Kentucky anyone?

Janet, Our gilts starting nesting last night...we figured with the cold that we'd be having pigs anytime soon. It almost always seems to work that way. Quite cold here this a.m. Hubby brought a cow down to Boone's this a.m. and said the roads were terrible. HE had to go in 4 wheel drive as he couldn't make some of the hills with the trailer. HE left me home in dreamland and just called and said he was glad. I would've been a basket case. I guess they called off school here in Meade County. But doesn't it look pretty with everything white.

I think Shelby County is beautiful, but you are right about it becoming urban to Louisville. My son lives and works at Jim Beam in Frankfort. He actually looked at some places in Shelby County. We have good friends that live in Bagdad. :)

Meade County is another place that is up and coming. Because there is still farmland here to find and we haven't done a lot of the urban sprawl yet....we are still a looking good community. The interstate is coming through here and my farmers market will be right on the interstate. I don't know if this will be good or bad....They've been doing construction on the bypass for 2 years.

But we love living here because we are so close to so much, yet far enough away, if that makes sense.

How did the market in Frankfort go? We are still going to Louisville every other Saturday with meats and eggs and we still have winter squash that we stored up...butternut, acorn, etc.

Have a great day and enjoy this weather, if you can.

:) Blessings, Kathy

Hey Kathy, the only way I enjoy this weather is if I don't have to step foot outside. Second oldest daughter came in last night and finally decided that it was really, really cold out on the feeding run last night. Right now we're going through 4 of those 3X4X8 bales and 20, 5 gallon buckets of feed a day and you'd think by the way those critters act that we were starving them to death.

Frankfort market was, as far as I was concerned, very good this year, even with the drought. I watered as much as I could. I couldn't get water to the late cabbage and broccoli so that was a major crop failure but the turnips and greens did well. Winter squash tried really hard but without water they were pretty much no go too. I'm thinking about setting up drip irrigation for next year.

Actually I was ready for market to end. Our last day was the weekend before Thanksgiving and I was so totally ready for a little sit down time. I took the microprocessing class and am getting recipes ready to submit to Frankfort so I can have that up and running next summer. This should hopefully be the last summer that do market and work full time too. We shall see. I've been using the off time to update the website, get some postcards and rack cards for the daylilies printed up and work on home processing labels.

Had a little scare over the weekend. My biggest freezer, just 10 months old, went belly up. It was about half full of tomatoes and blackberries that I'll be using for next summers sales. Had to scramble to get stuff moved around in the other two freezers and my MIL's freezer to find room. Ended up taking some of the stuff to the neighbors for them to babysit. Now to get the manufacturer to honor the warranty and get the darned thing fixed!

Kydaylilylady, Started out with Reg Polled Hereford, now Polled Hereford/ Angus cross here or black or red Baldies if you prefer. We let our cows dry up for a year this year and are going to put a new bull out with them the first part of May. The bull is one of the twin bulls from the Polled Hereford side and we've sold all but one Hereford cow and kept the Angus cows for him to cover, the one Hereford that's left still has a calf on her and when we wean the calf we'll sell the cow. We'll have 3 steers to butcher in the fall for ourselves and our beef customers. We won't have any calves this spring but that's alright we need a VACATION! LOL! We'll just have the 4 cows and bull to feed this coming fall and winter, maybe we'll be able to go Steelhead fishing again!

I know what you mean about growth, Deschutes County is the fastest growing County in the State. The homes are (uh were) selling for $400,000 and up and I mean UP like $1,000,000+, and the acreage around here is crazy, starting at $20,000 and sometimes all the way up to $60,000 depending on the location.

Well, Janet, I HAVE NOT stepped outside........I'm letting DH do all the stepping today....ha, ha. I'm going to take down these Christmas decorations and maybe make a cake to warm up the house a little more....or maybe some chocolate chip cookies. I'm being very lazy right now. ha, ha.

I was ready for market to be over, but then I really liked it that people still wanted to buy....so, we continue the march. Actually we do very well with meat sales in the winter. People have been waiting for a while for beef, but this was the earliest we could get it in with the deer season just behind us. I think he should designate one or two days a week during deer season for his customers that keep him going all year with beef, pork, and lamb....but that's just my opinion. I might just recommend that to him. But I think the biggest thing is the freezer room and mixing both the beef and deer. I will have many happy campers in a few weeks. We won't hang it as long as we'd like to, but the natives are getting restless.. and I want some beef. We don't buy meat, just eat ours.

Yes, despite the drought, we had a fairly decent fall and many have commented how successful our CSA was despite the lousy weather. We lost things as well, but grateful that we could irrigate. Our pond was getting pretty low when God opened up the heavens and let it rip....finally.

Now, look at all the rain we've had. It's feast or famine. Oh well. Wouldn't it be great to have a big storage tank to hold all that rain water and not let it evaporate for the spring/summer drought...

Have a great day....and watch the snow from the comfort of your home.

WHY DID YOU HAVE TO POST YOUR WEB SITE! My kids go to their mothers in Georgetown and you are just down the road. My partner is going to kill me for finding a daylily farm so close. I will be selling everything in the house on ebay to support my buying at your farm. The site is beautiful. I can't wait to come see your place and I may have to sneak my check book behind my partners back, so play it cool. LOL! Maybe I should send you a private dmail or contact you from your site. The admin rules sometimes are "fuzzy" for me.

Misty I will be seeing you also. I grew up on a farm and we raised all our own meats and veggies. Your web site is bookmarked also.

George, you were supposed to just look at the farm pictures, not the flower pictures! You just come on down this summer. Hopefully we'll be moved in the house up there by then and even if we aren't we'll have a jug of iced tea sitting around and a bunch of chairs and we'll have a nice visit.

Bwa ha ha! Not look at the flower pictures! I did too. I had to quickly shut down before I got into trouble. ;)

Kathy, you should check todays greenfield recorder online if you read this. There is a interesting story regarding the bridge of flowers you might like to read :)

Too cool. Wonder how the poor thing ended up in Shelburne Falls. :(

Hey I just found out that my BIL works as a supervisor at a factory in Deerfield that makes plastic containers...I don't know the name of it.

Also, I just booked my flight to go to MA from the 21st to the 29th of Feb. My mother's 80th is the 19th and I have a grandbaby coming to this world on the 15th, so wanted to wait a week after he/she arrives. We will do something for Mom's bday on the 23rd or 24th. Any chance you can get to Hinsdale? I won't have a car :( If my Sister-In-Law has a day off, I might be able to get her to drive to Northhampton for lunch or something. Can we work out something to meet?

Email me at my regular email addy. :)

:) Kathy
