I would like to arrange a trade or pay postage for a couple of nice cuttings of Aztec Gold. I just started growing Plumeria this past spring from cuttings that I received then. I only have two plumies; Slaughter Pink and Celadine. They are still small plants since that they have only been growing for less than a year.
I have several brugmansia that I could offer for trade. I also would like to have one of the "rainbow" type cultivars. There are so many that have the rainbow colring that it is hard to chose what cultivar that I really would like. Whatever rainbow colored plumeria that I would possibly get, I would like for it to have quite a bit of orange and to be very fragrant also.
PLEASE, post suggestions for a rainbow colored cultivar below. Any suggestions Clare?
With winter upon us there is no way to safely ship plants or cuttings until next spring. So if anyone is interested please drop me a D-mail. And we can work out the details for a spring trade or share.
I have learned a great deal about plumeria from the great people here on this forum, such as Clare and others.
Thanks in advance.
David
Would like to have Aztec Gold
wow, hetty you're bringing back some memories and fun times:-)
Hi David, you are so right that spring is the best time to trade after the cold weather has passed.
I agree with Hetty that Candy Stripe is an all-around winner with both beauty and fragrance and six-petalled blooms. Other rainbows that are wonderful to me are:
Kimo -- lots of orange in the center and smells delicious like Hedychium coronarium (Butterfly ginger). Kimo can be difficult to root so I would recommend getting a grafted one from Florida colors. This is a must-have in my book. The colors can vary and become darker with more intense heat. Here's a picture of mine below.
Teresa Wilder -- a reliable bloomer with gorgeous colors and a sweet but mild fragrance
Tahitian Sunset -- beautiful sherbert colors but only a slight sweet smell
Penang Peach -- lots of orange in the flower, a reliable bloomer, and a peach fragrance
Kauka Wilder -- beautiful rainbow with lots of red and a sweet fragrance
Grove Farm -- an amazing spicy fragrance of nutmeg and cloves, a big flower with beautiful colors
Mary Helen Eggenberger -- a fantastic elegant perfume with a beautiful flower
Typhoon -- this one is from Thailand and might be hard for you to find, but it has a beautiful orange center with a nice perfume.
Fruit Salad -- I have a fruit salad too from Australia, as Maydreams mentioned, and it is a beautiful orange, but mine has little to no fragrance. Fruit Salad is the name that is given to pretty much encompass a bunch of similar type of flowers in Australia so it may vary from seller to seller as to what you get with this cultivar.
those all sound so beautiful!! thanks for the pictures and descriptions --
Thanks to all of you who have given me some suggestions. Boy, the decision of what to go with is going to be really hard.
Clare, Kimo looks wonderful. Propably will end up with one of them. LOL!!!
Other than Aztec Gold and Kimo, I am leaning towards Grove Farm or Typhoon. Fragrance is very important to me when I decide what flowers to grow.
Again, thanks to all of you. It is going to be awful hard to keep the numner of plumeria in my collection under control. I started growing brugmansia about 10 - 11 years ago and have been hybridizing them for about 5 - 6 years now. It was very easy to build my collection up to almost 300 plants. I won't do that again, I have to overwinter all the tropical plants in an upstairs bedroom. That is just too much work for my bones.
LOL, David. I know what you mean. It is very easy to build up a huge collection. Fragrance is very important to me also. These are my top ten fragrances right now:
1. Singapore
2. Celadine
3. Vera Cruz Lutica
4. Barry's Orange Pink (from Singapore -- very similar to Kauka Wilder but stronger)
5. Kimo
6. Angus Selection #3
7. Grove Farm
8. Vera Cruz Rose
9. Mary Helen Eggenberger
10. Dwarf Singapore White
Since fragrance is important to you too, I think you will find that the whites and yellows tend to have the strongest fragrances while the reds and rainbows have the mildest fragrances. That is a generalization, of course, to which there are exceptions. For example, 'Hurricane' is a lovely red that smells like cherry candy to me and should probably be in my Top 10, but my Top 10 changes depending upon what is blooming at the time.
Since you will be overwintering in an upstairs bedroom, I would definitely add Dwarf Singapore White to your list. Mine is tiny, and I don't think it even grew more than an inch the first couple of years that I had it, but it is blooming right now, and it smells wonderful.
Good luck! These can be very addicting as brugs are. Dwarf Singapore White flower is below.
That's a lovely one, Hetty.
I like everyone's list here, but i like to add some more
because 10 is not enough to make a list IMHO.My additions
contain some local plumies which i find have some of the most
potent smells compared to alot of plumies out there..

Thee best smelling Thai plumie so far hands down!
A very strong perfume smell which you can smell from a couple of feet away.
This plumie actually smells like some women's perfume very strong too..
