Mitch:
Spanish wasn't required here, although with most of my population; that was their native language. I could understand requiring the US Pledge--but I had to make a poster of the Texas pledge (and you know they changed a few words of it over the summer) and all of us stumbled over it all the time--but I had 14 year olds--when no one can remember it, and when we finally all learn it, they change it. Sort of lost its purpose then.

I have K so they are just learning what ever we do - so no big deal for them I just dont get the state pledge myself for kids to say each day.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Welcome right? Or Hello - I cannot remember...

I do know that Tejas in Spanish (the way they say Texas in Spanish) is the word for roof tile. Adding - Mexican Spanish I am not sure about any others!

Tejas is an Indian word for friendship.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

friendship - now I knew it was close..

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

The name Texas is a Spanish name, which comes from an Indian word meaning "friends" or "allies."

wow! I am hot today!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

mmmm Jo is hot yet I read else where it was cold???? LOL

Now if all of this just stays around I will be able to find the links y'all posted to go and read everything and someday it might stick in my head LOL Thanks for the Texas education

Back in Illinois...last I knew there was no pledge of any kind and no prayers either which I think it very sad and I feel it makes some what of a difference when it comes to the way kids think and act
wonder could these things make a difference in respect and responsibility in kids now a days if taught them and practiced every day in school?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Here is a site showing the Tejas word for the roof tiles - http://espanol.geocities.com/fotosmoramon/tejas/index.html this one to - http://www.geocities.com/techospsdb/

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Have y'all ever heard Shake's song Traveling Texas? It was written for the sesquicentennial and became the theme song of a local Texas show in Houston. Very pretty song. I thought of it because he sings about how Texas means "friend."

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I never heard that song, I bet it is neat.

Josephine,

so what did you think about my seedlings? .......did they look ok to you? .......or were they kind of spindley?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I think they look pretty good, but a little more light wouldn't hurt.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

so how much light should they be getting?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am sorry I couldn't find what you said you had, but a fluorescent bulb two or three inches away from them should be o.k.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

It needs to be that close to them? ........if that is the case then I am not providing enough light for them I do not think ......... I have a lamp about 10 inches above them with 100 watt bulb in it ......

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

James, here is an article about growing seedlings indoors, it will tell you all about it better than I can.

You need loads of light in doors.... my first few years of seeds looked very poor until I heard about the lighting and how best to do it.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

If the plants can be near a window where they could get sunlight some of the time, I think the combination of the two kinds of light is good. Unless, of course, the sunlight is too bright.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

where the plants are they have a big window right next to them ........of course the sun hasn't shone in a few days now .......... and also the window faces the north so not bright sunlight even when the sun is shining.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

well ......... I don't have enough light ......... :o( ........... soooooooo I guess that I am off to a half arsed job of growing my first flowers from seeds :o( .......... I guess that I should probably start over ........ there is plenty of time left .........

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

What? Start OVer? Why not give 'em some lighting? You are already ahead of me! LOL

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

I am thinking the very same thing......... but .........if they start out too spendley will they overcome this condition is what I am wondering?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I think you will be able to slow down the growth by giving them a close up light. They are simply reaching tall looking for light. They will fill out as they slowly grow. Don't ever give up! 8 )

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

I agree don't give up I have broccoli already sprouting and I have to get my lights this weekend and set them up (payday is friday)..I just keep turning them so they change the direction of leaning LOL

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

so y'all have helped me make up my mind.......... I am going to keep going with what I have .......... I am thinking that ........... because I oversowed and still have less spendley seedlings coming up .......... I can go ahead and thin out the spendley ones and leave the newest ones !!

sounds like a plan to me .......... thanks for the input.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

James - my first year of seedlings looked like that when I planted them out in the garden - and they still made it just slower. Dont give up you are doing great.

Marble Falls, TX(Zone 8a)

thanks y'all .......... :o)
