So many with ties to Nebraska

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

I've been reading alot of the threads this weekends and have noticed that so many have ties to nebraska.
i was born in wahoo, and was raised in valley.
my mom grew up in omaha and lived on dodge street. my aunt still lives in omaha.
my biological father is from the sandhills. my moms father is from kearney.
i have an aunt that lives in york, a niece in lincoln, and another aunt that lives in sargent.
my great grandma was a die-hard true huskers fan, i think one of their biggest supporters.
just thought id pass that on.
seems like such a small world!!

Yes, there are a lot of us with ties to the state. I was born in Fairbury, lived there for 10 years; my parents now live in Steele City (if you know where that is, you MUST be from Nebraska, LOL!), as did my grandparents. I have aunts and uncles in Beatrice and Norfolk, first cousins in York and Omaha, and countless other relatives scattered from Iowa to Wyoming, and Kansas to South Dakota.

As for me, I like being a bit warmer in the winter, so I married a southern boy and stay south of the Mason-Dixon line :)

I have an aunt and uncle also living in Fairbury and a cousin and his family on a farm outside of Fairbury. My dad was born and raised around the Tobias area and also have other other relatives living and around the Beatrice area and a long distant relative to a famous actor who was also born around the same area as my father and his parents. Have friends who live in and around the Omaha area.

To be honest, when we visit my parents, we don't venture too far past Fairbury and Beatrice. My cousins from York generally come to my parents house to see us.

But the next time I see them, I'll ask about the butcher shop :)

Well I still live in Nebraska and have lived here all of my life. I grew up on a farm near West Point and moved to Lincoln after I graduated from high school. I lived in Lincoln until 1977 when I married and we moved to my husbands family farm east of Lincoln. It's nice to hear from all of you former Nebraskans. I did find out not too long ago that my great great great grandfather was the very first male czech male to settle in Nebraska. So I believe I am related to everyone in Nebraska!

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

Jewel, you and I might be the only ones still living here. I grew up in Lincoln then moved to Kearney to live on a farm
quite a few years ago. Kearney is right in the center of NE. This is a state that takes its football very, very, seriously--right K_H_T_? I'm always amazed how small a world it really is.

While I have lived in the NYC area for most of my adult life, I was born and raised in Nebraska. O'Neill, the Irish capital of Nebraska. My undergraduate degree was earned at both the Lincoln and Omaha campuses. I still have many friends there.

Now I live in The Garden State, New Jersey which, I am sorry to tell all you Nebraskans, really is a much more hospitable climate for growing. Here we have ample rainfall and with the use of cold frames can garden all year long if we want. Our soil isn't so hot, though--clay. In fact I have bought all my soil for my raised beds. But other than that, it is a wonderful climate for growing and I enjoy it very much here. Still go back to Nebraska once or twice a year, though!

KHT - lol - we have friends who live in New Mexico and belong to New Mexicans for Nebr - ditto for friends in Colorado! First game is this Saturday! A few players have been misbehaving (mildly put) and it hasn't been reported yet what, if any, punishment they will get.

Where'd they go????

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9A)

Here's another one with a link to Nebraska, though I just lived there 1970 - 72. I worked for the State Museum as a fossil collector, dug up mastodons and mammoths and three-toed horses, etc. In two years I saw much more of the state than most people who live there all their life! My favorite part was around Chadron.

LOL Sis maybe I will, paid a visit to Topeka too while I was there, but only for a short while.

I noticed those red chips in the store the other day. Maybe I will have to pick them up to eat during the game on Saturday. Did any of you eat the Wimmers weiners while living in Nebraska? I know you will all laugh but they are the "prime rib" of hot dogs. They make them in my home town. Lots of relatives work/worked there and they really swear that they don't put the gross stuff in their hot dogs (chicken lips, etc.) like some of the companies do. Euphrobrom - I would rather live in the western part of this state than in the eastern part. It's getting too crowded on this end. Did you do any research in the Valentine area? I think it is gorgeous up there.

New Orleans, LA(Zone 9A)

I don't remember Wimmers but I do remember runzas- after 30 years I can still taste them, just thinking of them!

Yes, I did some work fairly near Valentine. South of Merriman I recovered 90% of a 3-toed horse about the size of a Great Dane - all of it was there except the skull, the most important part of all. It is very unusual to find so much of a skeleton, most of the time one r two bones is all that one finds.

I have to speak up here - Fairbury brand hotdogs are as red as the Huskers shirts, and they're made in MY former hometown of Fairbury, NE (grin) and I hear they're sold at the U of N home games. I can't tell ya what they put in them, though..... ;0) We smuggle home about 10 pounds of hot dogs and 10 pounds of Fairbury brand summer sausage every time we make the trip home!

Euphobrom, there's a recipe for Runzas in the Recipe forum, courtesy of Nebraska_Jewel. I make a couple of huge batches each winter, freezing a lot of them for quick snacks, and dinners when we're in a rush.

Yes - Fairbury hot dogs are good too! I heard a little tidbit of interesting news the other day. The Fairbury hot dog people are the largest distrbutor of Rocky Mountain Oysters. And Colorado buys the most! Sis - so if I would send Karma a bag of the chips, would they explode?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Jewel, you didn't ask me, but I *think* they would just lose their seal, so they will go stale pretty quick. It seems like that's what happened when we'd have unopened chips traveling back and forth between Colorado and Nebraska.

Interesting news about the "by-product" of hotdog making :)
