Ok, is this the beginning of a bloom? I know it isn't big but it looks different than any of the leaves. This is a monster white cutting that someone was so kind as to share with me.
I have never seen blooms so I am a little over anxious. Took my DH over to see and he has drawn up the papers to have me committed...LOL.
This is a great site and thank you to everyone , you all are so kind and helpful.
Joyce
Is this the beginning of a bloom???
Oh, I am so excited! This morning is the first time we have had sun in days and my monster white was wilted, hope I didn't let it dry out too much and lose them. I have at least two tiny blooms.
Joyce
Now comes the tough part of pacing back and forth day in and day out until that baby is born! Keep us posted.
I am guessing this bud will take sometime to become a bloom?
Joyce
I am curious on how many blooms I will end up with. The brug is only about 3 1/2 feet tall. I am so hooked on this plant and this is my first bloom.
It will take a while to get big... I honestly can't tell how long, cause it always seems twice as long as it really is. LOL I would guess a month at least at this time of year... but the only thing I can say with certaintanty is that it will feel like a year!
If your plant has a good amount of sun, you will get more blooms.. now it's time to go bud hunting!
Congratulations!
Drawn up the papers. Ha ha ha
:*) ain't brugs fun!!!
Kim
Thanks ZZ, a month, gosh I was thinking maybe a couple of weeks. I am going to have a long wait. I am terrified something will happen to them. I have found at least 2. I am afraid to dig to hard I might break something. LOL.
I was looking in a garden catalog and there was a plant that if you started from seed you would get your first bloom in 7 years, no need for me to try that I would forget what it was by then!
Congratulations Joyce I am so excited for you! I've yet to experience a bloom myself so I will be watching, waiting, and pacing the floor with you!
Congrats on the blessed event!!!

happgarden-
I also rec'd some of the Monster White brug cuttings late in the summer. The (green) cuttings were less than 6" long when I got them. They didn't grow real fast but one of them finally Y'd and when I brought the plant in to overwinter it had 5 tiny little bloom buds forming. I was afraid that I would lose the buds but they perservered and bloomed in the basement. The thing that flabbergasted me was that my MW was only between 12"-18" "tall" and when the flowers bloomed they were almost as big/long as the plant!!! And, for such a little plant, the blooms were quite fragrant (impressed my DH...). It'll be a couple of weeks but hang in there!!! Congratulations and enjoy!!!!!!
Jan
In the spring or summer.. or when the weather is warmer, they will open up much faster! Cold slows everything down to a crawl.. hang in there, winter blooms are a real treat... even though they may not be as amazing or as fast as spring blooms!
Wow they look really cute :)
Too funny Joyce! (who's counting) You thought a month was a L O N G time!!! You still have a couple of weeks to go! I was way off! She is getting closer now..
That is a nice bunch of buds! What super healthy leaves you have! Wow.. that is gonna smell amazing! I can barely wait.. Bloom pics Bloom Pics!
Joyce, I would never had believed it would take this long. The buds still don't look very big compared to ones I have seen on the dg.
it is in my house and I can't wait to smell it. I have more buds on other stalks. Only thing that concerns me is my dh has allergies........ and he might have to go.....and after all these years. LOL
I have 3 plants and now they all have little buds this one is bigger tho.
Everyone will be forced to see pics even my co-workers who none are gardeners.....

