FYI: I just put a few things in my Diary. Yep figured it out Well I just looked around. They should be good for a laugh or two:) You will also under stand why I didn't become a brain surgeon!!!
Mid-Atlantic Roll Call
Bubbs, Just read your Diary, What a Hoot!!! Did you really trim the house with a chair saw? I wonder if I'll do the same with the cordless reciprocating saw that my hubby bought, he said I could use it to thin out my lilac next to the house 8 ^ ) .
Thanks for the afternoon laugh!
Chris
Chris, I used Ric's cordless reciprocating saw when I limbed up the corners of my Juniper hedge. It's huge and had overgrown the driveway. I decided to limb it back just at the corners to keep open the drive way and to expand the view up and down the lane as we pull out. I was very pleased with the look. You can see the pretty limbs and I will put in nice small shade gardens on the corners. Already have some hosta and hellebore's planted in there.
Bubbs, Ric does some of his best fine carpentry with his chain saw. LOL
HollyAnn, That is a serious looking juniper hedge. Looks like you did a great job with it. Some guys are great with chain saws, however not me . Ric is one of those talented ones.
Chris, I was cutting limbs from a tree and slipped on some wet leaves. Glad you got a good laugh from the diary. I laugh at myself all the time.
Bubbs, It is a serious Juniper hedge, It was one of the first things planted here more than 30 years ago. Just little gallon pots back then. It runs most of the way down one of the property lines between the yard and the dirt lane. It's probably 12ft high and 12ft wide. Not sure how long maybe 75ft or more. I only limbed up the corners and the neighbors children and my grandson love to crawl back in there to play. The rest of the hedge is green from the ground up.
HollyAnn: I do hope you'll host a swap one of these years -- I'd love to see your gardens!
HollyAnn, That is super serious! Wow! I would not even attempt to go in there with a saw of any type , Hell I'd probably kill myself:) It is evident that you are a trail blazer.:)
Happy, Ric and I talked about it last year after leaving Harts. We would very much love to host a swap. After we get the new stonewall up the next really big project is the pond in the back yard. We are hoping to start that that in July. Once that is in place we can really go to town on the flower beds in the back yard.
Hooray!
Yep, I would love to see your place too Holly.. You all sure keep busy up there.
Ruby
For those that didn't know...we're planning a get together here in a few weeks...loved to see everyone: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/833268/
I was thinking along the lines of next spring.
I'm hoping to do a fall gathering here again! With a little luck, I'll get myself and my gardens (in that order LOL) into better shape this summer. I'd love to go up to Holly's place... I can't imagine her yard getting much prettier!
Sounds good!!!
Ruby
Holly, count me in. I live close. LOL
HollyAnn, I'm interested for next spring. Still a ways away for me, any motels around you and golf courses?
Chris
Yes Chris, B&B's, Hotels, Golf Courses (quite a few).
who golfs? DH would come with me if he could spend part of the day golfing... :-)
Ladygardeners hubby is the golf fan. I am sure that she will fill you in when she see this.
Ruby
OK guys, We are talking about next spring not this one. LOL I promise to start a thread next March about it.
Jill, Ruby is right, Hubby Paul would rather golf then get stuck hearing us gab about plants and gardens.
So, I'm sure he would have no problem next spring going if golfing was an option.
Holly I'll be looking for the thread next March 2009 !!
(Mental note: start seedlings early for Trade)
Chris
Woohooo! Jim and Paul can hit the golf course together... Jim tries very hard to be accommodating, and he is a sociable guy, but he can only take so much plant talk before his eyes glaze over!
I just found this thread and this is my 2nd DG post after lurking about quietly soaking up info for a year ....
Name: Mandy
Location: Leesburg, VA, but grew up in the Upper Valley area of VT (still have family there), lived in central NJ for a while and visit in-laws there often, and lived in Chicago burbs for a few years
Family: DH of 10 years, 3 boys (10, 8, 4), 2 small rescued dogs (a corgi-jack russell mix, a toy fox terrier mix)
Employment: stay at home mom, former tech writer
Gardening Level: beginning, though all my neighbors think I know much more than I think I do
Gardening Focus: Figuring out how to make my little suburban yard accomodate the plants I like (peonies are my fave, clematis are growing on me - pun intended - and anything else I take a shine to), learning more about native plants, xeriscaping, and minimizing watering needs.
Welcome Mandy, I know what you mean about the neighbors, I don't know near as much about plants as my friends think I do. LOL
Someone (I can't find the post) said that we always feel less experienced than we are because "We know what we don't know."
