What can be interplanted with potatoes?

It is with great sadness that I let you know that Big_Red is no longer with us. Please visit the memory garden. He passed away suddenly, according to the article...

You can also put your thoughts in the memory garden forum. It is a place his family, too, can go to read everyones words and wishes.

Gosh, I couldn't think of the right words to post. There is such an empty feeling inside when we lose someone. He will be missed so much.

I agree. Even when I went over to the recipe forum this morning. There was a post, just from January. He was showing off his bread.

How's everyones potatoes doing? The only thing that survived (companions) are some cilantro and a couple of beans.. so I planted more beans around the potato plants.. here are mine and I got a couple more plants in another raised bed.

I got these wire trellis looking things that are originally for water hoses, but they were on sale during the winter for a couple of dollars each, so they went in here for the beans to climb.. I guess I should remove those facet things. Then I put some concrete leaf and round stepping stones so that I can go in there if I have to

Thank you Sequee! my first potato patch!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

And hardly a patch!!!

It's so nice to finally be outside working on the gardens. I had some help over today and we everything finished up and ready for planting. Now if only the weather will cooperate!

I found a neat link on potato growing... http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_november_1_potato.asp

I think i may dig one up to see what is going on down there..

First, so very sorry about Big_Red.

gardenglory, I ordered two of those bags and planted them with seed potatoes about 3 weeks ago -- VERY late for my zone, but what the heck. I haven't seen anything yet, but I will report it when it happens.

Here goes... I pulled these out a few minutes ago.. some are the size of a lemon and the tiny ones are the size of small limes. The skin on them is so soft, it peeled off as I washed them. I am thinking what I could make with them, this is so exciting. These are from the potato seeds from Lowes, I have no idea what they were.. They went in sometime in January, a few days before my post I think.

Congrats, Gourd! I'm jealous! :)

Thanks Jill, when did yours go in?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Mmmmm - a nice warm, potato salade, with crunchy celery and hardboiled eggs...I can taste it already!!!

Mine started going in around the end of February, I think, Gourd. There were two plantings, I think, but nothing started showing above the hay (I'm using doccat5's method) for about 6 weeks. Still only have 3 plants, out of the I think 8 seed taters I set out.

I'm very glad this was an experiment, and not a crop I needed to rely on! :)

Gourd, your potatoes look WONDERFUL!!! Wow. I'm impressed.

I planted mine very late, just about a month ago if I remember correctly. This morning I saw my first sprout (I planted them pretty deep as it gets so hot here) and we shall see. I'm using those bags Park's sells, and the variety of seed potatoes they sell as well. I suspect I put them in too late, but I may get enough to use as seed come fall, which would be fine. I'll take what I can get!
