I have looked through my old dmails with Snow to find the name of the mother who I think is a very large Oglevee. She just sent them because i wanted to try strep seeds. She didn't cross her plant with another one.........just opened the pods and sent me some seed. If I get curious enough I will spend the day and go back and find the mother's name.
A NEW Day of Gratitude and Love
Susan and Kim you are funny.
I don't care it they have a name. Come spring, I want to buy some. Maybe you can just nickname them for us and we will know what ones we are talking about here on DG . Come up with some pretty new nickname . Lou
WOW Did I ever miss a good day on this forum? Bad guys, nail polish ,algae water on carpet, did I leave anything out??? YES!!! CONGRATS KAREN!!!! I prayed if it was a good job for you, you'd get it! No job is perfect but I know it'll be a good fit!
Lin- your story reminded me of something that happened when our kids were young. My husband was outside playing with the kids when this man came up to him and asked if he'd mind driving him somewhere across town. My husband said sure (crazy idea). When he got back the police came by and asked if we'd seen the man around anywhere as he had escaped from the hospital nearby. YIKES! SO my husband had to confess that he'd driven the get-away car!! DOn't know if they ever found him.
Well where was I today you ask???? Doing my civic duty- JURY DUTY and yes I got picked for the panel so will be there again tomorrow! I'm getting over a cold or sinus infection or something and keep having coughing fits- well guess who had one during the trial today? How embarrassing was that??!!
You aren't the only clumsy ones- I knocked a Philo off a top shelf in a room Sunday and it dominoed all the way down each level taken others with it!
I will also be willing come spring to ship to anyone who wants if I have doubles... I may as well tell you all as I have email 3 people who have said they did not want me to share but I found a nice new friend who is willing to help me out.... One night I could not sleep... So I went looking at this and that and the next thing you know I bought 24 yes I said 24 Av. leaves of the yellow family.... Now as most will recall I use to say I HATE AV... Well guess what I am liking them more and more each day... So my new friend Diane (Dianejungle) is will to take allot of them off my hands as I can't grow that many... I think she almost had a cow when I told her how many I will be shipping her...LOL A nice cow that is.... Also I will be cutting up those pretty plants you have seen me post so she will be getting leaves off them also.... Then Kim(dimmer) is coming here to spend a few days with us and she also will be going home with plants... Gotta love them... :-) Do you know after looking to day and playing with my plants I dont have one strep... So I am hoping I don't kill them when I get some... Today I also put my new transplants on the heat mat for a few... I know I have been told not to do to the strep's but I did not know any better when I got these and I think they really liked the first week of heat that I gave them so I did it again... Also two of the Momma leafs looked so good I repotted them and hopefully she will have more babies for me...
Ok off to eat dinner then will try to come back after my bath...
I can dance now... Come on ladies lets dance... :-)
Hugs,
Susan
Yes I did just about have a cow! SO we're going to grow & learn together!!!
Everyone's had so much fun playing plants today ,I'm jealous! And I'll miss out again tomorrow. Hopefully the trial won't last any longer than that.
I think the first thing I'm going to do is take the Hoya cuttings - that don't want to seem to root!- out of my tray with the humidity dome and put the stolons from my Episcias in there and see what else I can propagate for that area. It's in a nice bright location and I think the Episcias will be happier there. The new light I bought for the terrarium they're in now just isn't very bright. It will be warmer in the new place too.
Then by the time they're rooted I be growing AV leaves from Susan in there! Can't wait!
I love ya' Susan ordering 24 plants or leaves!!! You've got the bug.........I am not even telling how many wedges of streps a friend on DG ordered from ebay for me. She found the site and dmailed me to show me the deal of the century.
But, I have a negative -2 rating so I can't go to ebay. I send her money by pay pal and then she orders for me. Now I am positive this 'addiction' is an 'illness' (LOL)
Let's have another picture of ????? maybe Rhubarb ?????
Diane, I saw your post of wanting to plant. You better get your soil ready because you and Susan should have gotten a package today that will keep you busy......