I wish I could remember who posted that, I just loved it.
Holly - That sounds very George Bush-ish (or was it Cheney?) with known unknowns and the unknown unknowns. Oh - no - wait: thanks be to google http://www.slate.com/id/2081042/ it was Rumsfeld:
The Unknown
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

(I'm really not *that* political, BTW)
Yep, I remember that speech. LOL
To know or not to know that is the question...
Friends, Romans, Gardeners...lend me your hands...
Ok...I'm done now...what? Is that a sigh of relief that I hear? LOL
Big ole welcome, Mandy!!!
Welcome, Mandy! If you haven't found your way over to the co-op forum yet, you might want to take a gander at the peony co-op that's forming ("interest" thread currently posted; we're waiting on a list of varieties for the actual co-op). I just put in some peonies last year, so I'm not sure how many more I'll have room for, but there are some really scrumptious varieties on that web site and some very nice discounts being discussed, even after all shipping charges...
Welcome Mandy, where in central Jersey are your relatives? That's where I am!
Welcome Mandy.
Ruby
McKinne, you sure that wasn't "Al Gore" saying that? LOLOL. Whoever it was, they were speaking "in tongues" like a true politian.
Thanks all for the big welcome!
Flowerjen, the in-laws are in Bridgewater & Franklin Park. I lived in Stockton for a year (beautiful!) and my husband & I lived in Ringoes for a year before getting an apt. in Bridgewater closer to work. We still drive the backroads from Bridgewater to Bucks Co. PA instead of taking 202 - so beautiful.
Critterologist, thank you for the tip-off on the co-op forum; I will definitely surf on over to it.
Mandy, We have friends that live in Stockton. My grandparents had a farm in Baptistown. My dad used hang out in Frenchtown when he was a teen. LOVE the ride up the Delaware.
I've been lurking around here for a year or so, too, and just posting every now and then. I guess it's probably time for a real introduction.
Name: Joya
Location: Laurel, Delaware
Family: My husband, Dan, and our 16 month old son, Nathan
Employment: Mommy!
Gardening level: I don't know... I've been gardening for about 10 years now and have worked in the nursery business, but I still feel like I'm learning new things every single day. I hope it's always like that!
Gardening focus: Uh, focus? I think I have gardening ADD. When I lived in Hawaii I was into orchids and trying to get roses to grow there. Then, when I moved back here, it was antique roses for awhile. When I was living in an apartment, it was trying to get vegetables (and roses!) to grow on the balcony. Now, I guess it's mostly vegetables... and tropicals... and xeriscape plants for the landscape... oh, and edible landscaping... and roses! And anything and everything else. I don't think it's possible for me to focus on anything!
Oh Kubileya - You make me chuckle. I can so identify with what you just typed. Focus is not a word that would describe me in any sort of way. I feel a kinship already. Aaaahhhhh.....you mention Hawaii. Oh, to have been fortunate enough to have lived there in this life. Would you mind sharing how and why you lived there and how long?
So glad that you decided to post. Would love to hear more stories of Hawaii.
Ruby
Welcome Joya, what a diff Delaware is from Hawaii, huh?
Welcome Joya,
Gardening ADD, huh. Gotta love it!!! My DH accuses my of that, to which I reply, "If I didn't have to do ALL THIS BY MYSELF" I might be able to focus a little bit. His MOTHER (whom I adore, really) wasn't still working and trying to do all the gardening when she was my age!!!) You are just up the road from me, I live in VA right off of Rt 13. We are having a plant swap in Accomack at Jody's on June 7th, check it out. Again, welcome. Pam
Thanks for the welcome!
Ruby, I lived in Hawaii from '95 to '02. I was stationed there for the first five years (Navy) and then worked in Waikiki for the next two. I lived in Pearl City, Makakilo, and Waikiki. Sadly, I never got the chance to visit any island other than Oahu while I was there. It's a beautiful place and it was great to be able to spend some time there, but I was raised here in Delaware, and I guess it really is home for me.
I'm definitely going to try to make the plant swap June 7th. I don't have a whole lot in the way of plants right now, but I did offer to bring brownies!
I have just found this forum. Guess it's been right there in plain view, but I've been so busy trying to get questions answered that I just didn't see this one.

Welcome Anna! I live in South Boston but am in Danville quite a bit for shopping and dining out. The Lowe's in Danville has a better variety of plants than the one in South Boston, not to mention I love Joe & Mimmas restaurant!
