I guess the old proverb 'time will tell' applys here.
You could let her try, and if she doesn't look as if
she's going to do a good job, you could brood her
eggs/chicks for her, if you have the time. I am not
a very experienced poultry keeper, but I would think
that she would remember how it was last time?

i woke up the this mourning and found her mother also brooding next to her i just think when they see one go broody they all want to go broody her twin sister is still yet to go

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

I hope they all get broody, then! Do they all have eggs
to sit on?

londonderry, Australia

yep the young one hs five and the black one (betty) has 7

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

This is great- everyone sounds like they are getting
the 'spring thing' going, and on their way to lots of
new chicks! Go 'young one' and Betty!

Pretty roo...

Now, one of my hens is gone broody, but it's too early in the year to set her. Plus, she's not even a year old. And, she's incubator hatched. I hope she goes broody in the spring. If she does, I'm gonna set her to see if she will hatch babies and be a good mother.

Of course I only have one RIR too and the other two are austrolorps. And the hens are austrolorps also. So, we shall see.

londonderry, Australia

there is still a chance for her one of mine went broody once in the middle of winter and she was fine. i candeled the eggs and they will be hatching at different times because i did not mark them so incubator will be on standby

Lucky, you are in Australia. Isn't it summer there now?

We are having below zero temps right now and I would worry about her and the chicks freezing because I don't have a heated area where I could put her without being with the others. I know if they have the room to run around they would stay out of the way of the other chicks, but those aren't even coming out of their house right now because of the cold and snow. So, I will wait until it gets a little warmer to set her. If she is still broody or goes broody when the sap starts running, that will be the perfect time. that is usually around the first part of March here.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

My, that is a pretty roo. I am so used to seeing roo's
with dark colors/rust neck and saddle, beetle green tales.
It's cool to see one with light, pretty colors. Hope
you get a good hatch, Lucky.

londonderry, Australia

well i guess it would not be a good idea to set her in your condisions lol but in australia it is summer here and in winter it dose not even snow in my area.and yes my roo is a pretty handsom one and i got him for 10 bucks bargain

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

I told my DH I was still thinking about letting her set on three eggs because I think she might be able to keep one or two chicks warm enough and safe from the other hens, but he said she had gotten off the nest when he went out to get eggs. So I told him to bring in all the eggs and I will have to band her and mark three of the eggs to make sure we don't bring them in when we gather the others. I will have to do that of course. DH doesn't do things like that...just like changing diapers. But we shall see......

londonderry, Australia

well i guess it is worth a shot.................. i would

I have the sweetest rooster in the whole world. At
least I think so. Since I have never owned one, he may
act like every other good roo. He always alerts in a big
way if something is amiss. He stands gaurd while my
hen lays her eggs. He crows when she is done and
comes back to him. When he finds a treat, he clucks
as if he is saying "looklooklooklook" and picks up the bug
or whatever and then puts it down for her to get it. He
always lets her eat first, and rarely flashes a wing opposite
her if he feels he must have a bite, and she backs off.
I believe he is a mix with some ameraucana, a beauitful
guy named Davey. I am just getting a bator this week,
so I can set some of their eggs to see if that is so. I
certainly don't want any more of her as she attacks me
for no reason- she is such a darn good layer, though
not a setter. Blanca is a white leghorn.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Lucky, a friend and I were talking today about my austrolorps being broody and she said maybe it's because they haven't yet learned that they are in America instead of Australia. After all, it's summer there, so maybe their internal time clock is still tuned to your time. LOLOL

londonderry, Australia

lol yeah maybe anyway the chicks are hatching so far i have a black one and a black one with a yellow tummy and there mum is absolutely thrilled the chics are s colourful it is good to watch

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

londonderry, Australia

now only two and the white one is no longer broody i am starting to think mother natur dose not like me much lol ow well it is starting to get coldaround here anyway

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Hi, Lucky, talking about cold...my thermometer read minus 10F this morning. Good thing all three of my broody hens are still doing good on the nest. Two of them get in there and actually share the duties of brooding which might keep the temperature where it is supposed to be. We do have heat and light in the henhouse, but still...... There was frost on the walls yesterday and this morning.

I am so sorry for your loss, but just remember, tomorrow is another day and the mamas will go broody again. Maybe in the latter part of the year after your winter is over. At least we can hope for that.

londonderry, Australia

its summer right now but it is a very cold one it has been raining a lot

londonderry, Australia

one egg has hatched i left at 8 am this mourning and it was not even piped and i got home at 3:30 and it is all dry and running around t he other one is yet to get through the air sck i think it is a goner

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Congratulations, Lucky!!!! Hopefully the other one will hatch, too.

I know it's hard to wait, but just be patient.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Well, it looks as I may have lost my babies. We had marked the eggs with pencil and tried to see the marks whenever we took eggs out of the nest where Ms. Broody was setting because the other hens like that nest too. This evening when DH went out to get the other eggs, he said he couldn't tell which ones were marked. I went out too and the pencil marks are gone. I tried to candle them, but had no luck doing that. I think they may be the dirty ones that were under her, but the straw was damp and I think it might have been too cold and frost got into the nest. But we are going to leave the eggs out there and wait and see what happens.

I am going to bring the incubator in tomorrow and make sure it is working properly and if it is, I may decide to put eggs in it now instead of waiting until mid-March. We should be able to keep them warm enough in the garage as we have heat there and also a brood pen. We have had success with day-old chicks out there, but that was during the first part of April and May.

So, I will keep you folks posted.

Johnson City, TX(Zone 8b)

Aw, Lucky- so sad you lost them. I hope you still get one to
make it. Best wishes to you girl, uh Mama.
Granny- I knew you couldn't wait, just like the rest of us!

may princess tammy have a good winter.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Well, truest, I could have waited, but when I went out this afternoon to check, the walls inside the henhouse were white with frost. When I checked after DH told me he couldn't tell the eggs apart from the fresh, the straw in the nest was damp and cool to the touch. I think it just plain got too cold in the past few days to be able to hatch chicks even with mama hen setting on them. The temps have been below zero for the past three days and don't know when it will warm up.

The reason I am going to bring in the incubator is I want to make sure it is working right. (yeah, right!) I would just have started it without knowing what I was doing but then came aboard DGs and reading all that you guys have posted has taught me a whole lot about doing it right.

Okay, I don't have any patience either...now I have told the truth. :o))

And although not playing that game, I hope princess tammy makes it through the winter without kicking truest's butt!!
