It is fun to see pictures of blooms especially in January. They don't even have to be gesneriads as Lin found a plant she wants to grow that was posted. This might give us ideas of plants we might like to grow.
Please join in the posting.
gail
I don't know why I don't have this plant anymore as she is one of my very favorites...'Newtown Shared Venture'
Blooms from the past to cheer up January!
Beautiful Gail! I love variegated foliage. That one has a pretty shape to it too!
I think I may take a nap before the football games come on. Everyone else is out shopping right now I guess.
Here is a Russian one when she was a baby with her first flush of blooms.
Lubimaia Dochka (9613) 01/27/2006 (B. Makuni) Single light lavender-lilac large frilled pansy/purple edge. Dark green, ovate, scalloped. Standard
Those are beautiful Gail.. Can you give me and idea at how far spaced your shelfs are? I just spent 15 mins. trying to get a stupid lamp in then the darn thing is not working... This weather is killing my body... First we freeze then today we were in the high 50's then they say by Monday we will hit 60's... If my body does not stop this I will have to go to the Doctors on Monday for shots... Does not help when the things you want to do just don't do it correct...LOL I don't want to cut up my AV's if my lamps are not up.....
Also went to the nursery this morning before I had to come home and take my meds.... I got 3 new begonia's and the thing that upsets me is they are never labled... So Gail do you mind maybe a little later if I take pictures and show you them ?? Maybe you could help.... If not I understand and when I can sit longer I will try to look them up.... I am going to go rest now and put my body up for a few then I think I will repot some of my little leaves that are getting bigger... I am afraid to do this but I am going to bite the bullet....LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Those are gorgeous Susan. They require a lot more humidity than the cane ones do but you can do it. I have never heard of a trailer but rexes can get mighty big. I wish you could post on the begonia thread and get some advice, but, if I were you, I would make sure that they sit on pebbles or rocks with water underneath at least.
I have mine outside on the porch so I know they take cooler temps (but we have high humidity)
Why don't you google rex begonias and see what it says to do with them as they are soooooo pretty.
I was not to concerned about how to take care of them as I have had others but I will do a search on them... I just get upset that I got these from a nursery and they never have names on them... Shoot from a nursery I think they should.... Also Gail you know as they get bigger you can have some of them also... :-) So far I think I have mailed the one I sent you to a total of 4 people... I am hoping these do as well under trees in the summer...
Hugs,
Susan
Oh that is right! I forgot and mine are doing great! I was thinking that they were new to you. I never know the names. I rooted some of them in water and some are growing in soilless mix. They look good and I am so grateful. I can never remember what I have sent and what someone has sent me (LOL)
I have got to quit babying these and put some in larger containers so they can grow. Don't laugh but they are still under a dome. They won't be after today, but they had a hard time getting started .
Susan- Congrats on your great begonia 'haul'! Names or no names still beautiful.
Well Gail - you know me and pink so don't get me wrong, I love that pink flamingo. But the Night Beacon- WOW. That's just a great picture
My reply just went bye bye on its own... Must have ghosts tonight in the puter or on Daves... Oh well
I was saying that if I went to the box store but this is a nursery and when there people don't even know what they are that is awful.... Oh well....
I went and got two new light set ups... Now this really makes me see red...LOL I am no fan of Wally world, well one light did not work at all as the insert was made about an inch to long so the bulbs don't fit, then the second one has a big dent in it... Kevin wants me to take the dented one back to and tell them I want a discount on damaged goods... Shoot at least it works...LOL This is the second time with me buying the shop lights from there and they did not work... On the other hand we have a Lowes and they want 20.00 for shop lights that look cheaper then the ones I get for 8.00 somthing... Oh well... Tomorrow is always another day... I did buy a very pretty Av from the nursery and I will send a picture in the next post... I have to go take a picture of it...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
Bring on the pic!
This so totally off subject but something JUST NOW hit me as funny-- The last 2 days I worked I had 2 DIFFERENT people come in and ask for sorghum moss!!!!! The first day it kind of took me by surprise, had to think a sewcond about what they were actually wanting, but by the second day I was ready!! Oh, OK let me show you the SPAGNUM moss...... LOL AWhat are the odds of that wierd thing happening 2 work days in a row??!!
