Hi,
We bought our house in May and I was on the road with work until July, so if anything bloomed, I didn't catch it. This is my first year to start gardening (July), so it has been one learning experience after another. The only thing that surprised me was the red spider lilies (sooo lovely), but I have found bulbs all over the back yard. As it looks like I will be moving soon, I have started to dig some up. I have been told that bulbs, such as spider's, will take a bit to reestablish, but I have the time and refuse to leave these behind. lol. Any help with ID's would be greatly appreciated.
The first photos are what I found today. This area is extremely overgrown, so I can only tackle small spaces at a time.
Thanks Traci
New gardener with old garden and LOTS of bulbs
No ideas but that sure is cool looking.
Looks like you still got lotsa diggin to do!
I am sure some of the experts will check in later this morning. I am zone 9 and where I live it averages the high 20's to the low 30's and all of my spring bulbs are popping up.
Are you following me :o)
IMASTALKER! HE HE HE
That last one looks like my amaryllis bulbs.
I just started planting bulbs this past year. I find them to be easy to grow and I seem to kill them less often. I look forward to hearing wht it is you have.
Then maybe I sould be stalking her!!
That is probably what those are then.
Misty I do not mind flying. You better ide those bulbs!!
Night Traci :o)
Marie, I don't got em yet, so don't get those flight plans just yet! LOL
Love those spiders. Maybe I need to just fly over to Traci's and help her dig some up.
Could you get moving on the sugar daddy?
Patience dear. BADDDD one today. I'll talk to ya tomorrow. Love ya.
Ok Missy, you best call me tomorrow cause you know I worry about ya! BTW, read your Dmail! LOL
Love ya girlfriend, nighty night! ♥♥♥
I'm intrigued....when these are in the ground are the leaves upright or do they flop over? I'm thinking either hippeastrum or amarcinum? or lycoris maybe......
when you figure out what you have I've got some things on your wants list...teeeheee
your first bulbs look like hyacinth? the big ones are almost certainly amaryllis.
if they are pushing this hard right now that's normal for spring bulbs in zone 8. You will know very soon what they are!
If it's an old garden you probably have daffodils, scilla, and Leucojum.
If you end up with extras you KNOW there will be lots of DGers willing to "help" you find good homes...
The small ones with the large clumps in the leaves look like daffidils of some kind. Definitely not hyacinths. I have a few peeking few but not nearly as far along as yours are. Must be a very early blooming variety. Leucojum leaves do look very much like daffodil leaves but it is awfully early for them, as here they're not normally out until April. I am thinking some kind of narcissus. I agree the large ones are likely amaryllis.
Thanks everyone.
The problem is, from what I understand, that when I dug them up, some will be verrrry picky and take at least a year in the ground. Currently I have them stored in a sterlite box, opaque, will holes drilled for air, in dark, and temps around 55 - 60 edgrees. the are stored in vermiculite. THIS WAS ALL PURELY GUESSING, so please correct me if I have done this wrong.
The second problem is in I am in the middle of a D and have no idea how long I will be here. Could be just a month, could be 6. Here's hoping for a very early spring.
The third problem is the SIZE of the yard. There is only me and it is a mangled mess of ivy and monkey grass (which I am now scared to pull because leaves can be similar).
Tropicanna, the leaves have all been straight up. No flopping.
Marie, buy that ticket. I will be very generous. lol.
Once I can get everything I can out of the yard, I will definitely share. That is what DG is about!!
I have also dug up some possible DL's in the front and side yard.
I have my daughter this week, so I will RARELY, be around. I'll try to keep you all posted.
Thanks,
Traci
Steve
after looking around my yard I agree, the 1st pic look like Narcissus of some kind. Mine are not as far advanced here in zone 8b which fooled me a bit. But of course I didn't plant any of the early Narcissus, ie "paperwhites"
Exciting and yes it looks like it will be opening soon!!
it's a bulb-o-rama!!!!!!!!!!!
All of the bulbs you've found look as if they have naturalized in those areas. The middle one in the last picture looks like an amarillis (sp) to me.
Wow - you have so much coming up so early! Interesting - please post pics when you have some blooms!
Traci I really need to come help you dig. Tha first picture of the new pictures looks like daffs of some kind to me. I have the exact same thing coming up although because I am an ADD gardener I never can remember where or what I have planted.
