Ok, I am the gal that likes wood shelving and lights, ha. I need to use the shelves and table that I have though. They are in my sunroom, I bought them not long ago and I like them the way they are, they are pretty. Please help me with supplemental lighting. They do get light, but in winter, the sun is not as bright.
The shelves are only 25" wide on the baker's racks. The glass table is about 34" long. They are next to each other. I have been to billions of sites online (lights are WAY to long) and called around town about lights. My husband and I bought some lights at Lowes tonight. I can take them back if they are wrong. They are florescent plant lights. We bought the tubes and had to buy fixtures to put them in. They are black (LOVE that) and have a black light in them, ha. I will replace that.
Will the violets be ok with those tubes? They also get natural light.
Attaching the tubes will be interesting. The racks are all open metal work! We did buy some things to fix them to the racks. Took hours at Lowe's tonight.
For the table I may be getting a big clip-on light with a gro light bulb. I will clamp it to the rack and shine it on the table.
Here is a picture. I have the same kind of table and rack on the other side of the room. Those are orchids though.
Help me with the lights please
Love your baker's rack! I would think that if you bought 24" lights they should fit just fine, as long as there is enough room between shelves.
They are 18" long. I just wanted to see if "plant" lights are OK. I have read about red and blue and warm and cool, etc.
If they are specifically for plants, I would think they'd be fine.
Thank you so much for the answer. I was hoping to go back and buy more today.
Beautiful Baker's Rack! I have an old metal one that I've been talking about painting for a few years and haven't done it yet. I just bought those under cabinet lights from Wal-Mart (in the isle that sells light bulbs) and used cloth covered wire to wire them to the metal underneath each shelf. The top shelf just has regular house plants that don't need the intense light. I also took a tip from another DG'er and placed tiles on the metal shelves to keep the plants a bit more stable. Don't think it makes a difference with me though ... I'm always knocking over plants and getting dirt everywhere!
plant and aquarium lights are both full spectrum I do believe as stownes said. They will be fine and the 24" are probably like I have and they put out light for a shelf sitting 15" below.......i don't know why they wouldn't work. Lowe's also has standing light with 3 movable arms that you can put gro light bulbs in.............they also have the lights that sit on the floor and shine up into the plants............good luck.............
Gail, Thanks for the info regarding that light from Lowe's! I will have to check that one out ... is the configuration like one of those old timey pole lights from the 70's? I would love to have a pole light with moveable arms and 3 lights that could be directed towards certain plants!
Yes, Lin..........it is one that looks just like the 70's and is metal..............works great friends have told me...........aim them anywhere you wish.............
