When first frost comes we are always in a rush to get all the Brugs cut back to the ground and put in buckets This Adeline came back from the ground last year and was very large as you can see. We kept it in the bucket of water for several weeks and then tried to root the whole thing. I think it worked. It is as tall as I am and already has buds. If this works out we are going to plant it out where it gets more sun than the mother plant does and will then have two Adelines. Next year I should get lots of above the Y cuttings.

One big Adeline cutting
I'm confused, you said you kept it in a bucket of water then tried to root it. (Did it not get any roots in the water?) and you planted it in a bucket of soil then it rooted. I'm sorry you lost me on this proceedure.
Robynznest, when you cut hundreds of Brugs and put 15 to 20 large trunks in one bucket, the water goes bad quickly. They were in our hoop-house and are hard for Maggi to take in and out every few days to change the water. So we decided to pot Adeline up and not let her go bad. Some rotted because we could not change the water enough and did not have room in our first hoop-house. The buckets were in the back and there was not enough room to get them out, unless you move a lot of other plants. That would take keeping the door open for a long time and we had some very cold whether at the time. We are just finishing up our second hoop-house and will try potting up any Brug trunks that have not rotted.

I understand now. That would be a big job and too much cold for the rest. I just didn't understand that they weren't getting any changes of water. Glad it worked out for you that way, that's some big brug you got going.
Big cutting! Congrats on the bud!
Ken, Is there a better temp that you should have the water when you are trying to get a cutting to root?
Mickey
Kenboy,
Beautiful cuttings. I don't believe I will ever have one that size. And the other brugs you have potted up, very envious here.
Well, now I am broke! I went into your site and the links to get me to spend money. Well, it worked. Hopefully some of the seeds that I bought will sprout.
I am in for it now. My climate is not great for these brugs, but that will not stop me yet.
Thanks for the site and your information. Your flowers are beautiful.
Marie
I am embarassed by the web site MyRee. I have asked Ken to not post the link until I can get it cleaned up - LOL!
I have a bunch of pics from 2006 and 2007 that I would like to use on our site, now the problem is finding them and editing the pages - so much to do, so little time ROF
Here is the same Adeline with Pink Beauty to the right. We were moving our Brug to the new hoop-house and when I put my hand under Pink Beauty's pot, I felt roots. So I know she is rooted. It is going to be so nice to have Brugs this large before Spring even starts. For years we grew our Brugs all Summer just to see them bud up just in time for first frost.
Mickey, we do not water with warm water because of the large amount of plants we have to water but if you have the time I would go for it. Plants like to keep their roots above 50 F to root and grow.

They are real honkers!!!! ;-)
Ken,
Thank you for the tip. I have mine in the laundryroom. It must be around 70 in there.

You surely have developed a wonderful system to get those beautiful Brugs Ken. You mentioned on another thread that if you want really good growth, you have to give the Brugs lots of light. I went back to the basement to look again and the Brug that is three times bigger than the others is getting the most light from the basement window. I am going to figure out how to get more light from that small window or rotate the pots. It might help to wash the window inside and out☺slight chance of that happening anytime soon, well maybe for the sake of the Brugs I will!!☺
There is also grow-lights. This way you will get a jump on Spring.
Ken, I am coming to get MY Adline!!!! What time is the party and what should I bring?
hello all! i've admired brugs from afar for years and i've finally decided to give them a go, so i hope you don't mind some questions from a novice. i've read that brugs have a large root system and i'm trying to keep some 4' trees going this winter. what size container would be best? i noticed ken's large, beautiful cutting is in a small container. do they need a large container to grow? secondly, i've noticed people have cuttings for sale. is rooting them fairly easy?
Oh yes rooting is very easy I put about 2-3 inches of water in a glass and I change it everyday and soon enougth I have roots..........
Ken,
Wow do you have brugs!!! Are you selling them?
Mickey
thanks pensacola! i just found the thread that monika started (in '04)on how she starts her cuttings...exactly like you said! thanks again :)
Sure thing they are very fussy about the water being changed regularly even if you do it every other day but I do it everyday as I am told...
Gosh Ken, I don't think you have enough either. Better build another GH and fill it too.
Oh just look at those Brug Blooms! Fantastic! Be still my beating heart♥
Ken! You really have a factory thingie going on there...
HOLY MOLY!
I got tired of listening to Joan's whining so we took her a cutting of Adeline last night. Nadine came up from south Texas to get her puppy and Pambi and Tirol ( more garden buddies ) came out from Arlington yesterday. We all went to Joan's for dinner and good times. Joan is our partner in Brugs. She germinates the seed ( something she is good at ) and we grow most of them out.
kenboy
where is mine ...........lol
LOL, yes, There are lots of brugs in that hoophouse..I know..I seen it alllllll...hahaha..
