Virtue's Reward

Patience is a virtue, is something my grandparents would say to us as children, and it is often the most rewarded virtue. It is certainly the most visible one.

In our world of instant meals, quick fixes and speed is of the essence lifestyles, it would seem that patience is a lost virtue. Not so, this is a great world with wonderful people and I would like the media to recognise the fact and stop being so pessimistic about the 'Human Condition'.

My own reward came this week. Nope not some great achievement, nor will I ever get recognition for it. It doesn't matter because I was chuffed to buttercups to find a tiny Trachycarpus fortunii (Chusan Palm) seedling waving its fan like leaf at me after 8 months of being planted. I always keep seed trays for about 18 months to 2 years, but tend to lose interest after 3 months and shelve them in the greenhouse.

Gardening is one of the many hobbies which have succumbed to the 'must have it now' lifestyle. Even the cultivar seeds we buy are designed to germinate quickly and uniformly, while some excellent garden plants are left behind due to their irratic germination and/or slow growth to flowering size.

So for those of you who can't wait, just remember that virtue is its own reward in the end ;)

True true. I tend to get very manic when the seeds I planted don't come up quick enough. Say 2 days LOL

Baa, patience is indeed a virtue, and it is one that any gardener needs to recognize. We spend hours on end from Feb. to Apr. getting our little darlings germinated and growing and hardening off. Our greatest reward is that first, long anticipated bloom....if not for patience many of the world's pleasures would be lost.

Baa, you are right. This was my first gardening season and I was truly the "impatient one". Now that I've actually seen what wonderful rewards a little time can bring I'm convinced patience is the rewarding virtue. I just hope I don't get impatient again next year - it's so easy to forget during the winter months when the dreams of next years garden fill your mind.
