"Gardeners know the best dirt."
What's Your Favorite Gardening Quote?
when I think about hydroponics, for some reason this Richard Brautigan poem always comes to mind;
All Watched Over
by Machines of Loving Grace
by Richard Brautigan
I'd like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a cybernetic meadow
where mammals and computers
live together in mutually
programming harmony
like pure water
touching clear sky.
I like to think
(right now, please!)
of a cybernetic forest
filled with pines and electronics
where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.
I like to think
(it has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and joined back to nature,
returned to our mammal brothers and sisters,
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.
O, Adam was a gardener
And the God who made him sees
That half a proper gardener's work
Is done upon his knees.
Edited to add that was Kipling.

That was great, Texan! You should bump it!
Adversity happens to all of us. Punishment is whether we believe we deserve it.
Some drink at the Fountain of Knowledge, others gargle...Unfortunately, I have a habit of garglingj!! Anybody else? Michelle
I'm a gargler, too!
God made dirt, and dirt don't hurt.
-My Mom
It makes me sad, love can't be had for a cactus and a rose.
-Gary Stewart
It's all I could think of!
This is one I really like: Gardening didn't keep Adam out of mischief.
"A garden is where the soul feels at home."
This is so true for me.
Couldn't have said it better myself Jo in Tx. I need to get that engraved in stone.
I have a plaque with that quote on it in my laundry room. I love it. Whenever I feel myself getting stressed, I look at that and remind myself to go sit outside on my swing for a while. (Of course, I always end up walking around, pulling a few weeds, deadheading a few flowers. etc.)
But it always works to make me feel more at peace. :)

I see a post above about winning a lottery...
If I should ever win the lottery (not that I buy tickets haha) , I would buy a larger house (guest bedrooms for kids and grandkids) with a huge yard. I would hire a lawn crew to make me some large, wonderful borders and beds. (At my age, I feel like I don't have to do that anymore.) Then, I would spend my life planting and tending my garden, all the while hiring a maid to do the housework, laundry and cook! LOL
Good health, family and friends, and all day in the garden. Can't get better than that on this side of eternity, imo! :)
Hey, "the grass always looks greener on the other side". That's an old one. But so true. I've seen it in my life, many times! Michelle
I have stones with sayings on them in my backyard. Here are some of the sayings:
"Garden of weedin'"
"Please turn me over" - other side says "Thanks that feels great!"
"I'm not old, I just need repotting"
"Don't make me come down there!
-God"
The last one is my favorite.
My Mother gave me a little old plaque with the saying:
"Who plants a seed
Beneath the sod
And waits to see
Believes in God"
I often think that gardening is one way of staying in touch......
witnessing miracles (even small ones) does that to me
Great thread! Lee
I really have to agree with that one. We only get to do a little bit of help. God the Father does the rest.

Chinese Proverb; "Best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago. Next best time? TODAY!"
I like that one.
My great grandmother said rain was god's seasoning for the earth!
I have a cute little plaque that sticks into a pot, it says, "The Earth Laughs"
And it certainly does laugh at me~
it's laughin at all of us for sure! How about ...let me thnk......'Life happens in the Garden' (Alright, I ran out out of sayings, made that one up!)
"Everything I have that does well, does so in the compost of its dead predescesors".-Gene Bush
"Gardening is trowel and error"
I've always loved this song by John Denver:
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
'Til the rain comes tumbling down
Love John Denver!!!
I sing that one all the time -- of course, I first heard it when it was Pete Seeger... dating myself again...
I like that sign, Gail!
That's a nice mess of beans - gonna can them, or just chow down?
I am going to see a daughter this weekend and thought I would start gathering up veggies to take to her. Getting a head start on gathering her veggies. I am too old to 'do' the whole garden in one day for her.
Still have to get squash, okra and other things to take to her. Even the tomatoes should be red by the weekend.
She is one "lucky" daughter.
Glad your garden is being so productive.
I just confess that my brother and all my cousins grow big gardens and we all share. (They all farm) The beans came out of his garden but I will get sweet corn from a cousin before I leave. The last 3 years I worked my fingers to the bone down at the garden and it almost killed me (LOL)
My sister in law and I put up corn and and black eyed peas with a professional sheller for the peas and a some kind of gadget that you run down the cob to get the corn off. However, she is now 69 and I am 66, so we just enjoy the garden as long as we can and share with people around here. Last summer we would take 15 gallon tree black containers to Church and people would take what they wanted each Sunday.
We may be on the verge of getting too old and they may have to come to the gardens.
"A clean house is the sign of a wasted life" or gardening time as I like to tell my DH....LOL!
this is long, because it is a poem, not a quote, but it is my very favorite:
***A Week in the life of a Gardener's Spouse ***
She dug the plot on Monday-
The soil was rich and fine,
She forgot to thaw out dinner-
So we went out to dine...
She planted roses Tuesday-
She says they are a must,
They really are quite lovely,
But she forgot to dust...
On Wednesday it was daisies-
They opened up with the sun,
All whites and pinks and yellows-
But the laundry wasn't done...
The poppies came on Thursday-
A bright and cheery red,
I guess she really was engrossed-
She never made the bed...
It was violets on Friday-
In colors she adores,
It never bothered her at all-
All the crumbs upon the floors...
I hired a maid on Saturday-
My week is now complete,
My wife can garden all she wants-
The house will still be neat!
It's nearly lunchtime Sunday-
And I cannot find the maid,
Oh no! I don't believe it!
She's out there WITH THE SPADE!!!

Good one, seedpicker!
I love it!
Too cute!!!
that is great, seedpicker! Love it!
Nice! I saw one of those fake rocks in a feed store that said something like "I tried but it died!"
Yes, that's the gardener's lament on a sad day.
