Anyone have experience with quince bushes.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

There is a quince bush at my job. It is sprawling and never has that many blooms. Looking in catalogues, they look great. I'm wondering if they have improved and I should give them a try.
Anyone have feedback for me?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

They always look good in catalogs. I have yet to see one I would want.
We had one when I was a kid, eons ago. There is one near my home now. Don't bother, there are many much better bushes to choose from than Quinces.

Thanks Andy! Good to hear from you!

I was hoping they improved.

I have one that blooms, Dave. I'll try to get the name of it. Has a nice contorted shape too.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Victor! Mine blooms but not densely.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mine is certainly no show stopper, but it's nice and has a nice fragrance.

If it doesn't sprawl, I'm interested.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not at all.

Pruning, guys. and a bit of fertilizer. Quince is one of my hillside holders. The roots go to china. My neighbor has a huge one. I love it because you can force the blossoms in the spring. I dug an old one up from the side of my driveway in the shade and got three pieces out of it that are doing well. the last bit is still hanging in there because between my son and I we could not get it out. It was tied into the roots of the maple tree across the fence in my neighbor's yard.

Thanks Martha!

I just transplanted two quinces this fall.
Your'e right, they tend to an ungainly sprawl.
I think they do best espaliered to a wall.
We'll see next spring if they come back at all.

My cultivar is perfectly behaved. About 3 - 4 ft tall and about 2 -3 feet wide. I can't stand things that go all over the place. Not enough room. Not enough patience. Just like staking is a no-no in my garden. If it cannot take care of itself, it's not in my garden!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

the tough love school of gardening. of course it is perfectly behaved for you!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

More like small garden school of gardening!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i bet my garden's smaller than your garden...
:-P

I thought women were not into size?

(Zone 4a)

Depends on what we are talking about....

Victor, you are so wrong...

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Victor, Do you have the name of your quince?

Quick, before this thread becomes an AUP violation!!

Dave, I have several months of experience with quince LOL. I did a lot of reading before I bought 'Cameo'. Apricot color blooms, no thorns, 3-4' max and Michael Dirr grows it in his own garden! Mine is all of about 8" tall.

Victor, is this the one you have? I thought you might have mentioned it earlier on.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think mine is Chaenomeles speciosa 'Contorta'.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jan! I'll see if I can get it to make an appearance.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks Victor. Choices are good.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

some people have contorted filberts, victor has a contorted quince. (tho somehow it doesn't have the same ring.)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

One contorted quince equals five contorted filberts.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

You're the Prince of Quince!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't make me wince!

Care for a blintz?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

If it's wrapped in a chintz.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Haven't seen one since...

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

want some pie? it's mince.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

some people just can't take hints.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

No thanks, I'll have some mints.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Don't forget to rinse!

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Your previous posts convince
You've rung most rhymes from quince!

Vic: The chaenomeles contorta entry in plantfiles needs a picture!
I looked up my records--the quince I have is Jet Stream. Don't recommend it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Don. I'll see if I have one. If not, I'll get one this spring.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Don, As our resident poet, do mints and hints really rhyme with quince?

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

From mints and hints you must not shirk.
It's close enough for government work.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

hahahaha!

i think mints does rhyme, but hints is not quite a true rhyme. is that a "slant rhyme"? (tring to remember literary terminology...)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I admire the quince of my neighbours - is that enough experience?
