My wish list for 2008 plants

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Flowerjunkie, do you plant them out in the spring or do you wait until fall?
BTW my cuttings I got from you are all doing well. I didn't loose a single one so far. The shrimp plant that I got was listed as not hardy in my zone. I am doing fine with it also. I just cover it on extra cold nights.

Mamajack, we could do a northtexas co-op and divide the plants at the ru. Then they would only have one shipping charge and no extra shipping stress. That might be more cost effective than double shipping all over the country.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

charlene, that's a good idea. i wouldn't mind buying some from an online source but i wouldn't want shipment until sept.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I bet others would like to do this also. When it gets close to Sept. let's start a thread so we can find out if there is interest among the others in our ru group.

I'm going to the nursery on Friday. She is doing her spring buy now. But doesn't know yet which echinacea's will be offered by her grower. I won't know until Friday. I will post what I find out on Friday, like prices, delivery time and availability. I think I'm getting excited about echinaceas all over again. I only have three different types. They all do well for me and I consider them a low maintenance plant. It would be nice to get one of each for contrast.

Does anyone grow the E. White Swan? I'm interested in that one as well as the newer ones.

Daisy

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

daisy, i might have some white swan this year so get back to me later. and i will be waiting to hear what you can find down there.

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6a)

I have been watching this thread. I would be very interested. Please let me know if someone does this.

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6a)

Im sorry we posted at the same time, I was talking about a co-op.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i knew that kelbo as your post was clear. the best way for you to keep up with this is for you to just watch this thread and/or the co-op forum.

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6a)

Ok Mamajack, Thank you I will. Kel

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My nursery friend has sent her grower a fax with my entire list of coneflowers (about 10) and she should have prices to me any day. She, like many others will get plugs, pot them up and keep them growing in the greenhouse until ready. She will give me prices for 4" pots and I can pick them up since I live within 1/2 mile of her nursery. Then shipping will only be directly to each of you.

After I get info I"ll post what I know and see if there's interest in a co-op with her. Or if someone else comes up with one too - I'll be ordering too.

Hi Kathy.

Whoever ends up doing a coop, fair warning, I think you are going to be totally overwhelemd! LOL. Everyone I talk to wants these.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Cathy - honey - you are going to be helping me IF I do one.....I would probably have some limits because of this reason. I couldn't handle 500 plants. And I bet it would be every bit of that.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

charlenesplants

I planted the ones I got 5 years ago in the spring. This was the common echinacea that I traded someone on Dave's for. I planted Razzmatazz last spring and Double Decker last fall.

Glad the brugs and spring plant are doing well for you. My shrimp plants are out doors. Every fall I take as many tip cuttings as I can put in a gallon pot for freeze insurance. If my spring plant comes back I can always find someone that wants the rooted cuttings.

mamajack,

I am interested in your e. white swan, if I don't get it from the nursery. Thanks for the offer.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

flowerjunkie, i will remember to see what i can trade.

shihtzumom....i will be waiting for your info. as well.

(Cathy), MO

I would be more than happy to help Kathy. Tickled pink, really! Whatever you need. That would mean we are getting the plants I want so bad! :-)

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

Oh my, I have been watching this thread , just hoping, if it happens can I be included?

I have also started some from seed and will probably have more than I want if they sprout and would be more than willing to share!

I seeded White Swan and Echinacea pallida...so far and am looking for more to sow.

Hoping for a go with this coop and that there is a space saved for me, Carla

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Hey Carla,

I have seeds of razzmatazz. How you start them?

Daisy

Buckeye, AZ(Zone 9a)

I wrap them in a moist paper towel and place in a plastic zip bag in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. Pull them out and plant them 1/8th" deep in seed mix in a sunny window some are under a mini greenhouse and others are not, do not let the soil dry out, I always water from the bottom too.
If you need more info just holler!

Anxiously waiting,
Carla

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Carla,

I'm going to try that to see if I can do it.

Has anyone got anymore info on finding a good deal on echineceas? The nursery I was going to called me and asked that I come next week instead of this Friday. :-(

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Our Sam's had some a few weeks ago. Boxes of all kinds of bulbs and such. I'm pretty sure that there were some Echineceas as well.

