Tropicals Hardy to Zone 6?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all, I was just curious if there are any Tropicals that are hardy for my Zone 6 area? I have fallen in love with Brugs, and have some cuttings now thanks to a couple of generous DGer's! But would be interested to know if there are any that I could plant that would survive our weather, or if there are some that could be potted and survive in an unheated/unattached garage? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice!

misty, I don't have your answer but maybe someone on the brugs forum would.
Might post there as well and get double coverage. Good luck.

Thanks Lou, I am looking for anything tropical and not sure what all threads I should try? I know I love Brugs, but not sure if any would be hardy for here. Thanks again! :)

Aloha Misty! - I don't think Brugs would be able to do very well outside during your winter temps. I believe most people in your zone bring them inside or put them in a garage to force them to go dormant....

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks BHM! My brugs are in the green house awaiting Spring! :) I have Hardy Banana, which are now doing well, but would love some other 'tropicals' that are hardy as well. :)

I think TM was talking about having Elephant Ears still out in the garden if I am not mistaken. Got you down for brugs in the spring, let me know when it's warm enough to send...

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I will have to see if I can find it again, but I was sure that was what I had read? It won't be warm soon enough for me! LOL
Gonna go see if I can find that again.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

WOW, I found it! LOL

Oh they are too precious for words! Looks like they are very new born in the photos. Are you keeping them? What type of dog are they - there're too small to tell!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

They were born on the 14th, so only 3 days old! They are what I am calling Puddle, cause I can, LOL. Technically they are Pugapoos. Daddy is a white Min. Poodle, and Mommy is a black Pug. Right now they look more like Mommy, but seem to have Daddy's nose, which is good, cause you sometimes have to have a Pugs nose clipped to assist with their nasal passage. I was amazed at how fat he was when I was holding him tonight, he is our little piggy! We hadn't planned to keep them, but DH came home the other morning and looked me straight faced and said, "Since theres only two I guess we will keep em!"

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

I just love your puddles! So glad you are keeping them! Just wait till the other guys (who are all asleep by now) see them!
G'night!

They are so loving, it would have been too hard to let them go! I think sleep is what I am gonna have to do soon, too! Sis says she is ready to go to bed, finally, and it is almost 1AM!
Night Night!

mistygardener,

If you are still interested in "tropicals" google Acca/Feijoa Sellowiana.
That should do ok in a pot with a little help (read-PROTECTION). It will never grow upright in zone 6, but it's worth a shot.
Also, some Gardenias are listed as hardy in zone 7. In a pot who knows.

Good luck

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

thanks germinater, I will check it out! :)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

they are both beautiful! I think I have a real bad itch for Spring!!!!!!!

(Zone 9a)

Maybe so, but you really should get some sleep this winter. :)))

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Yes, I suppose you are right! LOL

There is a jasmine that is hardy to zone 6 and can also be grown in zone 5 with lots of mulch called Margarita. It is a carolina jessamine. We have it at work and I currently have a young one.

There are frost hardy gardenias also that I think I have heard of being grown in MO. I am gonna try it next year with lots of mulch.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Now you tell me! LOL I just sent someone my Carolina Jessamine seeds! LOL I don't think I have any gardenia seeds, so maybe I will get lucky and have some soon! :)
I do have an established Carolina Jasmine, and a Pink Jasmine, but they say they are hardy to 20 degrees, and when we dipped below that they started to look a bit puny, even with all the mulch and leaves and other shelter. I just hope they come out of it. :)

Thanks pepper! Those are both beautiful and maybe some day I will get lucky enough to have them!! I don't believe that is the jessamine I had. :)

Next year if it gets big enough I will take a few cuttings off it for you and dellrose.

The gardenia I hope to be able to buy a small one this spring. Just gotta find the perfect place for it first. If it suceeds here I am gonna recommend it at work. And to all of us non tropical folks. :~)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

That would be awesome, Pepper! :)

they are growing up way too fast! :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

you could try a needle palm rhapidophyllum hysterix or sabal minor or even trachycarpus

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

needle palm I understood, but the others are just too much! LOL :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

you mean too much work?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh No, trying to pronounce them! LOL

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I did a search on the first two and got some info, but came up with very little on the last one? I really do belong in a warmer climate! LOL

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I really like the dwarf one! :)

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

the sabal?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

yes, I thought that one was really cute looking.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

they are natives around here

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Still looking for ideas on some tropicals that would survive my zone! :o)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I will try to think of something this weekend. Do some reseach. :~)
