I hope all of the lily people will share their links and info :) I've found tons of stuff on this thread and appreciate all of your experience!!
Dave's is getting tagged!
I think I will like the personal cloud best that would still be available to all. The all-inclusive one is already getting HUGE.
Hmmm . . . . I wonder if there should be a tag for Sherleft - LOL(not)
Isn't it terrible? I still just don't "get it"...the whole tag thing and why it is great. Help me out here. I read that whole thread and I still can't figure it out. I even read gardenwife's explanation, which others thought was good, and I'm lost here.
Oh no, it's really not supposed to be terrible, it's to make it more intuitive...eventually. I just wrote this post:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4394367
does that help at all?
there should be a Sherleft tag :)
What's the purpose of "tagging" something? Is it to be used with in a forum? Does it effect the "Favorites?" Why would I use it?
I think that Dave is going to build a search that let's you look for specific tags, right now it's just a tag cloud.
http://davesgarden.com/tools/tags/
and you can look at what everyone has tagged
It probably matters how much tagging is done, because that would effect how helpful it would be to the average person. You know how filing cabinets are- if it's set up for one person, it's mostly just helpful to them, but if many people are in and out of there it's set up to be intuitively understood by everyone that needs access to the information.
Not sure what will happen with favorites, but I doubt he will get rid of them. It would make more sense to have them as separate entities. Forcing people to use tags when they are used to the bookmark system would just annoy everyone. But as a separate tool, it will be nice to have.
Ok, but I still don't understand what the point of it is and why you would use it.. Or for that matter what it's supposed to do. BTW, I never liked filing. :)
Well, I put in one for "computer keyboard shortcuts". I have this link in my favorites and some people may find it useful. However, I don't use Windows on my home computer so...
I'm still trying to figure this out too.
Laugh, I hated filing until I got a job where one person put important information away in a way that only made sense to them, and they quit :) I found out how much nicer (for everyone) things are if they are actually organized in a simple and intuitive way- not some obscure way that only appeals to one person.
Why I'm so excited about it, is that people coming later- even me now, who's been here almost 2 years, can have the benefit of someone who's been here for 7 years bookmarks. If those people go and tag things that have been said in year one of DG. I will be able to pull them up easily now, as opposed to trying to use the search engine to wade through tons of irrelevant information, before I finally get one nugget of useful stuff. Does that make any sense?
Tags augment the search engine. If you have easily found everything you have ever looked for with the search engine, then you're in the minority. In theory, tags will actually bring up more relevant information than the search engine will.
Ecrane3 esplains it very well on her post here:

and here (disregard the first paragraph unless you've been following the very long thread):
