Who knew????
What would you ask this Saint to do for your gardens?
Anyway, found this on a link from the mega-gardening link from another thread:
But one glory still rests on Saint Fiacre's brow. He remains the patron saint of gardeners, especially those who grow vegetables. The vegetables he grew around his monastery were said to be superb. Naturally enough, he has been claimed also by florists and by potters. His image stands solemnly in many a church in Paris, northern and western France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He always holds a spade at his side, and his effigy is frequently dressed in the coarse clothing and shoes of the peasants in his region. He often seems to be looking at the ground, where he will dig. He is the saint whose aid may be implored in clearing weeds and brush and stones from the garden, and if he does not help with the digging and the heavy lifting, he can at least grant patience and persistence in labor that is never done. He is a saint for lowly things and for increase, and his blessings are welcomed by those who love springtime and planting, summer, and harvest, the smell of turned earth, and the joy of a flowering land.
Patron Saint of Gardeners
Well, he is Definitely invited to stand watch over my garden! Especially if he helps with the weeding because no-one in this family of mine does...unless there is bribing or blackmailing involved!
He is watching over my greenhouse for me right now!
Looked him up. Also the saint of cab drivers, tile makers, box makers and florists. He is supposed to protect against hemorrhoids and venereal disease as well! What went on in the gardens and cabs back then??
Victor, oh great now my garden is now going to have some cabby's lulling about in hope of being relieved of their venereal diseases while visiting with a bunch of clay smeared tile-heads that are there hoping that they can con the gathering of hemorrhoid suffering box makers into cutting them a better deal for cartons than they are currently giving to the florist who are busy eyeing my stands of lilies with enough menace that I may need to call on a saint just to save my precious garden. Are these your pals? Patti
Good one, Patti!
Cute! I left out hosiers, pewterers and sterility. This guy could do it all!
is a hosier someone from indiana? or someone from canada (as in Bob and Doug Mackenzie - remember them?)
Sure do, eh?
take off, victor.
I'm protected by the Saint.
watch for the sign of the Saint.
LOL, eh?
I need him next spring when I'm working on the poison ivy patch!! (I'm SPRAYING, not pulling!!) Eleanor
I'll try making the stained glass window a bit more square. Then you can see the poor guy's face.
Ah!
That's a bit better.
Like the pic Candyce (I'm starting to think of ideas - maybe a cement stepping stone with a mosaic on it???) Eleanor
Oh!
That's a GREAT idea!!!!
Eleanor, that's cool. you must be talented (think we already knew that)
I guess you would be a happy camper either if you had to battle the things he had to! Gardening was the easy one.
Well, I am hoping Saint Fiacre will bless my gardens and send all slugs and Japanese beetles to the seventh ring of Hell. (Can you say Hell on DG?)
Not in the Prayer Forum.
I agree, Seandor. Slugs, earwigs, Japanese beetles and blackspot.
I'd also ask the good saint to keep Victor the way he is.
Good idea about the slugs, beetles etc. Can we also get this St to move the bunnies and deer along too? Or do we call in reinforcements. Victor must know the right guy to protect the garden from these evil doers. I don't want them to go to Hobbit land, but just back to the brush and woods. About 50% of the island is open and protected just for them, except during the hunting season when the conservation groups allow hunting. Patti
Amen! Eleanor
I'm with you! How in the world can the word 'deer' even sound like 'dear'?! It just ain't right.
Given the choice of any name, and bearing in mind the AUP, what would you select for a new name for them?
You really throw a roadblock with that darn AUP reminder!
What animals were evil / destructive in the Garden of Eden??
Adam.
Very good. But if memory serves, he wasn't the one who caused all the trouble.
You can't possibly think it was the fault of the much maligned Eve!
I'm with you Pirl!
Well I'm shocked Michaela! I guess it IS Adam's fault for requesting a woman.
Adam asked for Eve?
What I don't get is how SHE gets blamed for everything - let's see, she quests for knowledge - and she's punished???
Maybe ignorance really is bliss somewhere - but not where I am from.
Where are you from?
