10 favorite burgmansias

Cave Creek, AZ

What are you 10 favs of brugs? I've only been growing a short time and am not sure what brugs I should be picking out. I live in Arizona and have very hot summers. I don't think that my 2 brugs liked summer but they recovered this fall. They are wintering in the Arizona Room were it is around 50 but gets a little cooler at night.

Natine Habitat Double Peach

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

10?? OMG. That's a hard one. You gotta realize that they perform differently in each zone and all that good stuff.

Ok, I'll try....

1. Whiskers -- awesome scent, stands up to 100+ degree weather with little wilting; gotta love those leaves too!
2. Mountain Magic -- Prolific bloomer, withstands heat, drought, no spidermites -- probably my favorite.
3. Day Dreams -- Once she is established, has amazing flushes with very nicely formed blooms.
4. Adeline -- Takes forever for her to hold buds, but when she does, has very nice medium pink, large blooms.
5. Tiara -- Gorgeous white double that smells almost like Whiskers. Sets pods easily.
6. Isabella -- Could not go a season without seeing her 200+ bloom flush in the early fall.
7. Orange Custard -- not officially named or released yet, but gorgeous dark green leaves, blooms that won't quit, and practically bug free.
8. Miss Emily McKenzie -- Huge, gorgeous medium pink blooms that are practically non-stop during the growing season.
9. Snowbank -- Even though mine didn't bloom last year, the foliage is to die for.
10. Everlasting -- because of the nodding blooms and the ping spotted hawkmoths love it!
That was hard!!!

7.Sweetheart - beautiful petite white double. Nice shape and form. Loves to bloom.
8.Harlot - color, color, color. Harlot and her pod sister Vixen have the most amazing color. Heavily fragrant and frequent bloomer

10. Vixen - see Harlot traits

Not necessarily in that order.....this is based on overall performance in a hot south florida environment

I still have many that haven't had enough time to be fully established, so this may change in the next couple years.

1. Day Dreams - Lovely shape, color, dependable bloomer. Dependable is very important to me.
2. Mountain Magic. Great pink single. Blooms even in the heat.
3. Fascination - One of the first double pinks to catch my eye and start the obsession. First to make me say "wow".
4. Meadow Princess. Smaller double with rich color and kept her nice shape. Some small ones don't
5. Painted Lady. Pretty pink with copious amounts of blooms. Will bloom when others have given up for summer.
6. Vixen. What she lacks in tendrils she makes up for in color and is a free bloomer
7. Mountain Treasure. Dependable, pretty; made a nice bush/hedge for me.
8. Dorthea. Bloomed early. An elegant pink single
9. L'Amour - One of the oldies, but worth keeping. Bloomed many times.
10. Adeline. Took 2 years of waiting but the reward put her on this list.

Oh my - I just realized all but one are pink. I am obsessed!

Rothkirch, single pink aurea that smells wonderful and likes heat.
Maya, variegated with peachy blooms. I have no problems with her.

Rubirosa...an awesome bloomer with great fragrance.
Sheer Bliss, much like Rubirosa, blooms are a little bigger.
Jamie...great yellow bloom color over variegated leaves.
Painted Lady...awesome deep color and good bloomer.

Good morning Shirley. Is Maya the one alot of people have problems with? Someone sent me a cutting, but it didn't make it. Just started shriveling up and the first thing I knew it was hollow.

Maya is a little hard to root unless it is rooted in the summer...at least for me. I meant I had no problems with it in heat, cool, or with critters of any kind.

I think better when I have a visual aid such as a chart or table. So I hope you don't mind if I took all the information supplied and turned it into a table. I would like to share it if anyone is interested, but first I need to find out how to convert an Excel file into a GIF, JPEG or PNG. Anyone know how to do it?

I thought 10 would be a good starting point for some of us beginners. Thank you all for the great help!

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi Mickey I live in AZ too. I think I spoke with you once on the SW forum. My dh's grandfather built a house in Cave Creek at one time many years ago before it was considered a city, and it was passed down through our family. It had an AZ room too. Beautiful views of the mountains. When he was a kid, my husband used to be able to shoot his BB gun from the side patio and not hit any houses. His granny was onery and kept a golf club next to the patio door to whack the rattlesnakes with, who crawled up on her porch to warm themselves in the sun.
I am in Lake Havasu City now, but grew up in the Phx area. Your temps are probably comparable to Phx but but cools off more at night.
Couldn't really say which brugs like it here in the summer~they all hate it, as do most of my tropicals! It bounces around between 110-120 here on a regular basis.I think you are a little cooler than that- thank goodness!! .I actually had to take many brugs in and cut them back this summer, even though I had built a shade house with misters etc.
A consistant 110 (with the night temps staying 100+) degrees is about the limit for most brugs. They will quit blooming after that and some flat-out will die from the heat. I had two huge brug trees that I have had for 6+ yrs do that for no reason other than heat!.. We also get hot dry winds which the brugs hate. The winter, late fall and spring are great and they love it. If I was dumb enough to be staying here, I would stick to my plumeria and cactus LOL! Only 3 of many, did fairly well with those temperatures, and they were NOL, Charles Grimaldi, and a large seedling I am growing ~hybridized by paul phillips.

My mom and grandmother have brugs in Phx and Peoria (I enabled them of course :P) and they don't have as many problems as we do here, they are more sheltered from winds via Phx area being in a valley, but they still look pretty bad in the summer.
Mites can be a problem due to the hot dry climate-it is perfect for them.

Your best bet is to amend your soil and put them in beds with mulch and a drip irrigation. They will like a lot of fertilizer. Keep them away from block walls and large boulders etc. It will cook them in the summer, they will need shade in the afternoon in your climate. Some type of shelter from winds, if it is often windy.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9b)

MickeyAz, I have had good luck with Charles Grimaldi in Tucson. Right now it is blooming and also has lots of flowers about to open. It is in a large pot under a mesquite tree.
