my favorite way::::::::

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

to re pot a hoya!!!! For quite some time I found it near about impossible to re pot some of my larger hoya plants when they became extremely root bound. The problem wasn't in finding a pot large enough or the right soil mix,it was getting the space between the root ball and the plant filled back in properly with soil when you have a plant that is so large it makes it difficult to put any dirt back into the pot.

So one day while re potting a plant my eyes fell upon an empty wal-mart bag that I had left in the gh.A little light came on and said why don't you slip the bag over the plant and let the root ball drop through the bottom of the bag!!!! So I did and now when I have a plant such as the one in the picture that could have and would have made re potting difficult this is the method that I use to pot it up into it's new home.

The plant in the pic is H. kentiana and got moved from an 8"basket to a 10"basket today with zero problems and no harm to the plant.

Thanks for the tip as I am faced with the "potting on" situation very soon.

Great idea ! Thanks for sharing!

That is so neat but I am sure if there is only one way to screw it up in the process I would!!

GREAT system, David...thanks for sharing!!! I am constantly wishing for 8 more arms!!!

Carol

and Merry Christmas!!!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Merry Christmas to everyone, hopefully it'll be a great day for everyone weather wise!!!!! The high for today and tomorrow is supposed to be 60 & 61 . Doesn't feel much like Christmas but I guess it'll have to do!!!!

I came up with this idea of re potting my larger, longer hoyas like this after breaking off a ton of vines from some of them trying to get them into new pots and only having 2 hands to do it with. Don't know why I didn't think of doing this a long time ago but hey, better late than never!!!

I find it much easier to re attach the hangers to the basket like this as well and the plant just falls right back into place when you cut the bag off.

Great idea, David, thanks for sharing!

David, I have a long way to go before I have that problem, but I am saving that idea in my hoya info page. It's a great idea, not just for large hoya but any large hanging plant. Thanks for being so smart!!!!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

My eyes aren't what they used to be, but I think I'm seeing it right. Did you take it out of the pot, drop it into the bag and cut a hole in the bottom of the bag for the root ball to fall through? I have two large K. Queens I need to repot soon and that sure will make it a lot easier to do! Wonderful idea. I really hate repotting something like a vine that has lots of branches and I'm trying to fill in with new soil! I usually end up breaking off branches and having a huge mess with soil everywhere. Thank you for this great invention!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

That's exactly what did!!!! You shouldn't have any problems potting up those KQ's using this method!

(Zone 1)

Thank You so much! I sure appreciate this great idea you came up with! It will really come in handy, not only with the hoya's but with other large hanging plants as well!

Today I was looking for fittonias for terrariums and look what was screaming at me, "Buy me!"

I have never heard of this name Hoya "Bilobata" or Hoya tsangii
It has long whatever they are called (tendrils?) with peduncles all over them. This is a 8" basket.

Nice find Gail. It looks to be one of the Exotic Angel plants but it doesn't look like bilobata to me. Looks sorta like DS-70 which I have seen labeled as tsangii and I don't know if they are one and the same. The more I look at it, it looks sorta like the H. nummularioides but I can't tell for sure Do the leaves on it feel kinda furry/soft? .Can you post another photo? Maybe you will have blooms soon!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Let me go get it off the porch and take a picture inside, Lin. Be right back.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

see how thin the leaves are. This is the backside of a leaf. The look real cushy from the front but they are not very fleshy at all.

this picture makes the leaves look real fleshy????

I have the bilobata which is an EA. Someone on here somwhere recently told me it was actually DS-70

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just asked Carol to jump over to this thread but I see that both of you are calling it DS-70....thanks

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Classic EA.... I've seen plants that had tags in them that were not even in the same genus as what they were!!!

(Zone 1)

Looks familiar and looks very healthy but I'm not sure which plant it is. Mine are outside and it's dark or I would go look to see if it's like my DS-70.

Ok, I just went outside and brought a couple of them in. Your plant pictured looks like a small basket I have that is labeled: I am Hoya "Bilobata" Hoya tsangii - but this is an Exotic Angel plant and I doubt the name on the label ... most of the time they are not correct. It's a plant I got last week at Home Depot.

We are supposed to have 46 or 47 degrees tomorrow night and highs in the 60's on Friday so I will be bringing a lot of stuff indoors again for one night anyway! Temp's are supposed to be back to 81 on Saturday with lows in the mid 60's. I sure hate the back and forth but will put up with it. Better that than having freezing cold temp's! I can't complain at all when I see what folks up north are having to endure with awful winter weather.

Here's a picture I just took of my plant that looks like yours:

If it was me saying it was DS-70, I shouldn't have said it since I don't know what I am talking about when it comes to hoyas! I have a few but don't even know if mine are all labeled correctly! I just don't trust the Exotic Angel labels. Here's a pic of mine that I thought I had labeled DS-70 after someone ID'd it for me but the label is missing so I'm not sure! This one has been blooming for months. The first time it bloomed I thought it was kinda a musty smell. Then I thought it kinda smelled like soap. I didn't like the fragrance at first but it has grown on me.

Here's the whole plant, I will try to get a close up of the flowers in a minute.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Could you say the fragrance is 'buttered popcorn'....or ButterScotch????? if so, then it is DS-70 I would say.

(Zone 1)

Yes! Yes! That 's it ... butterscotch/buttered popcorn! Definitely!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks everyone as yours looks exactly like mine only 5 times the size *lol*

(Zone 1)

Ok, I asked my husband and he thinks it smells like butterscotch too. So I am making a label right now for this so I will remember that it is the DS-70. I know I had it labeled but have no clue where the little plastic marker went. This time I am marking it on the pot!

Oh, Lin, I love those blooms and the fragrance. Can't wait until it blooms.

(Zone 1)

Now Gail, please, please don't go by what I say! I am even confusing myself at this point. I do think your plant as well as the little basket in my photo that are labeled bilobata are actually DS-70. I have another plant that I got last year and it was ID'd on here as Bilobata and the leaves look like this: http://www.sitascorner.se/bilobata.htm

I am confusing myself with each passing minute. I uploaded pic's to PF of Hoya brevialata recently and now am thinking I uploaded the wrong pic's. I hope if I did that someone will tell me so I can have Admin. remove them.

Ok, please Carol ... and any other pro's with these plants - can you check and tell me if I've put the correct pictures in PF for brevialata? It's looking more to me like the DS-70. I think I need to get all of my hoyas together and take pic's of all of them side by side and make sure they all get labeled correctly at some point! I am getting so old! And, I am tired so I'm quitting now! LOL. Night all!

Here's my entry in PF for H. brevialata: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/175485/

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

i think both photos look the same to me Lin! I stay confused about hoyas *lol*

The pic in the files looks different than the ones you took pictures of? Oh well, It isn't that important to me as I will forget anyway..

Lin...do you know Christina's site www.myhoyas.com ? She has wonderful photos of leaves, flowers and growth of the plant for you to compare. In the end, it is ultimately YOUR job to confirm your id comparing your flowers (get a magnifying glass) to flowers in the pictures. There are few hoyas that can cause confustion...most are fairly straightforward. Don't go by color: go by the shape of the corona, and the corolla...hairy/fuzzy or not...

(Zone 1)

Carol, Thank you for that link! I have seen that site in the past but couldn't remember the name of it. I am bookmarking it right now!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I will bookmark it now, too. Thanks
