Now Jill, I can't make any promises....but.....I have babies of Iced Pink Flamingo.
From what I have read, the variegation doesn't show up on every baby only a few. I have also read that the variegation comes later (kind of like dalmation spots). So far my babies are only 2 weeks old and only one is showing any variegation. I have high hopes for the others though. I have to keep the one that is showing variegation as I don't have a plant of it for myself as I started from a leaf. BUT if the others start to "get their spots" I will put your name on one :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I am SO looking forward to swapping some plants this spring! I'd better get busy... :-)

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Ohhhh yooo hoooo Jill.....I don't have Iced Amethyst though *wink, wink*
I have a good feeling I will get another variegated Pink Flamingo and when it gets big enough I will put your name on it and send you a "baby picture" *lol*

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have got to pot up those babies before they start stressing out in their nursery container! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll get an 'Iced Amethyst' to you if I have to take a division from the mother plant, Kim... speaking of which, that pot is starting to look pretty crowded. I don't really want to up-pot, because I really love the decorative container the pot is sitting in. Has anybody divided a strep (without killing it, LOL)?

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I KNOW Brenda has as she sent me the division and it's doing well.
I wish I knew where Brenda is....I'm missing her terribly.
Come Home Brenda....We miss you!

Here are step by step instructions with pictures (scroll down past potting up) though if they help:

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I should've known the culture pages at Rob's would have an answer! (That's usually the first place I check, unless I know a topic has been discussed here recently!) Thanks, Kim!

My strep was wick watered when I bought it, and since I'd heard streps do better watered the regular way I tried that... but I think wick watering is just what this plant is used to! Anyway, it is thriving. :-)

Critter, I separated my Thumbelina 2 weeks ago. Her crowns weren't hard to separate. I kept her in a dome for one week and now they have been under the lights for a week now. ........all 7 new pots.

Thumbelina is a small leafed grower with many small blooms in pink.

I love your baby streps Gail they're so cute.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

They are just now starting to perk up a little and get some roots of their own. It was easy to divide the mother.

I will post the same picture I just did on Kim's thread..........I have all these streps I grew from seed that Snowrose gave to me. I can't sell them at the violet sales as they are only hybrid seedlings and don't have an official name. They do to me as you just put the mother's name on it and say "Hybrid Seedling".

They are now ready for a 3" pot...........so lots of work to finish..........

I have to leave a picture of blooms each time I visit this.........wish you all would pull pics from the past year with me.

Oh stop this!! The only reason I look good is because the really good growers like Snowrose, Rain and Keyring (and many more) are not posting anymore. Hopefully they are just on vacation. You are in deep trouble if I am a captain of growing!!!!!!!!!!

jannich and people like her are just shy and can grow a lot better than I can. I really mean it. I copy them.

OK picture time again .......can't get up to look at the name......sorry
Someone has posted and I will read.......afraid I will lose my post.

jannich,
please please please teach me how to grow those sinningias. The one you sent me just like that one is pathetic looking. It is the very same numbered sinningia and i can't grow it.
Check out the size of your leaves!

Help me to remember to order the seed to that exact one because I will learn!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Jannich, That is a beautiful flower... How long does one take to get that big? Not that I have any of them...LOLOL I to am learning... One day at a time... I hated AV before joining in with this bounch of ladies... Now I am thinking I will have to get another table/shelfs for all I am getting...LOL ALSO I have kept almost all of Lins/plantinladylin Av plants she sent me alive... Two I sent to a dear new friend and we spoke the other night and she said hers is blooming like crazy...LOL One of the Av's is a varigated and I can't wait for it to bloom or just get bigger... Now down the road I would love to have more varigated ones as I seem to like most plants that are that way...
Ok wrote you a book will end it now...
Hugs,
Susan

Sinningia???? Why did I get the impression they were tiny plants? Are there mini's of those and ...is standard the right word??? Someone who KNOWS something help me out here!