OO Gail- You know I like that Rhubarb-it's in the pink family!!!
I checked the mail when I got home but I had no mail whatsoever yet! Hopefully she's just running late today....
I love this family and you know what?
In reading everyone's posts today, I sit here with a feeling that we are all getting spring fever together! Isn't it wonderful?
I think even more than propagating my babies I am looking forward to sharing them too!
I know that no matter which one of you I send babies to will love and cherish them as much as I do and that is SUCH a wonderful feeling.
I am having so much fun growing them all for you guys *lol* I CAN'T WAIT until it's warm enough to start boxing them up :)
I know.....gotta let them get bigger first and let the 3 feet of snow outside melt first *lol* But I can't wait!
Huge Family Hug.......and now ......... The Electric Slide........
I've got to move,
Come let me take you on a party ride
And I'll teach you, teach you, teach you
I'll teach you the electric slide
XO Kim
We went to Marden's this weekend (an salvage kind of store here in Maine) and would you just look at what jumped into my cart for $2.99 (yes, $2.99 the WHOLE set). I thought they were the cutest little things! I could just picture sinningia's in them someday when I learn how to grow sinningia or something *lol*
I have a tiny tea cup at work and grow some type of thing I don't even know what it is in it. I know how careful to be with watering as there are no drainage holes in these but I think they would look SO cute at my desk!
Wow, I guess I am just partying with myself tonight.....
Do you come here often?
"why yes, yes I do"
Funny I haven't seen you before
"Well maybe you weren't in the right forum, I only hang out with the hip chics in the AV forum now"
Do you want to come to my house?
"Maybe.....but only if you have STREPS *lol*"
Do you mind that I wear boxers? *lol*
"Not if you don't mind me wearing a strep leaf" *lol*
OK, Enough of this partying with myself! It's sad, really it is *lol*

Hi Kim,
Everyone is getting ready for the Ohio State and LSU national title tonight, my friend.
Your strep babies look terrific and you are welcome to show them to us anytime. I am going to do a little planting tonight as I watch the game.
Soooooooo sorry that you are having to party by yourself. I love that conversation with yourself. Pajamas are my hang out clothes every day if I don't have to leave the house, so your boxers sound good to me.
Sally,
you just have a ton of suckering going on but I wouldn't try to remove them with a plant this big. I think you would just disfigure it if you tried. I try to catch those suckers when are less than 1/8" big.
They are pretty with suckering and extra crowns.........just enjoy it!
gail
Nope I am here for a few anyway..... So Kim boxers huh??? Nah I will wear the leaf... I sweat to much to wear much more...LOL You babies look just like you and by the way I can't stand you.... Your babies are growing so fast.... You know I am only kidding.... So did they grow from seed? I am getting Chirita seeds soon for my biggest looser prize and I can't wait ... A first for me with this kind of seeds... I also go so many AV. leaves so I could say One lived....LOLOLOL
My oldest son and Nadia (GD) stopped in before dinner and she got her ears pierced and Nana told her she was thrilled as now I can get her cool earrings.. I am also going to give her the earrings my husband Kevin bought me so many years ago as I can't wear posts... She is thrilled that they have diamonds in them... Mind you,you have to use a magnifing glass to find them but just the same... She also was looking at my rings and I told her which was hers when she got bigger and her little eyes almost popped out... Now those diamonds you can seee.....LOLOLOL I am not into diamonds and things of the such.... I got a white gold ring when we went to Hawaii in April 2006 and it is a turtle with a mother of pearl back... Now that is what I love.... my turtle is worn on my wedding finger so long as I am not at work as no rings of any kind go on my fingers.... One time I had a cat claw get stuck under my ring and I thought we were going to have to knock the cat out to get its nail out... Lesson learned...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
:) I am really laughing out loud Kim ... you are too cute! Having a party all by yourself, huh? Well, sometimes I guess we just have to make our own fun, right?!
Gail: Could the Strep seeds you got from Snowrose be 'Trumpeter Swan'?? Snow sent me some seeds of that one, they sprouted and were looking real cute even though tiny ... then died.
