Floral Design Course

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7a)

Pupil, I like the way you used the shells in a basket, lamp and picture as part of your design with your lovely red tulips. Also, I like your bud vase.

HI, have to make a list and get to the store- hopefully this week-end or early next week.
Bum hip and moving slow in this single digit weather, poor blooms will freeze on the way to the car.
I never considered the H2O- ours is extremely high lime content- will use water that has been boiled and cooled and then some distilled- etc.

I'm just leaving an apple on Miss P's desk for her!

Cut flower and water experiment. I used 3 varieties of Water (plain) and the same 3,but with the floral preservative added.
I used commercial white carnations, as close to each other (age wise)
The first water was boiled and cooled in an attempt to limit the amount of lime (I live amidst limestone quarries.
The second was " plant water" that comes from the tap, but is kept in plastic jug for the chlorine gas to rise and dissipate.
The third was tepid tap water.
The first to go was the bloom in the plant water, followed quickly by the one in boiled water.
The tap water was the third.
All three of those with the floral preservative lasted well beyond the "just water", with the "boiled plus" starting to brown off quicker than the other two, who are "petal to pedal in this race"!!!!

My report from the snowy WI floral science lab.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Interesting. When you used the boiled water, did you let it cool afterwards. Wonder what would have boiled out that would have caused those flowers to turn faster.

Hi, did let it cool...maybe heating changes the water pick up quality of the high lime h2o?
more snow coming down on iced sidewalks...5-7 predicted...ack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Present, but tardy. I will however do my makeup work so as to catch up with the rest of the class.

Looong break, all. I still haven't started the next chapter, but plan to do so this week. Enjoy the recess and I'll expect everyone here and accounted for.

Love the experiment, Marcia. You just got extra credit.

Thanks for the apple, Terri. I may have to slip an A on your next assignment.

Hi Charlene!! Glad you found us. It is a very laid back course, so don't worry about tardiness.

Hi I ran across your thread on the net and from a florist point of view was just going to drop a remark on your water tempatures. If flowers are fresh picked or come "dry packed" like my trucks deliver, you need to dissolve your floral food in lukewarm water and let the flowers hydrate for one hour at least before designing or putting in cooler.
If your flowers come form store alreay in water you dont need to put them back in warm water. The floral food will work in cool water also. Always cut off about an inch of stem on bottom with either method before putting in water. Wonderful site!
