Thank ya'll very much for the welcome. I figured, after being here so long, I should get to know ya'll better.
Bubba - we'll be there soon. It's always on y mind but it just seems like something is going on every single Friday these days. If not Circle S and a Friday, we should definitely find time.
Isn't it a glorious day to live in Texas?
Hi Bubba,
I was just thinking about that...I don't get off until 9:30pm, which makes it kind of hard...I wanted to go to the dinner too..but...my work hours prevent. that...
Kritsi, did you see me wave at you a couple weeks ago on my way to Rosenberg to Caldwells Nursery! LOL!! We went through Sugarland...
I saw you, Randy! I was honking my horn at you. Didn't you hear it? LOL.
Isn't Caldwell's great? You should have stopped by!
Sorry 'bout your schedule - Dave & Helen try to close and get away by 8:30.
Some of us just might have to perform a " 'mergency mission" and bring you a "fix", eh?
BTW: There is a one-pot cookoff at St Arnold's Brewery this Sunday, and Bubba's was selected as one of the judges. Y'all come - all monies collected (after the prizes) go to charity.
ooh..St Arnolds...I'm a fussy beer drinker, and they are on the top of my list..I love lawnmower beer....so is anything in the pot for the cook off..? where is St. Arnolds anyway...boy..you have some good taste Bubba!
Yes..bring me a fix! I need red wine blend fix.
lawnmower beer?
uh huh.....it really is good too after mowing the lawn!
oh, you're a mess.
:-) love it.
Randy, got any of your chicken soup in the freezer? Bet it would win first place.
Just got an email from the brewery - the event is SOLD OUT.
When they announced the contest, they had the 30 cooking teams in less than 12 hours. Yes, there must be any of the St A in the recipe - the brewery will supply one pitcher to each team - the teams choice of brews: Amber, Brown, Lawnmower, Texas Wheat, Elisa IPA, or Winter Stout (the current seasonal).
The brewery is between 290 and Hempstead Hwy. If you go outbound on 290 from 610, take the second exit (34th Street), take the turnaround so you are heading back inbound. Take the second street (Mitchelldale - note: you will probably never see the first street - it goes into the rather large strip center). You can obviously only turn right because you are on the feeder. Take the second left (the only way streets intersect Mitchelldale) on Fairview Parkway, and about a block or so away on the left is the brewery.
They have a tasting every Saturday at 1PM - be there before then to pay the $5 for a glass and the 4 wooden nickels. Entry closes at 1:15. And the whole event closes at 3.
I will send you a list tomorrow of what Circle S "reds" are available - some are getting in short supply.
That's right..I remember passing it on the way to Caldwells...
sold out? well then have fun this weekend!
Looks like the weather will finally be nice...I think the switch for Spring will turned on tomorrow...there are trees in the Heights sporting lovely white blossoms on them...counted 4 of them today...that's a good sign!
Christi....I cooked two giant pots...all gone!
I my neck of the woods, no matter what other signs are abundant, Easter week is the line. However, last year it was even later than that. Remember that April freeze all up and down the map? Caught us all by surprise. Then we had monsoon season. Early Easter this year, very early, March 23. Will pray that this will bring early Spring. Got to find all the ingredients for the soup. Not necessarily stock items in my pantry.
Well let's see here what shall I put into this tonight LOL
knolan....If they can take me into the "fold" being a yankee then there is no reason what so ever you should not be included ...correct me if I am wrong but I take you you have lived here a heck of a lot longer then me making you a true Texan. You bet you are welcome to be in here and I hope you come in April love to meet everyone that goes with the names.
I wish I could say I had a business and closed ti but I have only had hopes and dreams and nothing work out...candles, Mary Kay, Avon, Tupperware, I do stained glass, sew, cook and enjoy crafts but gardening there is always veggies every year until this last one when we moved and had to leave everything planted there. :((
St Arnold's...really neat place and pretty warm in the summer with lots of people in the small area...I'm not much of a beer drinker gave it up after hight school ...*LOL* but went there with my daughter when she was living and working in Huston l in 06 and tried the beer ...not bad..laughed when I saw lawn mower posted above, trying to remember the name of the one I liked but is slipping my mind ....let's see have a cap, the tasting glass, a small stein and t-shirt from there too LOL
oh How can I forget last year, it's STILL fresh in my mind...Easter is usually 80F here, and it was ice..baby birds falling out of the trees dead from freezing...
I'm contemplating unloading items out of the green house next week. I usually have everything out by mid FEB.