I'm having a not so good beginning to the New Year when it comes to plants. I have lost almost all of my AV's the past 3 weeks, and the little Gessie seedlings (seeds from Brazil, the ones I got from joining the Gesneriad Society and the Strep seeds Snow sent me.) Even a couple of Episcia's have suddenly died. I have no idea what is going on. I don't think it's cultural as I have been watering and feeding as I always have. I think I must have brought in some kind of bug or something ... probably when I began moving in a lot of stuff with that cold snap we had when temp's got down to the low 30's. I see no sign of anything but am not real sure of what to be looking for. No mealies, no webbing of any kind ... just dying plants. One day they all looked really pretty, then all of a sudden with the AV's the leaves looked a bit rusty in color and the plants completely collapsed. It looks like I'm going to have to take everything off the stands and thoroughly disinfect all containers and use some sort of insecticide or something on any remaining plants in hopes of saving them. The Chirita's look okay and some of the Episcia's are still alive. It makes me mad that I lost a couple of AV's that had been real favorites and I was really hoping I could grow the gessie seedlings to maturity - but oh well. I can't get too upset about it! I remember someone on the AV forum last year saying we should ALWAYS isolate any and all new plants which I have never done. So, this is a lesson I need to learn. I have been wanting to clean the house thoroughly and de-clutter so I guess there's no time like the present! Once I get cleaned and re-organized I will add a few new plants.
Ok, I am off to watch the football game with hubby! I don't really have a favorite, LSU or Ohio State but I see OSU is up 10-0.
Back to join the party later!
Sally: I think that AV is Gorgeous just the way it is. I hate butchering my plants and since I don't grow to show I just leave them to do their thing! If you aren't entering a plant in a show, you can just let it be big and full with as many crowns as it wants to grow! I don't think it causes any harm to the plant at all.
Lin,
I only have a couple of AV plants that you sent me but if you want them back, except the varigated one...Oh ok even that one I will ship when it stays warm... I will just take a leaf from them... Let me know as I know how it is to lose a special plant...
Huggers,
Susan
Oh Susan: No, absolutely not ... I would never ever ask for something back that I gave away! Not a plant or anything else! I am not really Ga Ga over AV's anyway, LOL ... I can take them or leave them! LOL. I didn't lose every AV I have. I still have one of those variegated pink noids and a couple of little variegated mini's that Gail gave me. And, AV Pow Wow is still alive along with Annabelle, Isabelle and a few standard noids. I really like Episcia's and Chirita's and have so many house plants - I think this was a "lesson" so to speak, letting me know I really, really need to downsize! I have waaay too many plants! I have so much cleaning I need to do - my Florida Room is wall to wall plants right now, piled everywhere, even on the love seat and chair! I just shoved stuff in there when our temps were dropping last week and it was already a mess out there. The back deck just outside the Fla Room is the same! The settee, both chairs and all the little tables are piled with plants (I covered them with blankets.) And, you can't move on the deck for all the plants sitting out there. I really need to get busy this week!
Hey Gail, who you rooting for in the game? Do you have a favorite? We don't really but are kinda rooting for OSU because we had a friend who taught with my husband for years - he died last year after a long, long fight with cancer. My husband just said he bets Jim is watching this game on a huge screen t.v. in heaven!
Hello Ladies,
Well I am off to bed here soon as I work tomorrow... I was wanting to ask are used pots ok to buy say from e-bay I need 2 1/2 inch and maybe 3 inch pots... I know someone told me where they got theres but I have been looking for the post for the past 1/2 hour and I can't find it... So I was just asking on what you all thought.
Hugs,
Susan
Susan: I don't see why you couldn't buy used pots ... just be sure to wash them in very hot, soapy water and rinse well before planting in them. Can you get them fairly cheap on e-bay? I ordered some small ones last year from either Rob's or Bluebirds. Here's the list for BB's pots with prices:
http://www.bluebirdgreenhouse.com/html/supply01.htm
and here's Rob's: http://www.robsviolet.com/supplies.htm
Kim- Sounds like you're like me, I'm always in the garden and no one will come out to play! Did you do your strep babies with seeds or leaves? Either way- great growing! ANd I am envious of the little teacup & teapot sets- and what a steal at 2.99??!!
