Just curious what the longest MG "survival" rate is for anyone who has tried overwintering MG vines indoors without any expensive special lighting ? I've got five vines in an east facing window with a small spectrum light on them, but they've been attacked by bugs and I'm wondering how long they'll hang on. I've sprayed for the bugs but the vines look awful and I wonder if they'll recover....
Thanks,
Sandy
Longest survival rate indoors?
HI Sandy, I was wondering the same because this comming winter (10 short months from now), because I thought about needing to bring in some of the jmg, so hopefuly someone has had experiance and can help us. I wonder if you cut it back , so it could recover, and or sprout new from the roots? just a thought, I dont know if this is possable to do or not, but if it looks like a gonner, maybe it wouldnt hurt. Rose
I can't supply input here because I use grow-lights. Your best bet for keeping vines indoors under your described conditions would be the really hardy purpureas.
Sandy, a few of mine I tried to save only lasted a few months, the spider mites just took over. Finally had to trash them so they wouldn't infect some of my tropicals. I did cut back my turbina corymbosa and it bounced back but I am still fighting the bugs on that one.
I just started some new ones to get me through winter, hoping to see some flowers by mid march, just in time for the winter blues to melt away!!!
The Ipomoea nil that I have brought in to finish seed ripening don't usually last past mid December...same for I.hederacea,I.hederifolia,I.quamoclit,I.sloteri and Ipomoea tricolor...Two of my Ipomoea obscura are still barely holding out...
I trim off only the parts that died back on their own...Ipomoea nil are annuals and die completely after one flowering season even in very warm temperature zones...
I've had Ipomoea purpurea over-winter several times and I have several Ipomoea indica that are doing very well in a south facing window...

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm having trouble with bugs too. Has anyone ever tried systemic insecticide...like what you would use for roses?
Ron-wow, I didn't know the nils would die off regardless. So you're saying even if I try to keep these going till spring to put outside, they'll say bye-bye anyway?!
Thanks~
I used dish soap ( dont use antibacterial), listerene (or equilivant) in a 1 gal sprayer. filled with water, I didnt measure, but a good squirt of soap, and probably 1/2 a bottle of mouth wash. The whiteflys left in a hurry, and it didnt harm any of my plants. spray the undersideds of the leaves also. try it on one leaf first to makesure it doesnt harm your plants. Im sure someone on here may have a better reciepe but it worked for me. :0) Rose
Thanks for the info wizz47! I'm trying to come up with a way where I will not have to spray water all over, that's why I inquired about the systemic...
Thanks!
