Me too Michaela! There's a quince that is just spectacular on the drive to the train station. It's about 8' tall and upright, not gangly or sprawling... wonder if I can get a picture of it.
Way to go on the poetry folks!!!!! Ya had me laughing so much.
Anyone have experience with quince bushes.
Harper & Michaela:
Your mission, should you chose to accept it: find out the names of those quinces.
Don, That rhyme might be my favorite yet!
uh . . . orange? It is a hedge between two neighbours. Goodness knows how long the hedge may have existed . . . in any case, the original owners on either side (and several owner's since) are long gone. So who knows what type they are?
They are vivid though . . . :-)
I have a quince that "came with the property". Don't know the variety, but it's older and bright orange. Must be like the one Michaela's talking about. It's not very tall - only about 3 feet at most. I also cut the runner shoots, only keeping about a dozen. I stake these - if I don't I can't see the flowers in the Spring.
Originally, they were in mostly shade when we moved in. So I dug them up and put them in full sun. They transplanted just fine. That was about ten years ago, and I don't remember any deep roots. Someday I'd like to move them to where they can ramble on.
Dave, all I'm gonna promise is that I'll take a pic of it in the spring when it's blooming and then I'll try to ID it in the PlantFiles. This one's pink, as I remember.
Thanks Harper!
Dave, are quince the same as potentilla? Why or why not? x, Carrie
No, they are quite different. But why? It is the sound of one hand clapping.
Oh lord!
hallelujah.
i feel a george harrison song coming on...
(actually , i do generally put my sweet lord into my xmas mix. seems appropriate.)
And just cause it's a great song.
Hi Amy and Harper - Merry Christmas!
Same to you Michaela!
Hi everybody! Merry and Happy! man we were up so late... It's like Ray woke up one day last week and said dear God it's Christmas next week and I haven't got any presents yet! So he was we were out frantically shopping all night and that wrapping wrapping wrapping. Why bother? I was looking forward to an economically enforced leaner Christmas but "we can't disappoint the children". Well, the youngest child is nearly 14 and holding on for dear life. (Wearing eye makeup and pretending to still believe in Santa, for real.) Oy!
xx, Carrie
Carrie, that's a funny age. they want so badly to grow up and at the same time they cling to their safe 'baby' things.
I'm Sorry! I am 52 and I believe in Santa! And why not? Look what it gets me - and entire grow operation - shelves, lights, and heating pads (well, I am ording the heating pads today :-) Anyway, I have the makings of five shelf unit - four shelves with have florescent lights I can raise and lower (they are a mix of cool and warm tubes, which apparently is almost as good as very expensive grow-lights).
So now I can grow lots of flats of seedlings. If I get one of these setups each year for the next few years - why I will be able to grow as many as pirl!
I LOVE Christmas!
Bah humbug....
Yeah, Jan, but DD#1 wasn't so OBVIOUS about it! I mean, it actually required a little thought on the part of DH and myself. DD#2 is wearing eye makeup and footie pajamas, holding her stuffed animal and sitting us down for a long talk about what age boys is she allowed to date! (And meanwhile her "real father" is withholding financial information necessary to complete aid applications for secondary school. I mean she'll get IN, but how will we pay? Not by my articles!)
OH well. The day after. I try to clean up - I mean pick up, of course, not clean up like Michaela did!
BTW, Christmas Eve, my brother left the door unlocked while he took the dog around the block. When he got home the PRESENTS WERE ALL GONE! The computer was there, the stereo, all that stuff, but the PRESENTS had been stolen! Now I feel bad that I got him and his GF such a lame present. Oh well, he's pretty bogus anyway. But still... even bogus humbugs shouldn't have their Christmases stolen.
xxxx, Carrie
Michaela, congrats on your great gift! Keep searching for 'full spectrum lights', instead of grow lights. They will often be cheaper. They jack up the price for gardeners!
Thanks - when My Dave bought the lights he was told that the cheapest way to go was to buy some "warm" lights and some "cool" lights - creates the full spectrum at a cheaper cost. - Well, that's what he told me!
He is downstairs puttiing everything together for me!
carrie - that's AWFUL! it must've seemed like a bad dream.
what part of the world does he live in?
Michaela, congratulations on your seed set-up present! (I'm 52, too!) I'll be getting my present from dh in the Spring - one of those Vermont garden carts. Can't wait!
I got gardenning gift certificates to 2 of my favorite nurseries plus some make-up gardening classes from last year to get me through the winter!
You use make-up while gardening, Dave?? I wouldn't have guessed.
Since I started gardening I stopped wearing make up and nail polish. Dave, is that when you started?
Dave, do you mix your own make-up with quince juice?
And applied with a quincy atomizer???
Amy, he lives in an upscale (?) part of Boston. It's more sad than awful, really. Most of what was taken was apparently gift cards (I found out last night). They had bought Old Navy gift cards for DDs # 1 + 2 which had already been redeemed by the time they reported the theft to the police!
xxx, Carrie (can't afford gift cards because then people know how little you spent)
i'm right there with you on that, carrie!
i think y'all are missing the point about dave's classes - he is growing make-up. Y'know, vegetable gardening, flower gardening, and makeup gardening....
hey - growing makeup - what next? Spinach mask?
Well, I'm sure you all remember I got a garden for growing containers last Mother's Day! Maybe this year I'll get a makeup garden, too!
xxx, Carrie
Dave, are you staying away on purpose? Or are you trying to compose the best come-back makeup joke? Arise, and defend yourself!
It takes a while to get his foundation looking JUST right! xxx, Carrie
Poor Dave47.
I think you folks covered all the possibilties while I was away. Foundation plantings, lipstick plant... It's too little too late.