Anne

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Gosh,

I'm not a Sam's member. :-(

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll try to get by there on Fri and see if ours has any left. The second time that I went the selection was greatly diminished. I got Agapanthus and some Dahlias

Anne

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I got their catalog the other day and there was an aweful lot of echinacea varieties inthere, some didn't have prices like they were going to be there soon but not yet.

coconut lime was there, and green envy which is one that I want. Anything green I love.

kathy

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry no Echinacea left. Lots of other things but not that. Sorry.

Anne

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

shihtzumom,

Its all you for the co-op!!! My nursery friend couldn't do better than 3/26.50 on E. Jade and 3/34.50 on E. Green Envy...PLUS SHIPPING! I can't pay that kind of money.

So can't wait to see if this co-op is a go. I wish I could help you but I'm way down here by Houston!

O.K. Thanks

Getting excited here!!

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

shihtzumom...i always have to look back at your name when i type that. that "htz" combo throws me every time. lol

if you strike out with your friend would you consider terra nova nursery. i think you have to buy in trays of 72 or something like that. they are plugs. plants with plant tags and shipping included would run around 4-5 bucks a plant. i have received plants from terra nova. root systems are excellent. i recently bought 3 of the newer echinacea for around 12.00. add shipping to me...around 20.00.

Has anyone checked this place out? Not as much in the selection of Echinaceas but the price seems very good.

::jumping in here::

Barb, I participated in the TNN coops a couple of years ago that turned out to be a fiasco for so many. I got my plants, though, in good condition. But, they were REALLY tiny little plugs. And, you know, that's what TNN sells, but I just didn't realize how tiny they'd be. I got 16 plants (in July). Two years later, I have ONE still surviving--barely. Most didn't make it till the end of the month.

One of my orders was a Razzmatazz. I have a big bed of coneflowers that run rampant. So I figured conditions were right and it would fit right in. It lasted, um, about 3 weeks.

Terra Nova is THE best place in the world to get some things. (Their heucheras are to die for!) I might participate in a coop in the very early spring, before it gets too hot. Or late fall. But any later in the year, well, IMO, their plugs are just not big enough to survive Texas heat.

Kelboindy, I have ordered a couple of times from American Meadows. I've only ordered bulbs and seeds, not plants, so I can't speak for their plant shipping or prices. But I've been very happy with their service. We made a large seed (promotional) order from there, and mistakenly ordered the wrong seed packets, and they were great about replacing them.

Has anyone checked out Sooner Plant Farm? I don't know what kind of echinaceas they have, but the plants I've ordered from them have all been huge, gorgeous, and perfectly packed. On the pricey side (about like Lazy S). But they're proud of their GW rating, and might make a good deal for a coop.

I've never been dissapointed from TNN plants. Their small yes, but that's why wholesalers can get them at the prices they do. If their packed right when shipped out to us then they should do well. Their usually always very well rooted plugs, Most plant coops are small sized plants anyways.

My two cents..

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

One thing with getting echinaceas from TNN they need to go into the ground asap. I have lost some in coops but only the ones I kept in the pots through the winter in the greenhouse. Small ones I've planted outside before frost have come back for me the next spring.

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm in talks with another member right now to see if we can put together a buy from one company for plugs and have him care for them until they are good size to co-op. Then we will have this problem solved without all of us getting these little plugs and not having a greenhouse or facility to care for them.

I'm going to stop watching this thread for a few days because I have 2 co-ops that need my attention now. But we will have some data for you in a week or so.

OOOO if this does happen I am in heaven-echinacea are 1 of my fave things (heucheras the other)!!! I would love to get in on a co-op for them!!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My connection won't work - she just obtained a protective order against her husband. She will be filing for divorce - FINALLY. He's choked, beat, and verbally abused her for years and 1 of her 3 sons - he actually punches the 12 yr old with his fist. So - I don't want to add pressure to her, she has enough.

I do want to participate if anyone finds a source.

Good for her will addher to my prayer list.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Did anyone ever contact TNN???

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh, what a Bas!!@&. I feel bad for her. Im glad she is getting out of that situation, too many women stay too long in it!! Ive been there and done that! I understand why they stay too, Its wierd, but it makes sense too in a twisted way. I hope she follows thru with the divorce and he goes to H E double hockey sticks!! I will say a prayer for her to have strength thru this!!