Sally- I'm like the rest of us- your AV looks beautiful the way it is!
Lin-Sorry to hear about plant loss. Keep us posted if you eventually find the culprit!
Susan- How great to pass on your jewelry to your g-daughter! I gave my girls jewelry that was mine when they turned 16.
Thanks Lin,
I will look at the url's now... so far in ebay I found 2 3/4 -100 pots for 15 and that includes shipping
Susan
Susan-look under seller "gardenangel" she usually has some for sale on ebay. She sells AV's and such too. Lou
Kim: You are doing so great with your growing! Your methods look so professional! I need to take some notes from some of y'all!
Kim: I too love that little teacup & teapot set! Wow! Only $2.99? I remember last year hearing someone on another thread talk about that store called Mardens and it sounds like my kinda store! Sure wish we had them in Florida, it sounds like you can find some real bargains there! I have your name on one of the little micro mini sinningia's for spring shipment , if they survive the problems I seem to be having with plants right now! So far nothing in that room seems affected and I'm going to try to keep it that way ... The micro mini sinningia would look so cute in that little cup! OR the teapot! You could just plant it up in there and be real careful with watering, or you could use the teacup or pot as a reservoir and just sit the little potted sinningia in there. That way you could lift it out to empty any water.
I forgot to tell you Kim that since that lady in CC gave me that little cup and saucer with violet in it, I now look everywhere I go for cups and saucers to put avs in. That is one good buy you made!
Wow! I missed alot of posts this evening!
Thanks for all the kind words about my new job... I am very happy! Been doin' the happy dance all day.
If you've seen "Evan Almighty", you KNOW the one I'm talking about.
If you haven't, give this baby a try!

She's a blast from the past!
"Everybody dance now..."
I found Kim and Jill on You-Tube! *LOLOLOL*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mD7n3rkus0
I love you guys!
Karen
That is so cute on YOu Tube!!!!!!!!! Kim and Jill!
Very cute!
Lin, I forgot to tell you that we are all LSU fans! In this part of south Texas the majority of kids coming out high school go to UT Austin or Texas A&M. Having said that, there are lot who go to LSU. My son's girlfriend went to LSU as did her sister and she has two brothers and one sister there right now. A former high school sweetheart who lives here now also went to LSU.
OMG SO SO SO much to catch up on now *lol*
First....Karen....LOVED the U Tube. I must be the one in the red boxes and Jill must be the blonde? *lol* HOW FUNNY!
Karen, I am SO tickled about your job and I have been right there doing the happy dance with you, believe me. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for you.
Gail and anyone else that likes the teapot, I got the tea pot, cup and 1 saucer for $2.99. The other saucer had a chip so I asked the manager if I could have it and she said yes. I could go back (when I get paid Friday) and see if they have any sets left and put them aside for your boxes this spring if you'd all like :) Things go fast at Marden's. It's one of those places, if you don't buy it when you see it, it will be gone when you go back. I LOVE that store and have purchased some unique things for cheap there. I think they MAY still have a few sets on Friday though. I have 2 Marden's I could check for everyone. Sometimes one Marden's will carry something the other one doesn't have.