I would love to empty my gh, but I don't dare. Up here I know there's more coming, even if it's only a "normal" year. I have lived in Texas most of my life (the army sent us globe trotting) and used to think I had a pretty good idea of what "normal" was around here. But after last year I've decided that "normal" is pretty much a useless word.:) I think I'll wait til atleast late March.
knolan (what's your name, btw?), I thought you'd been here longer than that. I love your posts! I'm as much of a newbie as you are, so hopefully we're both welcome. :)
I just love Friday nights so I can stay up late and not feel guilty.
Thank you so much, Podster. I'm not leaving this wonderful site! I've just been kinda busy the last 6 months so haven't had the opportunity to peruse the threads like I would like to do. No, I'm not working with the children any longer but you wouldn't know it. I have a house full all of the time! As the kids got older and moved on, so did I. It was getting hard to go on vacations, etc. But I keep in close contact with every single one of them and they visit me often. Still stay over here when their parents go out of town, etc. One has even moved to Germany but I get email from him almost every other day. I miss it a lot!
Josephine, I would love to meet you as well. I'm hoping to make it the the CSRU this year but can't put it in stone just yet. April is always such a busy month at the school and it seems like we have a lot of family functions that month, every single year.
Cocoa - I'd just love to meet you too. And share our jewelry. I'd love to see photos! It's been a long while since I've sat down to make anything. I need to get back to doing that. I was making some good mad money back then. I also made belts and purses for the teenagers. Used hemp and beads. The belts were adorable and I had a waiting list. Couldn't make them fast enough.
I just treasure all of my garden friends.
Randy - I may be on a road trip to the Heights tomorrow. I was needing a Thai grocer and that's the only place I seem to have found one in the Houston area. Let me know if you're available and we can maybe meet for a glass of vino. I know it's last minute so don't feel like you have to say yes!
Mibus - a pleasure to meet you. Sounds like we have a lot of similar interests. I crochet, cross stitch, draw, COOK, COOK, COOK, write, garden (pickle and preserve anything I can), and just enjoy my family and friends. I had the pleasure of becoming a Master Gardener this year and it was soooo much fun. I have 8 raised beds for veggies and herbs in the back yard, along with lots of fruit trees.....lemon, satsuma, buddha's hand, lime, fig, pomegranate, peach, avacado, dwarf cherry, papaya (thank you, Randy), plan to do more herbs for the BF's this year (goodbye cantaloupe and squash.....no room left). The front is a mixture of plants. Natives, BF materials, lots of brugs, lots of vines, tropicals, bulbs....I'm really trying to go with more perennials these days.
You got me! I'm a native, born and bred Texan. Been here all my life.
Pbtxlady - I'm Kristi. Nope, only about 2 years but it feels like I've been here longer. It's about time I met more of my Texas neighbors! And it's a pleasure to meet you as well. I just haven't spent enough time on the threads as I would like to have. So, we'll be talking a lot more.
Thanks for all the wonderful posts, everyone. I feel very welcome!
How many Kristi, Kristie, Christi's do we have here. Speak girls, let us know how many of us there are.
LouC=Christi
hahahahaha LouC I bet there are more Kristi/Christi's then there are Phyllis' in this world LOL
knolan your right we do have a number of things in common I used to do alot of canning, freezing dehydrating but as my kids got older I cut back and I see you are already growing a number of the trees I want to grow here
I haven't touched a crochet hook, counted cross stitch or macramé in several years and with the move I'm still trying to figure out time and ways to do thing I would like to be doing other then working.
Luckily hubby is home everyday all day(retired) so I can give him projects to do for getting things ready for the spot I want the veggies in and since I am off from the restaurant job for a week for now I can relax and get my thoughts in order and maybe work on some of them too.
Hey Pbtxlady you got the beauty bush at the RU form me right?...how is it doing?
Yes, I sure did, Phyllis. I'm not sure how it's doing, though. It went dormant when I planted it, and I don't know if it will come back or not. Have to wait till spring, I guess. I'm crossing my fingers.
Well, I think I have a buyer, already(knock on wood)! He say's he wants the building and to just give him a closing date. It's happening much faster than I thought it would *deep breaths,no panicking, deep breaths,no panicking*
Knolan, I think it's so fantastic you made money with your jewelry. I don't think I ever could make any money doing it, I was painfully slow at it. I don't even have that much left to show for it. I was so proud when someone liked something I made, I usually just gave it to them. I need to dig through the closets and see what I still have. I use to sell paintings on ebay and it was the same time/money issue. By the time I bought canvas, paints and paid for a prime listing I would make about thirty dollars per painting, not a lot considering most paintings took a week or two to complete. To make matters worse I lost all photos and records of my paintings. I'll take it up again, but not to sell.
