, moonlight, purpurea, sunburst and winter beauty,. I will try this weekend to get my new plants on my website. Too pretty Heidi and Dragonfly

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Oooooooh, Heidi. I'd love to see that.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I work dark to dark, so I'm thinking there might be a sweet surprise out in the orchard by the name of H. pallida. Check on Saturday & see if there is room for another.
They're great in the fall - butterscotch coloured leaves!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Kate, doesn't it make the weekends that much more exciting? Never know what you've been missing until Saturday. LOL

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Forest Farm has Jelena 1gal. on the short list for $29, I just ordered it. I didn't want it to get by me. Balvenie, thanks for posting the pic. Heidi, I'll be up when you open. to look at the ones you have in stock. I'm trying to collect more winter bloomers, I feel like I'm getting a jump on spring, I have 2 Cyclamen that have been blooming for several weeks. plus the Hamamelis. Jim

Jim - thanks for the note. I think I might have to splurge on either that or Diana this weekend. It's just to beautiful. Balvenie, I'm blaming it on you . . .

Kingston, WA

Hi Jim I had jelena ordered and it sold out. I think it is a good one. We need all the help we can get this time of the year. Heidi

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Jim

I don't know the names of mine, they were given to me, but I will look into those, my woodland area looks soooo dead now want to get more something for this time of year may have to move some plants around, I don't think my hellebore likes where I put it I have seen no sight of blooms on it. maybe back to planing table.
Thanks
Tills

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Tilly, the Cyclamen that I have with blooms is the Coum rose. the other is a Coum is pink. funny the Heronswood markers are still in the ground with them but I couldn't pull them out, because the ground is frozen. I'll give you the names of the rest when the ground thaws. I think I have about 5 varieties that I bought over the years at H. Heidi are you carrying the hardy Cyclamen? Jim

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Aha! My H. Pallida is in full bloom & fragrant to about 15'.
Also - Viburnum bodnantense, more Sarcococca blossoms & Daphnes that are ready to rock, but we won't be smelling them for a spell. Supposed to get snow over the next 2 - 4 days.
oh...yippee...

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Tilly, the varieties are both the Coum, which blooms in winter, then the Hederifolium which blooms in late summer early fall. and I have some with silver leaves. I think some of them do bloom in the spring as a bonus but I don't remember which. I'll have to write it down this spring summer. when I checked the Coum this morning the leaves and flowers were all curled up and when it warmed up a bit they look okay. they are tough little critters. Jim

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Katye, I'll have to give Heidi a call on the H. Pallida. it looks like a nice one. I going to give the winter bloomers more thought this year. it seems that by the time I start hitting the nurseries, they are done blooming. and I forget about it. but I do have several Hellebores. 2 Daphne. Hamameles, and the Cyclamen. I don't have the viburnum or Sarcoccoca. I'll check those out. lol, Jim

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Jim - I highly recommend the viburnum and sarcoccoca.

Katye - I NEED to come see your Hamamelis. LOL Are you going to be around tomorrow?

Kingston, WA

Hi Jim Yes I do have cyclamen coum and heterafolium. Winter blooming plants are great but don't forget the pussy willows. I have the black one which is comming out and a huge grey one. I remember as a kid loving pussy willows. Also I love some of the bright red twig dogwoods. I think the one in the lower garden is brillantisma. I alsolove the leocothoe with their bright red and green leaves. I also have a lonicera purpurea from heronswood which is blooming now and has been for a while it get to probably 10' tall and has lemonly scented flowers. very cool. If the weather stays nice I might open a week earlier than normal. Heidi

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Jim this is the one I have, I also have a baby white one. Is it the silver?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Thank you for you Hamamelis balvenie. As I sit up here in Juneau in blizzard conditions, you make me excited for my arrival back to Montana to see my witch hazel soon to bring life to my garden.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Soferdig
In a blizzard, I can't imagine how that would be, I have been Thu bad ice storm and a few sand storms ( in Mojave desert) I just bet you would love to be home.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

The storm blew through and the morning is alive with sun. The drifts are everywhere and the trees still have some snow on them. Very beautiful. I will try to get some pictures.

Great picture Heidi!

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I love the bright yellow on that hazel!

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Heidi, I have a lot of the Salix. but the Leocothoe, sounds interesting, I have several of the Cyclamen but like planting them everywhere, like the Epimedium. I've been collecting ferns, last year it was Pyrrosia, and terrestrial Orchids, calanthe, blettila striata. when are you going to open? looking forward to the 08 season, Jim

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Well, I've now got the cutest little cyclamen coum, thanks to all of you! It's got mostly silvery green leaves and these adorable tiny little flowers. I've had a couple of the "hardy cyclamen"(From Fred Meyer, I think-they were a gift) that have been blooming for a while, but this one is different. I really like it.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

My brother used the dward leucothoe in his garden in front. I really like the way it fits in. It wasn't Scarletta, although that's one of them.

I'm trying to figure out where I can use it. I love anything in dwarf form . . .

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I just love these little guys. I have several, but they haven't filled out yet. They are pretty tough in the right spot(s). Think I need some more . . .

Kingston, WA

I just put in a order to asiatica check out their website. Very cool and very expensive but I ordered anyways. I got 4 kindsof arisaemas a cremastra unguiculata which is a cool spotted hardy orchis, aralia sun king very cool ainsliaea cordifoilia , asarum takaoi ginba which is cool silver leafed it almost looks like the silver leafed cyclamens, glaucidium plamatum. Very cool big purple dogwood looking flowers mukdenia rossii karasuba. very cool woodland perinnial evergreen great foliage
diplazium tomitaroanum a very very cool fern neolepisorus ovatus variegatus a even cool fern I need to check out keeping it green nursery I heard he has a ton of arisaemas and cypripediums plus he has a cattle dog. He is in stanwood

Oh, very nice witch hazel, Balvenie! I do love that color! I have a couple of them, but I like that color a lot! Here's one of mine. They are such slow growers. The next one I get will be a little larger.

Is that this year, Pix?

Granted, mine is probably in too much shade, but it isn't that far along yet.

yes, just took the photo yesterday. It gets some sun when the sun is out.

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Okay one question, how slow is the Witch Hazel? Do they come in dwarf? I love them but my DH hates for trees to be planted to block the veiw/sun. I was lucky to get to plant the 2 apple trees and the Red Tip Photinia shrub that I planted turned into a tree (LOL) he wondered how that tree got there. I did not tell him I trimmed it to be a tree instead of a hedge....
I would love some more hedges that I could slowly trim into a tree...sooo sneaky. I am slowly getting rid of the grass too! I have him leaning towards putting a small deck in front of the greenhouse with a picket fence surround...once we have that fence up.....you have to have flowers/plants around it...Muwah ha ha.....
