Some warm cheery lilies for a cold winter day....

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

...compliments of Oregon Flowers cut flower greenhouses. The PNWLS visits these greenhouses every December (the owners are also members). After the tour everyone gets a bouquet of lilies still in bud. I've been waiting for these buds to open so I could post a picture! A few statistics about Oregon Flowers: $5 million of business per year, more than 5 million lily stems shipped per year plus 5 million other cut flower stems, 8 acres under glass. Imagine, growing lilies 24/7!

How long did it take for them to open?

drat, I knew I had seen it before and lusted after it. It didn't make the cut on the Wooden Shoe Lily Co-op that is being run now. I may have to just order some directly. Such a pure yellow. It is going in my want list. Thanks, Patti

Pirl, our visit was last Saturday, the 8th. As you can see the buds were fairly tight, with some just showing a bit of color. As soon as they are exposed to warmth, things start moving real fast, as you can see. About half the buds are open now.

A couple more industry details: After they are harvested, they are bundled and stored in a walk in refrigerator at about 34F. They go into refrigeration again at the airport until takeoff. In other words, everything possible is done to reduce the exposure to warm temperatures.

Martin Meskers, the owner, threatened to make all of us who have visited before take a test (this was my 3rd or 4th visit). As you can see, I do remember some details!

Aaahh....the Lilies! They bring back memories of warm summer days and the sweet drifting scents of secret blooms in the breeze!
Here are some oldies still coming back every year in the front flower bed.

Mmmmm.... Now I'm really looking forward to summer! Oh did I mention that Serrada is lightly fragrant? Unusual for an Asiatic.

I was guessing it would take about a week. Doubly nice that it has a scent. I put some Orientals and OT's in with my Asiatic field to add some scent.

Grannyh - it's nice to think of sweet summer breezes as we see the grass covered with snow.

Very nice bouquet to see on this (yet again) very snowy morning. Wish I could have been there. What a beautiful cheery yellow!

Those are just the ticket to help cheer up us snow babies. That bright yellow is as good as the sun, who is hiding behind snow laden clouds today. Thanks for sharing!
