For those that compost

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

The one in hyattsville md is where he is going

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh there is one in Baltimore too..

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I believe that that's the same one - thanks.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, that's sure way out of the way for me! But just in case anybody else makes a trip and also has room for an extra one in their car... 2 barrels would be even nicer... not necessary, but I just thought I'd mention it, LOL. Basically, if anybody goes to the Pepsi plant, please pick up however many barrels you are able to get, because I think the folks around here will be able to use them. I can send PayPal to cover any that you end up holding for me, and I"ll chip in for the gas to fetch them, too.

And if you can't get any extras, that's fine too! :-)

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I will see what my husband can get in the car today. He is going to take out the carseats and buy as many as he can. I will let you all know. I wish they were opened on the weekend.

Jenn

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I think there was a Pepsi plant on Fort Ave, maybe? , Balt, on the way to Fort McHenry.

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

There is one in Baltimore and I cannot get them to call back..

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I live relatively close to the Cheverly (aka Hyattsville) plant. Depending on when they close, I may be able to go by there today, but I have no idea how many will fit in my car yet ...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok what are these things? I have a pepsi warehouse down south of me but that's not the same as a plant....grrr

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

They still might have the barrels that you would need. Just call them and ask for the recycling department. They will let you know.

I hear that pickle and butter barrels will work also..

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Jenn & DH!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

What are these barrels made of, does anyone know?

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

They are plastic barrels. My husband went up to pick them up and the man in charge of the program was not there. No barrels. UGH

I have another call into them to find out when they can be picked up. I was told that you have to go when this guy is in the office, even though he told me yesterday I could pick them up. When he calls back I will post when they can be picked up...

Oh now I owe my hubby.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

THAT'S A SHAME! What a bad piece of timing.

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, well at least my husband wants them as bad as I do. It was a waste of a lot of gas. He was supposed to be there but went to a different plant instead... I will update as soon as I know now..

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Jenn, if you're referring to Howard T., I left a message for him this morning. Woman on phone told me I could come by before 5pm -- it's on my way home. If he's there, I'll buy as many as will fit in my little SUV then report back this evening.

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Be careful because that is what they told us today and then they said we could not have any... She told me he has to call you and set up a time for pick up.

I hope you get them because they said no to us.. :( what a day!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Just got off the phone with the operator *again* ... this time she stated what you just did... need to set up a day & time to pick them up. Oh, and she does not know if he has left for the day, but he may not be back in until Tuesday as they're off for the Mon. holiday...

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Okay he just called me back and said we could pick them up on Tuesday starting at 6:30 in the monring. My hubby will be there and will try to get four. If I can slip out of work early I "Might" be able to get one in my car..

They are still $5.00 and he said he had a TON of calls today! lmao

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

AARGH! *patented Charlie Brown noise of exasperation* How frustrating!

Here I was hoping to be *Snoopy dancing* with you! Hopefully you'll have better luck on Tuesday. I wonder if he should try to call as he heads over there...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

red cheeks- just asked my son what 'i' mao stood for---he said--'thats an L and I already told you......'

does anybody have a pickle or butter plant by her?
if anybody needs gallon milk jugs for wintersowing , I'm your gal.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, I might take you up on that... by the end of Feb., I'm generally out of WS containers but not out of seeds and really starting to scrounge!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Oh, and I have most of a packet of Pineappla tomatillo, packed for 2006 seed, but I only used a dozen so you'd have probably three dozen in there, just guessing.. you can have. I had bad luck with the seedlings.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally! You're my hero! Mine grew out fine the first couple of years, but I think my saved seed got wet or something last year, and I got poor germination, and the few seedlings that emerged were stunted. If I get seedlings, I will share them with you in spring (because you know we have to get together in spring, right?).

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I am going to be ording some seeds.. If there is anything that someone is dying to have or try let me know. I am placing a "big" order this week.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

I am swimming in seeds ... but ... if you see any noteworthy poppies in your travels through the catalogs, pls scream ... LOL

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

"noteworthy poppies" remember I am the bad gardener.. I do not know what a noteworthy poppy is....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Jenn, where are you ordering from? :-)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

1) There's no such thing as a bad gardener
2) Noteworthy = Pretty in the eye of the beholder
3) We're all learning, so don't knock yourself

On a side note, since you're at USDA, if you haven't taken a class with Joel Lerner (USDA Grad' School or whatever they've renamed it now, he's a SPECTACULAR landscape designer/instructor) -- take it if you get the oportunity!!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

OOOH. How can we find out about classes Joel Lerner might be teaching???

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Go to the USDA Graduate School website and look up the Landscape Design classes, or go to his website ... stand by, will post links...

From Joel's site: http://www.gardenlerner.com/calendar.html

Ouch -- they're expensive! I thought the USDA classes were on the cheap side. So much for that! It is $355 for what looks like 6 weeks -- but the class is underway now.

At some point I want to take the Master Gardener class. Has anyone looked into doing that? Could we do it as a group? Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

That would be awesome! I took a quilting class ortwo with friends and it was so nice
The MG program my friend did was in Dundalk- there was no program near me at that time at least.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Doesn't UMD have a MG program? :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Could well have, I didn't think of that, Dundalk would have been a wee bit closer for my friend . You would think they would.
OH!! sad note--I was reading something about making a town center-type thing on theeast side of campus, including TEARING DOWN UNUSED GREENHOUSES. That makes me sad. Whats the world coing to? Didn't it start as an ag college?
And tearing down old dorms, which probably means the ones I lived in. Old dorm + I lived in = I am old LOLOL

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Ugh ... you are referring to the campus development project which will, effectively, be built right in my neighborhood (well, not *really*, but it is adjacent to my neighborhood and will have a major impact on us). Ag schools don't make money, but developing the land and leasing the property out to big corporate chains does.

I run on campus sometimes. I like to go passed the barns and paddocks, except now it's becoming depressing. The horses have very little turnout, if any (they seem to always be in their stalls) and I haven't seen sheep or other animals there in years (granted, I haven't lived here for long). My equine veterinarian graduated from UMD back when it was a school that made him proud. Now, I keep hearing reports that the equine science and some of the other ag' programs have gone down the drain. Such a bummer.

I would like to know more about those greenhouses that they're ripping down and if they will allow them to be salvaged by interested parties ... any idea where you read that, Sally?

I'll poke around a little

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Wrightie he is there until 2:30.. If you cannot make it today yell and I will see if the hubby can get one for you too..

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

My horse is lame this week, so I have to go to the barn to baby him before and after work. Thanks!

Pepsi guy hasn't returned my call - wonder if I could pick some up on Friday? What a pain.

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

I can call Friday morning and check.. If not yell and if my DH goes on Thursday I will grab you some..
