Essential - have you checked out the Stepables website? They have awesome ground covers that are ...stepables. They have them classified to how much sun, how much foot traffic and such. I wouldn't buy from them as they are very expensive but a garden center should have them for about $5 each. I have planted 'Veronica' Golden Creeping Speedwell. It is a gorgeous chartruese green and very hardy. Mine has stayed green all winter. I also use Creeping Thyme - any that are tight to the ground. these are also very hardy and smell so wonderful when you walk on them. The growth of both is moderate so what I did was buy a single Stepable and broke it up into pieces. They all survived and florished!

Gardengirl,

Nice site! You are right, they are expensive but excellent for ideas.

I decided to give the chamomile a try. We'll see how it goes!

I like Gill Over the Ground & Henbit between my raised beds. They are very hardy & will eventually crowd out most other weeds and some grasses. Really tough grasses like the fescue in our area need to be dug or killed with herbicide to get rid of them. Insects don't like the GOG or Henbit because of their pungent odors. So both of these plants serve 2 purposes.

How about straw? I used it between my gus raised beds and love it.