Joyce.. Being in the house is going to take longer, Just wait until they are outside & the warm spring rain & the breeze get to them & they will take off & grow fast. Does anyone have any dark yellow brug seeds, The yellow that I got from Kyle (Eclipse) I lost & he lost so many when the heat went out in the greenhouse.
Jerry.
Joyce! I missed this post... How exciting! I doubt they will bother DH, poor thing if it does! LOL It is SO exciting, whether your first one is inside or outside, they're never fast enough. I still get excited about them, after all these years. But the first one IS unforgettable! They do take longer inside. They will only smell at night, so be patient on that too...
Yippeee!! Looking great. I'm still pacing over here.
Hi AuntB, haven't heard from you in along time. Glad to hear from you. The brugs you gave me are big and tall but so far no buds. I do have branching so maybe.....this spring.
Guess I am amazed as bad as our winter has been that there has been enough sun to get anything to bloom.
Joyce
Glad they will only smell at night since I leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark. Otherwise DH would be the only one who would get to smell them.....LOL
Thanks everyone for listening to me chatter and actually care. I am just so excited.
Joyce
Question to you all who know, will this plant bloom again this summer? How often do they bloom and do the blooms last along time?
Thank you ZZ I am really excited. You have had some awful weather in CA. Gosh I thought Missouri was bad in the winter, but we just go from cold to miserable cold and back.
Joyce
Never had so many Joyces! LOL I am like WHAT? WHAT?? Did I say that? LOL
Guess it's best that everyone calls me ZZ and then I can tell what was directed at me! LOL That is too funny!
I'm sure it will bloom for you after these buds open.. I don't have that particular one so I can't say how it blooms.. but I'm sure there is more than one flush in your near future!
I was a bit confused with the Joyce's, too. lol Happ, since you can keep them actively growing in winter, you should have blooms off and on all summer. Some brugs produce more "flushes" than others but by keeping them growing in winter, the blooms come sooner in Spring/Summer... I've waited all summer for some that were starts the winter before, only to see buds, then have to bring them in for winter... for me, I'll fight the bugs all winter, to have blooms sooner once the weather warms.. (no sign of germination on my seeds, yet.. trying to be patient)
Speaking of bugs I just spotted bugs on my calla lilly.........darn so out with the soapy water....I have been really lucky up until now
One of the Joyces...LOL
I'm so glad the sun room is working for you.. And your TLC! I'm not going to work today (will work from home) we have had thunder, lightening, rain and sleet before 7 this morning... w/ snow following soon. I'm getting out the soapy water today and playing in my basement garden! SNOW DAY!! Hope the bugs are contained with the lily.. "One of the Joyces" LOL Did the buds grow last night?
What a fun thread. Learning, Learning, Learning........
One of the Joyce's...I brought my brugs into the garage in the fall. They bloomed better than they had all summer. My sweetie, that has allergies, couldn't even go out because of the fragrance. He was glad that all the blooms gradually dropped. I only have 2 buds at this time, 'in the house', he says when they bloom, they go or he goes. LOL. I wonder where he is going to vacation? LOL
We will keep waiting with you.
Marie
Unluckily the bugs, brugs, calla lilies, and tall hibiscus are all together in the sun room!!!!!! I am so afraid......
The buds grew at least .0002 inches since I checked ....LOL
How can you go without bugs from September when I brought everything in to February and then have bugs!
I am down with a monocle inspecting every square 100th of an inch looking for those darn things.
Well, I am sure hoping DH won't be bothered by the brugs when they bloom, we will see. I don't see how they could bother him considering all the nasty smelling junk he uses in the garage on the cars and stuff he builds.
These are never going to bloom...............
Yes, they will bloom, but I know it is so hard to wait. Sometimes, I think we bring in the good bug-eating bugs in fall and finally around this time they start dieing off... (but that's just my theory). Mine did great for a couple months, but as I clean up down there, I find dead lady bug carcasses, as I used some systemic to avoid the nasty bugs... like I shot myself in the foot, lol. Snowed all night and still snowing..... I want Spring, NOW!
We had atleast 6 inches of snow. Just thankful we didn't have tornado's.
I should of never put the hibiscus out with the brugs. I always have problems with the hibiscus and bugs.
Looks like I have buds on the other white......yeah, it will be a nice thing to have while I wait for winter to end.
Pink Beauty that you gave me at the RU is as tall as I am but no y's yet. Versi looks really good but has put out side shoots down on the trunk and not nearly as tall. I am guess I should of taken them off when they were little. I thought I read on the site not to cut those off now until spring.
Joyce
I'm not sure it matters when you cut... the versi is good about sending up "trunks" from the roots. I let 2 or 3 grow for cuttings to share... but if it's coming off the main trunk, I'd probably wait until spring and then try to root the trimming... Pink Beauty grows really tall, 12-15ft from ground to top and when I've kept her dormant in winter is the last to bloom for me in Sept/Oct., but it is a strong one with beautiful large pink blooms.
Well, Pink Beauty has a way to go then, because it's just about a little over 5 1/2 feet tall. Think I will need another bigger bucket.
It will be fun to share with people when I can get enough spares.
You have done wonderful, 5 1/2 ft! It is fun to share and fun when you get to hear and see how the are doing. It brings me so much joy to know you are having a great time with them. I use those big 25 gal tubs w/ corded handles.. you can spray paint them with Krylon Fusion paint, I sprayed a red one, white and it's lasted for years.... drill holes for drainage. I pot them up 3 or 4 times, up to a 3-5 gal, then into the tubs.. once in a while one of the handles will give out on you, but they are great for 2 people to lug around. (or for one to pull, push and reposition)
Hey Joyce! Did this slow poke bud ever open???
edited to add... I have one in the GH that I think has had buds for a year.. LOL (just kidding, but it has been so long I quit looking!)

Slow poke is still waiting to open. I thought the other day it one of the buds looked different but....still nothing. It has lots of large buds, medium buds, and still setting small buds......now one of the other monster whites (she had sent me 3) has started putting on buds.....buds buds every where and no blooms!
waiting.....waiting.....WAITING....WAITING......
Like birthing a baby, Joyce. Pretty soon (we all hope lol) they will start pushing, pushing out the greenish color bloom, still tightly wound around itself.... then we will be bugging you everyday.... Lucky you, someday it will be blooms blooms, everywhere! Your whole house will smell so sweet in the evenings! Awwwwwwwww brug heaven!
Very pretty pic AuntB...I can just see a little tendril. :)