I'm glad you and Mibus both do canning it's something I really want to do more of!
BTW, Mibus is crocheting the same as knitting? I've always wanted to be able to knit my own scarfs. Maybe you and DH could come have dinner this Summer and you could show me how. Have you been doing anymore basket weaving?
i have really enjoyed this site!! i have been making soaps for about 15 years, i've made cards with rubber stamps for about as long and am new at jewlery making--i love to cook too-------i am obsessed with gardening now and with indoor plants too--i wish i could join you all on friday nights but am a little far away for that! sounds like fun tho------i was a stay at home mom while i raised my 4 kids and then back to work --but while at home i always had something i enjoyed obsessing over--oh quilted too--and did stenciling on walls--maybe that is part of why i liked staying home! i did try knitting and made scarfs for a while--i like to read too--i don't know what it would be like to not be obsessed with some hobby!!!!
pbtxlady...well let me know if it doesn't comeback I know there are more out here in the back and we can try another one.
Cocoa..crocheting isn't just like knitting as I have never been able to keep the tension on the yarn right and usually missed a pearl one or two along the way ...LOL..crocheting though to me is easy to learn.
nope on the baskets ran out of wisteria...I'm sure more will come up in the spring that DH missed.
I found the vines that go along the ground that the shoots came out of and the roots went down from worked best, I think I have 2 baskets left here that I didn't give away LOL
Canning is easy to me I still have my canning pot, colanders and cookbook with recipes along with my note cards of fav ones....used to do apple butter, jelly, jams, beets, beans, pickles...etc.
planolinda quilting is one thing I want to do my grandma used to make them all the time ...I have a pattern and squares cut out and a few pieces sewn together by hand but with the time I spend working 2 jobs I just haven't picked it up and tried to get any more put together..I really should work on it as the material is from a square exchange we did in the group I direct online several years ago so material is from all over the world.
Phyllis, I'm going to cut down my wisteria (if I'm brave enough) after it blooms. I will have PLENTY of the vines if you want them.
sure sounds great any and all vines that way I have sizes to work with and length the longer the better as I can cut as needed. Thanks
My computers been down...
but Yes I'm around today! Come by...if I"m not too late!
This is real get-outside-and-do-something weather here! Next front won't be until late Tuesday. I really, really needed this. Will be outside in the garden today. That and cleaning out a space to start some seeds inside.
*looks out windows*....froggy out here still and damp and cool send me the wonderful day you have please LOL
It is foggy here too, but it is supposed to clear up.
Foggy here as well...I'm ready to get out there!
foggy here too--mibus -watch out if you start to quilt--it is addicting-just like gardening--you will be stopping at hancock fabrics on your way to lowes!!
SUN is OUT now LOL ...oh right now I have to worry about gardening LOL and home depot is closer the lowes LOL
the pattern I picked out was the friendship square and I have a few squares put together but doing it by hand takes longer of course and I know I could use the sewing machine but I need to get it in and cleaned and timing set first on it since the move....I am hoping I gave my mom back the boards I had that were my grandma's quilt stretchers LOL if not no biggie I can make new ones..... just have to find the time to work on it again....oh wait I have this next week of only driving a school bus so I can maybe do it some then.
that lack of time thing always gets in the way! i have so many things i would like to try, projects to finish and things to learn about that it gets a bit crazy! i read the posts on daves garden and think-hey, i want to try that! as in growing potatoes, berries, veggies of all kinds, seed propagation, bonsai,-------------oh the list grows daily!
oh yeah I know how well that happens...I was reading the composting forum and picked up on the worm composting and now as of this last week I have a bin in the laundry room started plus back in August I found the info else where on EM-1 and Bokashi composting and have been doing that since then as the gal that is the manager in Texas lives in Whitehouse so I saved on shipping.
I went shopping yesterday to get lights for the seeds in the back room and came home with shelves and lights, starter trays with peet pots an African violet, cabbage plants onion sets and some other seeds and found my veggie seeds had shown up also LOL..plus one of the rose cuttings I took back the 30th of dec has roots so I potted it up out of the plastic bag and took a few more cuttings.....so much to do and not enough time cloning ones self would be nice as long as each clone felt the thrill of everything done LOL