Thank you all for the compliments on my babies. I'm SO proud of them it isn't even funny. It's the first time I ever try something like this and it has been such an exciting project! I can't take the credit though, everything I learned, I learned here and it has truly been a trial and error thing. I grew my babies from leaves. I'm finding seeds to be VERY difficult for me. I have never really been able to grow seeds. I thought maybe having a light stand this winter would help but I'm still finding seeds to be quite difficult. Not just gessie seeds either but also perennial seeds. I do better just direct sowing outside in the spring and not giving a hoot what they do so I just plan to go out in the back yard this spring with a bag of seeds and throw them up in the air. Ta Da, a new air garden *lol* Not really, but close to that *lol*
I just bought 12 step leaves from the Garden Angel :) I just may have to order some pots from her sometime. I don't see that she has any pots right now though. What a nice lady. Here is a link to the leaves that I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=310011624346&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=021
I have decided to part with most of my plants this spring and only keep the ones that "touch me" so that I have room for more streps *lol*. I enjoy growing them the most and so far they are the ones that seem to be liking my environment the most. At first it was a real hit or miss thing. I was just doing AWFUL with streps. Great big, nice full plants were dying to 1 or 2 leaves and I just didn't think it was going to be a good thing for me. My episcia on the other hand were doing wonderful (they were still under domes) AND THEN, it all turned around for me. Streps seemed to start making a come back and now my episcia just sit there looking sad (they grew too large to put a dome over) so I'm thinking that in the long run, streps might just like it here in Maine. I'm totally OK with that *lol* I have never been one to really care for AV's. I do, however, feel bad when I go (this is January now) to Wal-Mart and see that they left a WHOLE SHIPMENT of AV's out to freeze to death. They are all black and rotted and Wal-Mart still has the full price ticket on them. Even though I am not an AV girl, it infuriates me to no end!! I think ANY plant being treated like that is totally WRONG! I have to say, we only have Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Home Depot for plants around here and of all 3 stores, I think Lowe's does the best job. At least when plants are "going by" Lowe's will put them on a 50% rack. Home Depot and Wal-Mart would rather throw them out. Angers me to no end. Anyways........
Susan, I am like you. The only ring I wear is my wedding band and diamond and one pinky ring (which will be my daughters some day). I don't get into jewelry much anymore. I have had the same earrings in for almost 2 years *lol* I NEVER take my rings off so my diamond is full of hand cream *lol*. Yeah, not much of a material girl. In fact, my first diamond........out in one of the gardens.........yep. Did I learn anything? Nope. Still garden with all my rings on. This time though if I lose the diamond, no biggie....one less ring to wear *lol* Been married 15 years now, don't need a diamond to say it's forever anymore *lol*
Well, gonna go check on all my plants this morning before work (morning routine). I hope you all have a wonderful day and I will try to check in periodically throughout the day from work *lol*
Kim
Kim, you are too nice but I enjoy finding cups and saucers so don't get me any of them........very nice of you to offer.
Stayed up waaaay too late and thinking about going back to bed after I check out where you got your strep leaves.
Good night
gail
Hi Ladies: I have been out on my back deck the past couple of hours, trying to get some cleaning done. Moving plants back outside I found this very dry Jewel Orchid amongst some plants inside in an East facing window and lookie what I see ... two buds!! I have had this plant for probably seven or eight years and it has NEVER bloomed for me! Last year I took a piece of it and planted it in the terrarium, not doing much and it's been in there almost a year! And, here I find this one all dried out and ready to bloom. Can't wait to see what it's gonna look like! At first I thought it was perhaps new leaves but upon closer inspection found it is indeed little buds!
Will post another pic when they open! I am embarrassed to post this pic - shows the neglect.
Wow! She is big and I can't wait to see her bloom. I have never known what soil to put one in. What do you have her in? It looks like a teak box.
LOL Gail, yep, it's one of those orchid boxes with nothing but long fiber spaghnum. I know, I know ... probably not the best growing medium but orchid bark just didn't seem to work for me - they seem to do much better in the spagh. I just need to water and fertilize!
I thought they just went into regular soil so you can see I know nothing! i saw one at Green Gate Nursery and hope to get one when I go back that way. The one I saw was in a hanging basket and was big.
BTW, that Miracle Grow liquid of 12-4-8 that Tapla recommended is doing wonders for the plants on my porch.
Gail, please don't go by how I have mine planted! It would probably be huge if it had the proper care!
How exciting to have buds! I've had orchids in the bark stuff, and gradually lose them. I'm down to just one now, and it just sits there, occasionally losing a leaf and getting a new one, but no sign of buds.