Susan those are beautiful! That onelooks almost a cobalt or what they used to call electric blue!
susan, you are hiding these blooms from us! (lol)
I am showing old pictures but I am getting ready to let the streps go into full bloom as I won't be entering any of them..as they are not big enough by the end of February.
***boo hoo, I let my 4 year old grandson choose his favorite plants for a terrarium and he got the last of South Shore Rose. She was my very first order for an african violet last spring.
South Shore Rose (7023) 12/17/1988 (E. Gross) Double pink two tone ruffled/some rose shading. Medium green, longifolia, quilted. Standard
OOOOO- pretty!!!!
Now after looking at your grids I finally got the idea of it... Gail can you wick anything or do certain flowers dont like it? This would make my life better if I could do some of my other types of leaf...
I am sitting here eating honey glazed chicken... God is it gooood... Oh and teryak rice...yum
Hugs,
Susan
Yum! Pass me some of that chicken, would you, Susan?
I wick every single plant except Streps now. I have always wicked streps but am changing to see if i get better plants this way. I am watering the streps from the bottom in a tray and then use a turkey baster bulb to pull out any excess water after 30 minutes on my streps . I think they are doing better.
I don't know anymore than other people on here........I just keep experimenting. I am also not going to use #18 poly string anymore...even on the solo cups. They just don't wick enough water and I have changed to #36 string for all wicking.
I want that Orchid (just teasing)..........I would buy them at Lowe's but they aren't pretty and they all costs 34.00 each.............
must add a picture on each post. I will find my vandas when they were in bloom. Remember that I didn't make them bloom. These were new but they are still healthy and putting out new roots and foliage.
Love your Vandas Gail! I have 1 or 2 that I bought online that weren't blooming. I can't wait to see if I can get them to bloom. They were bare-rooted so I put them in a pot. I know most people pu them in the teak baskets just stapled in but I know I wouldn't care for them properly that way. Are yours in baskets?
The roots are totally exposed and they are in teak baskets......just remembered to go put them in the bath tub.......every day I do this and sometimes add fertilizer.........they are looking good...............a lot of trouble but worth it I guess.
The phals I have planted in orchid clay pots with peat and bark............they look fine also.
That's why I didn't put mine in the teak baskets!!! Every day? I know myself well enough to know I wouldn't do it. Hey at least I am willing to admit it and be honest about it LOL For my Phals I just use straight Schultz Ultimate Orchid Potting Mix. If they're miniature I add a finer fir bark mix to that, maybe a little extra perlite. Just to have smaller peices to fit in those little pots.
I hope with the Vandas it's the same results- Remember mine hasn't bloomed yet! LOL
I want an AV trailer!! Do I propagate my little miniature AV the same way as others?
WOWSA- That last one is amazing Gail!
I'm cheating and have a leaf rooting in a vase in water right now hehe- it's from an AV at work I liked- blooms looked like lilac and white roses- so sweet
I rooted one in water before but gave it away so don't know how it did after it was planted. I'm so impatient I know I'll be tugging on the miniature leaves in their soil to see if they're rooted or not. I'm not about to try them in water- just too small
My one strep is 'Iced Amethyst ShowOff'... I love those variegated leaves! I'd love to find 'Iced Pink Flamingo'. I had a chance to get that one as well when I picked up this one, but we were on our way to the beach for a week or so at the time, and I was pushing my luck to try to keep even one plant happy while traveling!
I started making wish lists this afternoon. I'm finally feeling a bit better -- out of bed, onto the couch! -- so I'm hoping I can get around to some much needed repotting and planting soon!
Critter: So glad you are feeling better! I hope you continue to improve at a rapid rate and get your energy back! Just don't over do it, we don't want you to have a relapse!
I have been looking through some catalogs that have come in the mail and just placed a small order on the Caladium Co-op for some Caladium Bulbs and Tuberose!
We are going to be in the 80's this coming week and I have a lot of cleaning to do, both outside and in ... but will begin on the outside with the deck and back porch etc. I don't have to mow the lawn this week - since my husband has been off he did it for me the other day! He is going to work tomorrow, classes start Wednesday so he has some paperwork to take care of in gearing up for students! I wish he had done some weeding for me! I have a few beds that need to be totally cleared out to get the weeds! We have tons of weeds! Wish there was a product that would kill the weeds without killing the plants and flowers!