(Zone 1)

Yeah, Diane: I guess there are some that would be called Standards since they get pretty large. The only ones I've tried so far are little teeny Micro Mini's that I've gotten in trades. I love them. I never cared for teeny plants before cause I couldn't seem to keep little ones alive but these seem so easy ... and bloom their little hearts out. I have one I got from Jannich - micro mini sinningia rio das pedras and another I got from Raingazer called micro mini sinningia pusilla. They look a lot alike to me, same little lavender/lilac colored flowers but they are just sooo cute! I will hold one for you too.

This is a pic of little S. 'pusilla' in a small little jar. The jar looks larger cause I cropped the photo.

Sinnngias come in about 3 or 4 sizes.......go google them and you can find out...........or go to Beslisle's on line order site to see some pretty hybrid ones. I seem to like species of a lot of plants.

******edited to say I am about ready to place an order to grow from seed sinningias and other gesneriads..........

Gail, gonna have to change your name to: gessieseedsgail, LOL.

Oh, you just had to tempt me with the link to Belisles, didn't you?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Don't order any, Lin. I just love to grow from seed as does jannich. We are working on a sinningia seed list right now! jannich belongs to another club where she just got 5 packets of seed and I am going to order from both Mauro and the Gesneriad Society.

We are planning a marathon sinningia season this spring and summer!

Plus, I didn't buy in Austin when I was there a whole table of sinningias. But now I am more prepared to buy at these wonderful sales here in Texas and I am going to both the state convention and the national convention in Oklahoma this year. I am getting much more selective each time I get to go.

***it makes me so mad that I used to could grow them and I am determined to start again and learn

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok this is goodnight for real.. Gail I really would love some seeds to buy plus hsipping

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Susan, I want you to look at the list of seeds...................or do you just want to grow sinningias????????

jannich has done her homework and I haven't done mine..........she even knows a place you can join for 10.00 and then you get to pick out your choice of 5 packets of gesneriad seeds.........I will have to ask her again what the name of the club is...........

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I have never grew sinningias seeds and I don't even know what they look like but I am willing to try any seeds...

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi All;
Since they are my favorite plants, i can tell you they are so very easy to grow. You get germination in no time, usually a few days.I have been growing them for over 25 years & have a great collection myself. I am sure you will love them. gessiegal i will send you some seed as soon as my seed pods ripen.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Bonnie, I LOVE the looks of sinningia. I put together a "someday" order for Dave's of just sinningia and it comes to like $74.00 so it's really a "not in million years list" *lol*
I would be SO scared to spend that kind of money never having grown them but I totally fell in love with some of the ones he has.
He told me if I order early he includes 3 extra plants. This was one of the orders I was trying to quit smoking for so that I could buy some plants from him. Needless to say, I still can't quit smoking so unfortunately won't be able to order :( I keep trying to quit but it's just bigger than me I'm afraid.
There were a couple on his site that I just would die for! Someday maybe.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie,
I would be more than thrilled if you send me seeds from any of your sinningia!!! Thanks so much!

I forgot to add a picture on a picture thread (LOL)

Hi there ladies,

Gail,Maybe you plant is starting to going dormant?? They don't look pretty when they go domant.I think we can get seed from that plant.I'll check.

Susan,Thank you. That plant is my pride and joy.Keyring grew it from seed I think and I have had it for around a year and a half? Something like that.so I'm not quite sure how old it is. I have my little war with AV's.LOL.I love them but can't grow them well.I love varigated leaves too.I have a few AV's but not many.Streps are a favorite of mine.It doesn't take long to get the AV bug and start running out of room. Please post pictures when your AV's bloom.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

jannich, that is what it is doing............I repotted it the other day and the roots are just one giant hard something and it only has the 3 bottom leaves left. They have fallen off one by one. Now what do I do? Do I keep watering (wicking that it)?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I decided to look up a few avs from First Class that are getting ready with buds to bloom here.
Here we go!
